The iconic I NY logo was designed by Milton Glaser in 1976 in the back of a taxi and was dawn with red crayon on scrap paper. Glaser thought the campaign would only last a couple months, but it became our state slogan, provided us with a sense of unity and pride.

My dear dear friend Milton Glaser died today at 91. Today was also his birthday. Milton, you changed my life profoundly and I will be eternally grateful. I Milton, forever.

Milton Glaser sustained and amplified the vibrant life of magazines, especially general-interest ones, by at least a half century with his cover eye and overall graphic design brilliance. I benefited indirectly as a longtime reporter/writer for Newsweek back in the glory days.https://twitter.com/NYMag/status/1276710415741968387 …

Had some Milton Glaser built-environment photos saved on my camera roll, as one does, so on this double-whammy of a day: IMGpic.twitter.com/gQdfayvoSX
So saddened to hear of Milton Glaser’s passing. Besides designing the iconic INY logo, he was the co-founder of New York magazine & created some of the most famous graphic designs beloved today. His creativity and innovation will never be forgotten.

Milton Glaser designed the @SesamePlace logo. The park was designed by Eric McMillian, but Glaser designed the “look” of the park. Every detail (including handrails, fencing and staircases) were designed by Glaser with his signature flair. #RIP #MiltonGlaserpic.twitter.com/nNIkJYRVpe

No doubt that people will be posting a lot of Milton Glaser’s incredible, iconic work in the next few days; this is the one I think of often these days. What a legend.pic.twitter.com/9XnVun2nOe
I’m so sorry to read that Milton Glaser has died. Missing from this obituary is that he was extraordinarily kind, and deeply sincere. I’ll always remember him for these things most.https://www.nytimes.com/2020/06/26/obituaries/milton-glaser-dead.html …
I had the pleasure of meeting him at a dinner, when by chance we were seated together. He was such good company, in a room full of luminaries who would doubtless have better repaid his attention. So kind & genuine, that I kept forgetting OMG this is Milton Effin’ Glaser.

"If they’re lucky, designers get to lob an icon out into the larger culture — Leo Fender’s Stratocaster, say, or Shepard Fairey’s Obama poster. If they’re great, maybe they create two. Milton Glaser, operated on another plane — he kept hitting the bull’s-eye, again and again"
