In the last few days, there has been a dangerous escalation in Washington’s threats and provocations against Venezuela. The US Department of Justice indicted president Maduro and other Venezuelan officials on trumped up charges of narco trafficking, among other things. This was backed up by the US Department of State offering rewards of up to 15 million USD for “information leading to the arrest” of those indicted. Immediately, US president Trump announced it was sending warships to the Caribbean, off the coast of Venezuela, with the aim of fighting “drug smuggling”.

Venezuelan opposition figure Juan Guaidó led a US-backed coup attempt in Venezuela in 2019 after declaring himself "interim president" of the country. Guaidó also backed US sanctions on his country which the Center for Economic and Policy Research blamed for killing 40,000 Venezuelans between 2017 and 2018.

On 5 August, US President Donald Trump signed an Executive Order imposing a new and even more brutal set of sanctions on Venezuela, as part of its campaign to remove the democratically elected government of President Maduro.

On 6 August, hundreds of peasants and their supporters marched in Caracas on the first anniversary of the Marcha Campesina Admirable (the Admirable Peasant March). They were demanding the fulfilment of the agreements they reached with the government at the time, an end to contract killings of land reform activists and in defence of Chavez’s land redistribution programme.

Juan Guaido and a small group of mutinous troops posted a live video on Twitter this morning to call on "the military and people" to overthrow the legitimate president Nicolás Maduro. In response, the government is calling on supporters to assemble at the presidential palace.
