Oli i Rembetes • Rebetiko
Rembétika began as the music of the Greek urban dispossessed – criminals, refugees, drug-users, defiers of social norms. It had existed in some form in Greece and Constantinople since at least the turn of the century, but it is as difficult to define or get to the origins of as jazz or blues –genres with which (tenuous) comparisons are often made, not so much for the music as for its inspirations, themes and tone. Rembétika songs tell of illicit/frustrated love, drug addiction, police oppression, death and their delivery tends to be resignation to the singer's lot, coupled with defiance of authority.

Le
rebétiko (ρεμπέτικο), rembetika ou rebétiko tragoúdi (ρεμπέτικο
τραγούδι) est une forme de musique populaire grecque apparue dans les
années 1920 à la suite des vagues migratoires de populations grecques,
juives et arméniennes expulsées d'Asie mineure.
Le
développement du rebetiko autour du Pirée, alors banlieue pauvre
d'Athènes, fut le fruit de la rencontre entre ces réfugiés de la guerre
Greco-Turque et les Grecs, îliens ou continentaux, ayant fui leurs villages dans la même quête d'une vie meilleure.

Bien avant la "World Music", les musiques dites "extra-européennes" ont éveillé toute une génération à de nouveaux sons. Sur des labels tel "Folkways Records" ou "Chant du monde" ces découvertes musicales étaient comme une invitation aux voyages. Quelques exemples ici dans Ubique Terrarum
avec Jazz, Exotica ou Experimental pour épicer le tout.
