I have a lasting memory of walking with my father, a man, Pat Grant, was cutting hay with a scythe and he left an island of grass in the field. Daddy told me it was for the Corncrake’s nest. I returned and lying on the ground watched the chicks running in and out of the island.

The only place to see them now is Rathlin. We were a lucky generation that spanned the changing times and learned from people in touch with life and land.
