What are the benefits of entering and how will my business be promoted?

The Lord Mayor's Commendations recognise your contribution to the rich fabric of our city. By entering you will receive acknowledgement of the dedication, hard work and business acumen that is required for a business to continue for many years or across generations.

Lord Mayor's Commendations recipients are promoted by us in print and online media, and during a photographic exhibition.

Recipients biographies and photos will also be used by us for archival and posterity purposes.

My business is 100 years old – why did I only receive a Bronze Commendation?

The Lord Mayor’s Commendations recognise the longevity of an individual proprietor within a business rather than the business itself. In the case of the Generational Family Business Commendation businesses that have been operated by the same family within the City of Melbourne for three or more generations in succession are recognised.

My business has more than 20 employees. Why can’t I enter?

The Lord Mayor's Commendations is a program celebrating the longevity of small businesses within the City of Melbourne and the benefit these businesses bring to our community.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics defines a small business as one that employs fewer than 20 people.

If you operate a business with more than 20 employees you may be eligible for a Generational Family Business Commendation for family businesses of any size that have been operated by the same family within the City of Melbourne for three or more generations in succession.

                    Is this a competition?

No. The Lord Mayor’s Commendations is not a competition or a prize based program. All eligible businesses are recognised in one of five categories.
