                    Triennial arts grants program

Three young girls with colourful headscarfs and painted faces.
Our triennial arts grants program provides three-yearly funding for arts organisations and festivals which enhance Melbourne's cultural identity and reflect our goals and priorities. We are proud to support major and emerging arts organisations that make Melbourne a creative city.

The program supports a diverse mix of arts and cultural organisations, art forms, and contemporary and heritage practices.

The purpose of the program’s funding is to:

                    • support innovation and experimentation in content, practice and engagement
                    • enhance the Melbourne brand with a focus on excellence
                    • support participation in and access to the arts and creative expression, including specific target groups such as children and families
                    • increase city activation through delivering programming that increases city activity and attracts people into the city throughout the week day and night.

The triennial arts grants program is not an organisational funding program. The program provides three years of funding to arts organisations to support the delivery of programming that reflects the above purposes and furthers our objectives and priorities for Melbourne.

A new funding round for 2021-23 will open in early 2020. Please check closer to the time for details.

Social media, marketing and promotional tools

We deliver a range of marketing and communication activities throughout the year, with many aimed at supporting our city’s arts and culture programs and events. As an arts grant recipient, a range of promotional opportunities are available to you.

                    • What’s On website listing: Our What's On website receives around 12,000 visitors every day so this offers an easy way for a wide audience to discover your project. Listings are free, and are a requirement for arts grant recipients.
Listings should be submitted as soon as all your project details are confirmed, or at least three weeks before the project commences.
                    • Social media hub: Our social media hub features pictures and posts of things happening in Melbourne.
                    • What’s On newsletter and blog: The weekly newsletter highlights the new businesses in Melbourne as well as exciting upcoming events, and we have a blog which features regular content on what’s happening in our city.
                    • Social media channels: We have several different social media platforms. Once you have a What’s On listing, if you send us the link, an image and some information we may be able to promote your project or event on one of these platforms.

Additional opportunities for triennial arts grants recipients include:

                    • What’s On homepage feature: a rotating carousel on the What's On homepage prominently displays up to three items. To use this opportunity you will need to provide several large landscape images as layered InDesign files.
                    • What’s On homepage video: The What's On website also features a video. We are specifically looking for content that's clearly linked to the event which provides some insight to the production and is not overtly commercial in nature. The video needs to be posted to YouTube; min 640p, images: min 640 x 480 px and around 90 seconds long.

                    Please note:

                    • We may not be able to accommodate all requests to promote events. As an arts grant recipient, we encourage you to investigate a range of ways to promote your project and not rely solely on City of Melbourne to promote your event.
                    • We can't always guarantee there will be a spot available on the What’s on homepage for promoting triennial arts grant events, as this will be dependent on availability and the type of creative you send us. However, if accepted, the earlier we can get the material from you, the more likely your event will receive longer promotion.

For more information on our social media and promotional tools and how you can use them, see Social media and online marketing.

                    Environmentally sustainable practices

As part of the application, you are required to demonstrate the use of sustainable practices. We are asking all our partners and suppliers to get involved and reduce their own impact – for example by reducing waste, recycling goods and buying ‘green’ products when possible.

For some suggestions of environmentally-friendly practices for grant recipients, see:
