Council’s commitment to CBD safety
Council’s ongoing commitment to the city is to provide safety and security for all people within the municipality. An important part of this is to be prepared for any emergency.
The Melbourne CBD Safety Plan acknowledges that it is paramount to be prepared for a wide range of possible ‘significant events’, from major natural disasters such as fire or flood, to a hijack or even terrorist event.
The plan establishes a framework for a coordinated response for the safety of people within the CBD. It was developed in partnership with Victoria’s emergency management agencies, support agencies and all stakeholders.
Authority to plan
The plan has been prepared under the authority of the City of Melbourne Municipal Emergency Management Plan (MEMP) and Section Six of the Emergency Management Manual Victoria (EMMV). The plan will form part of the City of Melbourne MEMP within the Victorian Emergency Management Arrangements and will be audited in compliance with these arrangements.
Council’s aim is that Melbourne will be recognised for the way it plans for and manages emergency situations. This Plan will help us to achieve this goal.
Safety: a joint effort
The Melbourne CBD Safety Plan is a joint initiative between the City of Melbourne, Victoria Police, Department of Human Services and the Office of the Emergency Services Commissioner.
The Plan acknowledges that it is paramount to be prepared for a wide range of possible significant events from major natural disasters such as fire or flood to events such as acts of terrorism.
Be prepared
Be prepared for what you might have to do in an emergency. Take some time to read the CBD Safety Plan, and also be familiar with your building’s emergency plan. Working together, we can be prepared for any emergency. Let’s all help Melbourne remain one of the world’s safest and most liveable cities!
