Written on economic impact of coronavirus: in sum, is not a mere recession & is bigger than 2008-9 because it chews away at most important institution in capitalism, which is labour market. Massive structural change needed - and will happen:

Intvs with and on both led on supposedly worrying amounts of debt forcing tough choices. They should instead have focused on ’s obs that government debt service heading for lowest level since the 1940s! There is no fiscal emergency.

Maradona on meeting the Pope in 1987: "I argued with him because I was in the Vatican and I saw all these golden ceilings and afterwards I heard the Pope say the Church was worried about the welfare of poor kids. Sell your ceiling then amigo, do something!" Rest in Power

Robert, equivalent to almost the entire additional government debt this year has been bought by the Bank of England. Who, exactly, do you propose we repay...?

The Chancellor bottled it today in the by punishing public sector workers as well as some of the poorest people inside and outside our country instead of setting out a credibile plan for growth.

Nothing sums up Maradona better than the streets of Naples. Every working-class district has its homage to him, decades after he left Napoli. The People’s Champ.

With public sector pay freezes and cuts to foreign aid, has Rishi Sunak's spending review shown him to be a typical Tory class warrior? | | LIVE at 7PM

I am struck by BBC reporters' continued use of household budget metaphors to describe the UK economy re. the spending review. That is a deeply political and contested framing that comes hand-in-hand with a pro-austerity argument. I don't think it is good analysis or "impartial".

The cut in the aid budget - made worse by no set date for restoration - is shameful and wrong. It’s contrary to numerous Government promises and its manifesto. I join others in urging MPs to reject it for the good of the poorest, and the UK’s own reputation and interest.

NEW on : There is no sense of a V-shaped recovery. We are on track for a low-growth, poor jobs year. A substantive fiscal stimulus could have brought us back on track, so public finances are backed by a strong economy. But didn’t deliver it. (1/3)

This is a joke, I think...? Dodds has made correct calls this year in politically difficult circs & won meaningful concessions from government. Idea ditching Shadow Cx after big Tory fiscal event would somehow *help* Labour is just wild, crazy stuff.

Can learn about how the economy and public borrowing works?! She’s spreading more myths and misleading the public with the “we’ve got no money left” rubbish. She’s not the only journalist to repeat these lies. We need to make official complaints

This is perhaps the most important graph in the document - share widely. Interest rates are so low that despite the extra borrowing, we're paying less on interest than ever. We're nowhere near running out of money and there is no need for cuts. Share widely!

We've not run out of money. The credit card is not maxed out. Interest rates for govt are close to the lowest in human history. And the Bank of England is issuing enough QE to cover the entire cost of borrowing this year.

Plenty of commentators trying to talk up the "shock" of the figures. There is no "shock" here - we knew it was bad. The problem is that the government is failing to martch up to the challenges either now, or ahead.

We’re disappointed that and the Government did not take the opportunity of today’s to do the right thing and make the £20 uplift to permanent.

As the chancellor announces that increases to the minimum wage will be slowed down, a reminder that 9.4 million employees (including 3.7 million key workers) are paid less than £10 per hour. Everyone deserves enough to be paid enough to live on.
