    The Indian Meteorological Dept deserves commendation for its accurate forecasting of - saved a lot of lives. The National Disaster Response Force also did a good job. Luckily the tide was low when the storm struck. Bad as it was it could have been much worse.

    Spoke to my Bengal colleagues. cyclone damage is much higher than initial estimates. Death toll could cross 100 Devastation all over southern WB districts. Really worried about Sunderbans. Still don't know the extent of destruction. Why is this not top national news?

    Reports of very extensive damage in Sunderban, S/N 24 Parganas, Greater Kolkata by Seems loss of lives was limited. But WB needs all support and attention from everyone to recover from this massive destruction. Condolences to bereaved families.

    Simple proposal: Central Govt must take responsibility to arrange, coordinate and pay for trains and inter-state buses. State Govt must take charge of free transport of intra-state migrants and free transport from railhead or bus terminus to their villages.

    Just as the Election Commission can requisition and hire any vehicle during polling days, why cant state governments use all available vehicles (on due payment) to transport migrant workers?

    Reminder: Today, between 6 and 9 pm tweet at your state govts to deploy their own buses to intercept the walking workers and take them home

    Exactly, not looking good. I have been wondering why has the focus shifted away from reporting "daily new cases" to "active cases" or "recovered" just when daily new cases have breached 5,000 and are rising.

    This is not looking good. Of the nations above a lakh cases only India and Peru are still trending strongly up.

    Thanks for remembering. I had suggested National Register of the Unemployed. Would have been very useful in this crisis.

    Govt now saying lack of proper data base on migrant labour is making it tough to identify them for targeted relief. Wish & had focused on building a register for migrant workers rather than NRC/NPR. I think had even suggested a formal labour survey!

    IMP: writes to that Jharkhand's workers in Ladakh & N-E be airlifted back. Modi govt needs to act soon. In touch with Adivasi workers at this border road site in Kargil. They are in dire straits + desperate to get home for sowing work
