I wrote ~3K words about music's new avatar economy (including companies like Brud, Genies, Jadu, Strangeloop, Wave and Fortnite), why so many musicians want to build their digital doubles and how much it costs to make it happen. FULL PIECE HERE >>

Have any of you recently turned down an opportunity to perform in a livestreamed festival/showcase? If so, why? Tryna see something.

I'm not *entirely* joking when I say the real world will have to either compete or collaborate more with games like Fortnite and Animal Crossing to stay interesting to millions of people

Between the Verzuz battle and the Secret Sky festival, tonight is a night I've felt truly captivated, fulfilled and excited about music livestreaming culture, after a while of feeling like we we were reaching some kind of creative plateau. And this is only the tip of the iceberg

If you turn the stream up loud enough and go to the bathroom in the dark in the next room over you can relive the festival experience of being stuck in a porta potty while your favourite artists play

Now that the pandemic has paused all physical touring, it’s worth wondering what digital equivalents could replace them 🔮 Lots of fascinating recent examples: -Fortnite x Travis Scott -Justin Bieber x David’s Vlog -Mayor Pete’s podcast blitz

there are two futures I've heard for live music: more consolidation (Live Nation, AEG buying out smaller promoters & venues) or more fragmentation (smaller promoters dominating as cities ban large gatherings) this is incredibly hard to predict, but which side are you on for now?

    1) every major social platform is a game 2) in due time, every major gaming platform will be social i personally like the second scenario much better than the first

Please, don’t ask music journalists how much it costs to get them to interview you or your artist. Not only is it unethical, it’s insulting. And that means you won’t likely be getting them to work with you ever.

Update on last Friday's campaign: Fans paid artists $7.1 million in just 24 hours ($2.8m more than March 20th). Thank you for supporting artists impacted by Covid-19, and mark your calendars for the next on June 5th!

Music livestreaming has a discoverability problem. There's so much noise and activity online, and little infrastructure to help fans sift through it. I talked with some of the apps trying to build that infrastructure now, including Bandsintown and Dice >>

Something amusing but also slightly concerning that has come up a few times recently: people mistakenly calling my newsletter "Music & Water," instead of "Water & Music." is this a sign that I need a new name? or that people just prioritize music over hydration? 😝
