I've been a bit dead lately.  Better now, if you ignore all the blown-up computers here at PixyLabs.

Working on an update to the forum system today, so with a bit of luck* we'll have something up and running again soon.

Yay Rebecca!

Just a little bit of non-script-kiddy-related news: Rebecca Watson of skepchick.org is one of three winners of an NPR talent quest looking for new radio hosts.  She'll now be preparing a pilot episode for a skeptically-oriented radio show.

Got Eight Little Fingers But Only Two Thumbs...

Just wrapped up the 1.1.1 update for Minx, which I'll be installing tomorrow morning.  Now I'm concentrating on two things: Migrating mu.nu to Minx, and forum features, including private areas.  And documentation.  Three things: Migration, forums, documentation, and improving dynamic style support...

Oh, and server-side cookies.

And improved cross-browser support.

And getting a new computer, because this one's stuffed.  (Hits iTunes with a rock.)  Still stuffed.  Think it needs a prophylactic reboot.

Best Viewed In Anything But IE

I love having the mu.nu domain; it's simple and short and enigmatic all at once.  It does come with a price, though: Internet Explorer will not accept cookies from mu.nu.

It works fine with any of the many mu.nu subdomains, just not with mu.nu itself.  The reason for this is that, technically, mu.nu isn't a valid hostname.  The second level of a host name under a country-code top-level domain has to have at least three letters, and "mu" notably does not.  So IE looks at my cookies as some nasty attempt at XSS* or something and silently eats them.

Which means that if you're using IE, you can't log in.

Solutions:

  1. Use Firefox.  It's free, it's easy to download and install, and it's a better browser in every way.
  2. Use Opera or Safari.  These are both excellent browsers, but unfortunately neither one fully supports the editor used in Minx.  I have found an alternative editor that is supported on all four of the major browsers, and I'll be porting it to Minx soon, but for the moment Firefox is a better choice.
  3. I'll be setting up munu.net as an alternate domain for mu.nu.  Any mu.nu subdomain hosted on Minx will also work if accessed under munu.net.
  4. Hack your registry.  The last and least of your choices, but if you're (a) technically inclined, (b) have access to the registry editor on your PC (so you're not on a locked-down office system) and yet (c) are still using IE, this will work for you.  The registry change needed is described here and is typically bizarre; you need to edit a specific entry and add the relevent top-level domain backwards.  Yes, instead of ".nu", you need to add "un.".  (Unless you haven't run Windows Update in a looong time, though, you won't need the hotfix mentioned on that page.)

Fresh Start

Looks like reliable old phpBB got exploited again.  Whether it's the base code or one of the plugins, the end result is the same, and it's past time to drop the whole thing.

So here's our new front page, running on Minx.  This is where the action is!

You can sign up here for a free mee.nu account.  I'll be enabling forums both here and at mee.nu in the next few days.  I will be cleaning up the old database and importing the results somehow, but that may take a bit longer.

So, welcome to the new mu.nu.

Shame I didn't do it sooner...
