UK: In Wales swimming pools, gyms and leisure centres reopen; in Northern Ireland masks become mandatory in enclosed spaces such as shops.
Saudi Arabia: Saudi Aramco, the oil and gas giant, publishes its results for the second quarter.
On this day
In 1675 John Flamsteed, the first astronomer royal, laid the foundation stone of the first part of the Royal Observatory at Greenwich; in 1895 Sir Henry Wood’s first promenade concert was held at the Queen’s Hall, Langham Place, London. The Proms were first held at the Royal Albert Hall in 1941, after the original venue was gutted during a Luftwaffe bombardment on May 10, 1941; in 1988 US President Ronald Reagan signed the Civil Liberties Act, providing a presidential apology and symbolic payment of $20,000 to the surviving internees, evacuees and persons of Japanese ancestry who lost liberty or property because of discriminatory action during the Second World War; in 2014 Recep Tayyip Erdogan was voted in as Turkey’s first directly elected president.
Nature Notes
The pink or pink-and-white striped circus tops of field bindweed are a cheerful sight in high summer — although perhaps not for farmers or the stricter kind of gardener, for this fast-growing, persistent, twining wildflower is considered a serious weed in 14 countries, including most of mainland Europe. Although its pretty blooms can be all white, it is easily distinguishable from the snowy trumpets of hedge bindweed by its smaller flowers and lower-growing habit; both are members of the morning glory family (Convolvulaceae). Also known as creeping jenny, sheepbine, hedge bells and cornbind, field bindweed is a favourite with butterflies and is particularly common on waste ground and arable field margins.
