The Ashmolean is the University of Oxford’s museum of art and archaeology, founded in 1683. Our world famous collections range from Egyptian mummies to contemporary art, telling human stories across cultures and across time.
June is Pride month, and we’re celebrating (virtually)! This flag is made with a selection of works from our collection in celebration of LGBTQ+ life in Oxfordshire and around the world.
Pride month serves to advocate for LGBTQ+ rights, and celebrates and highlight the history and achievements of LGBTQ+ communities worldwide. It falls in June to commemorate the Stonewall riots, which occurred in the United States in 1969.

The Ashmolean is sad to announce the death of Dr Jon Whiteley.
Jon joined the Museum in 1978 as Assistant Keeper in the Department of Western Art. In a career of 36 years at the Ashmolean he was a dedicated teacher to generations of Oxford students; one of the country’s most distinguished art historians; and a well-loved colleague and friend to everyone who knew and worked with him.
