Surfin' Lungs "Cowabunga" 1985

Yet another early neo-surf group. You see kids, Bart Simpson didn't make up the term Cowabunga...
They mix the catchiest of surf vocal harmonies with a very powerful instrumentation typical of bands like The Ramones. Their instrumentals are brilliant and their live performances are astonishing!. I wasn't interested in surf music until I found these guys, and this is a great example to demonstrate that you don't have to be a Brian Wilson fan to enjoy the 'Lungs. They sing and play really well and they're great fellows. Get ready to surf over the Surfin' Lungs melodies!
Robin Wills, from the Barracudas, produced their second single on Lover's Leap, "Pray for Sun". Robin cheered the band to record more tunes and do a mini-album for a french label, but things screwed up and finally Big Beat Records made them an offer that was accepted.
The record became "Cowabunga!", released in 1985. "Cowabunga!" was a big success, and later came "Surf-Jet Girl", another EP where Roman Jugg (The Damned) contributed. (thanx the unknown reviewer!)

The Len Price 3 "Chinese Burn" 2005

"These are the facts: bare-bones guitar, bass and drums; classic British-freak-beat song hooks and vocal harmonies; fifteen songs that roll over you like a mono copy of The Who Sing My Generation, in just half an hour. And no one in the 3 is named Len. Or Price." --David Fricke, Rolling Stone
"...15 short, sweet songs and every one a Medway Punk gem....At times the 3 sound Merseybeat; like The Hives with Herman's Hermits style harmonies....and this is one of the most immediate albums you'll hear all year, each song instantly sounds like a classic." --Record Collector
The Len Price 3 are a dirty garage rock band hailing from the Medway Delta. Their sound is forged in the Medway tradition, fusing driving energy, catchy hooks and a raw 60's garage sound.
On disc and at live shows The Len Price 3 offer a truly memorable and invigorating sonic experience. This first album, now available on Wicked Cool Records, offers something for everyone - from the Devils of Chatham Town to childhood memories of fat wrestlers on Saturday afternoon TV. Comparisons will ultimately fall short of the mark, so do yourself a favour and give in to the sound of The Len Price 3... - amazon

Chris Bailey "54 Days at Sea" 1994

54 Days at Sea is another super-solid outing that plays to Chris Bailey's strengths: superior song-construction, a booming, blues-soaked voice tempered by 20 years of punk and post-punk rock 'n' roll singing, and fluid, flowery, yet to-the-point simple arrangements with help from eight other musicians (including unobtrusive touches of flute, clarinet, and piano that add flavoring)…
...Like Savage Entertainment, 54 Days starts OK, then catches a wind 1/3 of the way through and begins to dazzle. Few people can handle a nicer array of rock 'n' roll styles better, more maturely, and long before the deeply-upset couplet "Vampyres" and "Lazarus" turn this album around to the horror of the inner mind, a breezy set of tunes has already been belied by Bailey's ability to capture shaky ground in words. One wonders if the breakup of his marriage didn't inspire a lot of the torment that's more or less smothered in introspection here. In "Vampyres," he sings "The vampyres of my imagination have sucked my body dry...It's a shame that you and I/Are no longer eye to eye," and you know it hurts him more than he lets on, as "Lazarus" confirms: "And I know life is a fragile thing/Sometimes it's hard just to carry on/It's one of those times...like Lazarus, raise me from this mortal dust." One after another, such bitterly ironic, gulping choruses pile on another, and the effect is quietly pulverizing. By the time the two best tracks, "Nothing's as it Seems" and "In the Desert" cap off this powerfully quiescent LP of coming to grips with severe disappointment, Bailey has pulled the listener into his emotional-warfare sensibility completely, without the whiskey-soaked lamentations that highlighted his later Saints work. Another powerful work from Australia's greatest artist, living or dead. - AllMusic Review by Jack Rabid

Let's Active "Afoot" - EP - 1983

North Carolina’s Let’s Active was probably the most misunderstood of the South’s ’80s new-pop bands. Though dogged by a rosy-cheeked nicest-guys-of-wimp-pop image, they could be downright moody...
…Producer / multi-instrumentalist Mitch Easter assembled the trio in 1981, but it only emerged nationally in the wake of R.E.M., whose first two discs Easter co-produced at his Drive-In garage studio outside of Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Joining that band’s label, Let’s Active released a six-song EP, Afoot, bringing new meaning to such overused pop adjectives as crisp, bright and ringing. All the songs, even those with melancholy lyrics, are hook-filled, boppy and ultra-hummable. Pick to click: “Every Word Means No.”
But things were not as they seemed. Although perceived as the engineer of the now-sound-of-today in American guitar pop, Easter’s own tastes were running towards the electronic gadgetry of techno-rock. (His career as a producer was also taking off.) Also, his two original partners — bassist Faye Hunter and drummer Sara Romweber (sister of Flat Duo Jets’ Dexter Romweber) — were viewed as sidepeople, despite Easter’s egalitarian efforts to the contrary. In real life, the trio were not just simple, cheerful popsters. Both Easter’s love of “sounds” and the band’s inner conflicts were explored on Cypress, a record that is deeper and more enduring, though not as immediately winning, as Afoot. Denser, rambling textural pieces — some wistful, even angry — came to the fore. Few records sound so multi-dimensional, and Let’s Active has, for that reason, been tagged psychedelic — they make sounds you can almost touch. (In 1989, IRS combined Afoot and Cypress on a single CD.) - trouserpress - [Elizabeth Phillips / Ira Robbins]

The Barracudas "Drop Out With The Barracudas" US release 1994

say: "BAR - RA - CU - DA", man! Now put it all together! - I can't say: "BABARELLA-CUCUDADDA!" - but we have a hit record!
In 1981, The Barracudas burst into London's synth-obsessed pop scene with a simple, direct, punk-influenced yet rootsy kind of naive surf music, made their own by Jeremy Gluck's ironic vocals and Robin Wills' classic pop songwriting.
They enjoyed a Top 10 hit with "Summer Fun" then repaired to Rockfield to make this album, very much in the tradition of the Flamin' Groovies' "Shake Some Action" LP recorded there a few years previously. It has stood the test of time as one of the classic rock & roll documents, with such monster tunes as "I Can't Pretend", "I Wish It Could Be 1965 Again", "Saw My Death in a Dream Last Night", "Violent Times", and so many more.
The line-up:
Jeremy Gluck (vocals), Robin Wills (guitar & vocals), David Buckley (bass & vocals) and Nick Turner (drums)

The Masonics "Obermann Rides Again" 2017

Having attended the same secret lodge - the Omnipotent Order of Eccentric Rapscallions (OOER) - together for 25-odd years, our three heroes were united in their cause when they were elected to search the UK for a sacrificial virgin to be deflowered at the sacred Dodecacentenial Orgy (or 'DO' for short)...
…A 16-year search - during which Micky was mistakenly assumed to be missing, presumed unable to take the pace - yielded nothing. In short, they had no joy, neither on their home turf nor during a brief sojourn to western Europe. (Hence their anticipated presence in the Promised Land). To lure their prey they hit on the ingenious plan of disguising themselves as a musical 'rock-group' (presently very popular among young folk we are led to believe). Therefore, we urge all parents, siblings, friends, acquaintances and cohorts of any known (or not) unblemished no-tails, (irrespective of age, race, creed, cooking-ability etc.) to attend the soon to be announced Masonic gatherings, accompanied by same. Chris Bailey "Savage Entertainment" 1992 + "Do they come from you" 1993 - EP

"...an album which seriously ranks alongside the best of Seventies Dylan, and if it was the only record he'd ever made, would still have established Bailey amongst the greatest songwriters of the age." - Dave Thompson
"Eschewing the bloated production, he keeps it simple — just voice and guitar, with other instruments as color, not competition. With the exception of the heavy, bluesed-out "Queen of the Hour," Bailey doesn't bellow much here, but is no less effective a vocalist. The standout is the single, "Do They Come From You": a circling piano underpinned by strings and Bailey's plaintive wail. Other tracks delve into bitter ironies, self-deprecation and inner torment." - Jack Rabid
trax:

"Do they come from you" 1993 - EP
While this looks like an ordinary single off the excellent return-to-form Savage Entertainment (Bailey's fourth solo LP to go with almost a dozen LPs leading the Saints), the song is richly remixed and greatly enhanced in dramatic fashion. The strings, already lush on the LP, all but take over the songs here, making Bailey's anguished, soul-searching bellow all the more remarkable (a word that has often fit this man's singing since "I'm Stranded"). A real tour de force, up there with his more emotional, strings-laden, huge-sounding showstoppers from the Saints' mid-'80s glory, like "Ghost Ships" and "Just Like Fire Would." Speaking of the latter, it's re-recorded here Ă  la the live unplugged version from the 1992 U.S. support tour with Concrete Blonde, as something of an acoustic folky/bluesy song -- slower, more wistful, and more sorrowful where the All Fools Day original was boisterous and confident. Without the drums, Bailey replaces them with glistening, ringing acoustics that sound like (maybe) a harpsichord, and everything turns wonderfully melancholic. More great work! The remaining three selections continue in this mood even more, turning a page back to his first two solo LPs, the demos LP Casablanca and especially What We Did on Our Holidays. They're all just a lightly strummed/picked acoustic complemented by a wild, evil harmonica. "Mystery Train" is closer to the spirit of Junior Parker's original than Elvis Presley's more famous (hot) early Sun session single. The same elements feed John Phillips' folk storytelling "Me and My Uncle," like a bad Western about card playing, boozing, deception, and ultimately a murder of greed. You can all but hear tumbleweeds go by. The Southern blues of Jimmy Reed's "Bright Lights, Big City" ends this special EP in equally subdued style, showcasing the big-throated Saint's way with material and the mesmerizing way his big, round voice grasps a tune. Unlike 1989-1991, this is more of his finest efforts, in a new/old angle. - AllMusic Review by Jack Rabid

"Out Of Many" One Music! Songs That Shaped Jamaica (It's Later Than You Think) 1958-1962 - CD 3

Jamaica's national motto, 'Out Of Many One People', could well be applied to the music that shaped the island's national sound, with modern reggae the result of many different musical forms coalescing to form a wonderfully unique 'one'…
..Fantastic Voyage's highly popular Sound System Classics series has already celebrated the American jump blues favoured at Jamaican dances in the pre-ska era, but contrary to widespread belief, US rhythm & blues and the indigenous style of mento were not the only types of music enjoyed across the island prior to the development of Shuffle Blues and Ska. In fact, the diversity of sounds that exerted a direct influence on popular Jamaican music throughout the 20th Century is astonishing, taking in gospel, blues, jazz, vocal groups, country, pop, film music and exotica, hailing from Cuba, Puerto Rico, Southern Africa and the British Isles, as well as America. Now the full extent of these influences is demonstrated by this 81-track 3CD set Out Of Many, One Music! which features original or key versions of songs that have played a significant role in shaping the development of Jamaican music. But of course the small West Indian island has not just taken from others musically. Its pioneering use of talk-over DJs and stripped down version rhythm tracks has been key to the development of the now globally dominant music form, hip hop. Over the years, the Jamaican music-loving public has demonstrated a keen ear for sweet and sentimental music and that factor is far more important than the musical genus to which any given recording belongs. What becomes apparent from the music featured on this set is the Jamaican talent for reinvention. Rather than simply attempt to copy foreign recordings, as 'do over man songs', performers and musicians have taken elements of the original and reshaped them into something entirely different. And to prove this point, as you experience this extremely diverse and satisfying musical journey, consider the Jamaican versions that resulted from these recordings. There is no doubting of course that they provided the original source of inspiration, but the Ska, Rock Steady and Reggae that followed were far from simple, straight-forward covers, as we are sure you will agree.

Ennio Morricone (R.I.P. 10 November 1928 – 6 July 2020) "Once Upon A Time In The West" 1969

The soundtrack features leitmotifs that relate to each of the main characters of the movie (each with their own theme music), as well as to the spirit of the American West. The theme music for the Claudia Cardinale character has wordless vocals by Italian singer Edda Dell'Orso. It was Leone's desire to have the music available and played during filming. Leone had Morricone composed the score before shooting started and would play the music in the background for the actors on set. In 2018, for the 50th anniversary of the film, the Italian records company "Beat Records" released a limited 500 copies edition.
Ennio Morricone, (10 November 1928 – 6 July 2020) was an Italian composer, orchestrator, conductor, and former trumpet player, writing in a wide range of musical styles. Morricone composed over 400 scores for cinema and television, as well as over 100 classical works. He started as a talented football player for A.S. Roma but quickly left the sport to follow his passion for music. His score to The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966) is considered one of the most influential soundtracks in history and was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. His filmography includes over 70 award-winning films, including all Sergio Leone films (since A Fistful of Dollars), all Giuseppe Tornatore films (since Cinema Paradiso), The Battle of Algiers, Dario Argento's Animal Trilogy, 1900, Exorcist II, Days of Heaven, several major films in French cinema, in particular the comedy trilogy La Cage aux Folles I, II, III and Le Professionnel, as well as The Thing, The Mission, The Untouchables, Mission to Mars, Bugsy, Disclosure, In the Line of Fire, Bulworth, Ripley's Game and The Hateful Eight. - wiki

..Fantastic Voyage's highly popular Sound System Classics series has already celebrated the American jump blues favoured at Jamaican dances in the pre-ska era, but contrary to widespread belief, US rhythm & blues and the indigenous style of mento were not the only types of music enjoyed across the island prior to the development of Shuffle Blues and Ska.

Django Reinhardt "The Chronological Classics 1951-1953" - 2007

The 17th and final installment in the Classics Django Reinhardt chronology contains the Gypsy guitarist's very last recordings…
...Its 22 tracks consist of Decca and Blue Star records cut in Paris between May 11, 1951, and April 8, 1953. By this time, Reinhardt had switched entirely to the electrically amplified guitar and was actively collaborating with progressive young players like alto saxophonist Hubert Fol, bassist Pierre Michelot, and pianists Raymond Fol and Martial Solal. This beautifully cool and bop-inspired music differs markedly from the Gypsy swing formula established during the 1930s by Reinhardt, Stéphane Grappelli, and the Quintet of the Hot Club of France. During the last years of his life, Reinhardt was not merely adapting to modernity -- he was actively defining it. Nowhere is this more evident than on the eccentrically reconfigured 1928 pop hit "Crazy Rhythm" and its flip side, Reinhardt's lovely "Anouman," a wistful air that feels like a Charles Mingus romance or a candidate for an early Truffaut or Godard film soundtrack. (The piece's title closely resembles the name of the monkey-faced Hindu deity Hanuman; it very well may represent one of the many links between European Gypsy culture and its East Indian ancestry.) This excellent compilation works as a moving and thought-provoking conclusion to the complete recordings of Django Reinhardt as compiled and reissued by the Classics label. (The only material that didn't make it into the series was an apparently contested body of works recorded in Rome during 1949 and 1950.) A little more than one month after recording "Le Soir," "Chez Moi," "I Cover the Waterfront," and "Deccaphonie," Django Reinhardt was felled by a stroke while fishing, was subsequently hospitalized, and left his body behind on May 16, 1953. Musically speaking, this album is his last will and testament. - AllMusic Review by arwulf

The Masonics "In Your Night of Dreams And Other Foreboding Pleasures" 2011

Something of a garage-rock'n'roll supergroup, The Masonics are a winning combination -- featuring musicians who have done time in such legendary groups as the Milkshakes, Pop Rivets, Wildebeests, Kaisers, Headcoats, Del Monas, and more (not bad, seeing as there's only three of 'em -- namely, Mickey Hampshire, Bruce Brand and John Gibbs.) Masters of the Medway beat made famous by Mr Billy Childish, this is the group that should be the more famous one -- with their better songs and better musicianship. - amazon
Singer / guitarist Micky Hampshire possesses a merciless instinct for touching, simple, timeless rock’n’roll melodies and lyrics. The band performs with verve and precision, on record and on stage, always giving their followers their money’s worth. Bruce Brand pounds the traps like it could very well save your life. John Gibbs twangs the bass strings with a gut instinct, taking you into a groove with grit and gumption. Eight albums down the line The Masonics remain more hard-hitting and vital than any group of teenage hopefuls on the scene, of that there’s no doubt.

Chris Bailey "Demons" 1991

Demons is the third solo release from the iconic Chris Bailey…
...Demons offers a different vibe from Bailey that he would repeat on his next two wonderful albums; Savage Entertainment and 54 Days At Sea. Sort of a new beginning. Chris Bailey basically brings you into his world of despair and disappointment with upbeat songs. Great music featuring accents of flute now and again, as well as other arrangements like great horns.Chris Bailey is in full command on this terrific album. Highlights from Demons are "Marquis Of Queensberry", "Return To Zero", "Edgar Allen Poe". "Marie Antoinette" and my favorite "That's The Way It Goes". Chris Bailey has certainly earned legendary acclaim for his leadership of iconic Australian punk band; The Saints, but his solo work is somewhat unknown. This is criminal, as Demons and his next two releases demonstrate. Without question some of the best music ever. - Mark Yokel

"The Rubble Collection" Vol. 6 [10 CD Box Set] 2007

This is: Psychedelic Rock, Acid Rock, Freakbeat, Garage Rock, Mod, Pop.
Originally appearing on LP from the Bam Caruso label in the 1980s, and then on CD on the Past & Present imprint in 2003, these first ten volumes (boxed) in the Rubble Collection were conceived and collected by Phil Smee. For fans of the Nuggets series, both the two American volumes and the British Nuggets, you won't find a lot of overlap. The Nuggets comps were and are for people who want what was at least the stuff of legend, if not readily available. The collection here digs deep and are, for the most part, flawless in what they present. This set, and its companion volumes 11-20 (a separate box), are very different creatures. For starters, they dig a lot deeper into the hopelessly obscure 45s and tapes of Brit psychedelia, freakbeat, Mod, and pop.
For every cut by Sharon Tandy & les Fleur de Lys, the Glass Menagerie, Pretty Things, and Flying Machine and the Clique, there is at least one to match from acts like Peter & the Blizzards, Skip Bifferty, Life 'N' Soul, and Factotums. You're getting the idea. This is for the listener who wants to dig down and get virtually everything. There are some things missing here (the second box picked up a lot of that slack), and like other series' that go down into the underbelly of the '60s, some of what's here is drek. But there are real gems, too -- ,check out the Sharon Tandy cuts like "Hold On," on disc nine, or the Velvett Fogg's "Lady Caroline," on disc ten, or Fairytale's "Lovely People" that kicks off volume six. Then there's the completely cracked and whacked, such as Dragonfly's "Celestial Empire," Orange Seaweed's "Pictures in the Sky," and Focus Three's "10,000 Years Behind My Mind." In addition to these ten handsome volumes in a single fold-in case, there is a 93-page booklet completely annotating tracks and offering discographies for artists who actually had them. In 2007, Fallout in the U.K. reissued this box again, in a limited numbered (on the bottom) limited license, limited edition of 1000 copies at a more reasonable price than the previous version. [Thom Jurek, AllMusic.  Score: 4/5 stars]

The Masonics "Royal And Ancient" 2007

Most recent, and arguably strongest album release from ex-Milkshakes, Headcoats etc. Medway Garage 3-piece.
Who are The Masonics? Are they the collective mothers of The Sonics? Well, no. They're a buncha Brits who dig all things garage and they've had loads of records out. So why should I buy this? Well, if you dig the sounds of '60s beat mixed with fuzztone garage, then you'll dig this. No question.
Now, the band members are various, but I ain't gonna tell you 'bout 'em because, well, you never bothered to find out who played drums in The Nazz did you? Well then. It's the music you're interested in so that's what I'll give yer.
Listen buddy, get on with it, I got all day... Okay, okay, read over for a review of the tracks, the sounds and my response...
This LP, Royal and Ancient, is a mix of surf attitude, a fondness for '60s Britbeat before everyone's hair started toward the collar and garage punk dumbness. Now, don't take dumbness as a diss... some of the greatest records ever made have been dumb or made by dummies. So what kinda dolt-jolt is this? You dig Leave My Kitten Alone? Gone wild to early Kinks rekkids? Well, you're gonna git down to this LP for sure.
Do Thee Headcoats, The Milkshakes, The Clique, The Delmonas, The Kaisers or The Wildebeests mean anything to you? Well, the members The Masonics all served time in at least one of those bands. If you loved 'em, then you could probably argue that The Masonics are a supergroup of the Brit rock'n'roll scene. Either way, these cats have cut some serious stone. LP opener, Don't Talk To Me is a frazzled rabble-rouser which ticks ALL the right boxes. At times, it sounds like it's about to fall down drunk... but between... man, it's tighter than Booker T & The MGs.
The band switch between sweaty beat club to torch-song... garage torch-song I should add... there's no Celine or Whitney influence here... unless, by some fluke they've all had childhood sweethearts by the same name. Either way, Chicken Bomb, Shig-Shag, Call Me Deceiver all do exactly what they say on the tin. I've been lucky enough to have been given the long-player on both CD and vinyl, and to be honest, the vinyl pressing is a lot tougher. Maybe it's just the format... but if you wanna get the most outta this cut, then The Masonics 12 incher needs to find a home between your sleeves. (Electric Roulette)

"Out Of Many, One Music!" Songs That Shaped Jamaica! (Down Deep In The Mists Of Time) 1910-1954 - CD 1

Buddy Holly "The Buddy I Knew" 2000 - Vol 1

This is an interesting set; again, a must for the serious collector. There is much overlap between this set and many other bootlegs; indeed, each disc states in large letters "Tex-Mex Music Company Presents The Buddy Holly Showcase".
This set is roughly the equivalent to Polygram's Hank Williams box of the late '90s, in terms of what it does with Buddy Holly's music, except that it is a bootleg and, thus, lacks certain packaging amenities. Since MCA Records has been dragging its feet for years getting its Complete Buddy Holly box onto CD, it was only a matter of time before some enterprising anonymous producer went ahead and did this set or one like it. The result is seven CDs, 216 tracks consisting of finished songs, outtakes, mix-downs, home acoustic demos, and related recordings, starting with songs that Holly cut on a wire recorder with Bob Montgomery at around age 12 in 1948, and ending with newscasts about the February 3, 1959, plane crash that killed him. It's nearly 500 minutes of material, which sounds impressive (and is) until one discovers that it's also a bit of a mess. The producers have tried to follow a kind of chronological order, near as one can tell, although even there a certain sloppiness intrudes because they've flipped the song lineup lists on the first and second CDs; they've also included no annotation whatsoever, leaving it up to the listener to figure out the recording dates, chronological relationships of adjacent songs, and the general significance and origins of each track. Annotation would have helped, but it's not essential to enjoying the set or the music. The hits are all interspersed with the outtakes; it's hard to tell which version of, say, "Bo Diddley" is which among the half-dozen scattered throughout. Additionally, it's difficult to imagine that any but the most serious fans will want to plunge too far into the multiple overdubbing that some of these songs were subjected to, though Holly devotees, rockabilly fans, and rock & roll enthusiasts may love it. The sound quality is variable, in keeping with the sheer diversity of sources involved, but is generally acceptable or better, especially if one allows for the fact that a big chunk of this set is made up of tapes that were never intended to be heard by the public. The very personal essay by Holly's brother Larry Holley is extensive and informative, though not really about the music so much as about Holly's pursuit of a career and his private and spiritual life. - AllMusic Review by Bruce Eder
