Thousands of Hungarians took part in protest for press freedom following the resignation of over 70 journalists of the country’s most popular news website Index.hu. The mass resignation happened after the publication’s editor-in-chief Szabolcs Dull was fired, a move that experts say is a push by the government to further censor media in the European country. Most of Hungary's independent outlets have been closed or purchased by government allies in the recent years.

The protests are becoming increasingly anti-Kremlin after President Vladimir Putin installed a new governor to the post who is not from the region.
