Newly unredacted sections of the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse revealed that Australia's highest-ranking Catholic priest was aware by 1973 of child abuse by the clergy and had considered measures of avoiding situations that “might provoke gossip about it.” Findings made by the Commission in December 2017 were redacted in order to avoid prejudicing the trial of Cardinal Pell, who was charged with child sexual abuse and later unanimously acquitted by the High Court.
