The Train – You Make Me Feel Alright – Obscure US Fuzz Blaster (1969?)

The Train – (I Want) Sunshine/ You Make Me Feel Alright – Full Tone 45-1002 (US 1969?)

You Make Me Feel Alright features one of the meanest, scuzziest fuzz sounds around. The lead vocals appear sung through clenched teeth and buttocks and stink of moonshine and too much interference with the local poultry as a misplaced peck seems to aid in the attempt at a falsetto. The band plough this field of putridness with a wonderful lack of competence. Jesus where the hell has this single been hiding all my life? The closest comparison I can think of is the folly that is Dickens -Don't Talk About My Music.

The A side is a feeble attempt at being more commercial and making it to the big time, but once again they fail in sublime fashion. It’s a sunshine Bubblegum singalong, very similar in construction to its B side, charming but sadly missing the Fuzz.

The band was were from Aberdeen, South Dakota... (Thanks Bob for the info) The only other release on the label I could find was by Blue Prism who covered Sam & Dave’s Hold on (I’m Coming). Any more information out there?

Mantis - (You’re My Cake) Amanda Blake – Obscure Aussie Psych (1969)

Mantis  - (You’re My Cake) Amanda Blake/Julie Julie -CBS BA-221704 (Aus 1969)

The descriptor nutty little cracker is surely fitting for this one…There’s a bit of Easybeats going on in the backing vocal parts, but the vocals and OTT exuberant delivery take this to a place just to the left of demented. The B side Julie Julie is more restrained, but also has a pretty weird and deranged vibe.
As far as I can work it out the recording is an off-shoot of Vyt and The World. when Vyt (Vyt Zvirzdinas) left performing to get into event production and promotion, the band re-named themselves Mantis and released this single. At the very least Mantis was comprised of ex The World founders Chris Eggleton (guitar) and Arthur “Dreamy” Watson (RIP). There is no link to the Mantis on Vertigo.

PS: If anyone can help me locate copies of Vyt and The World's Little Timothy and Flower Children singles - please let me know!

The Pages – High School – The earliest MC5 cover (1970)?

The Pages – High School/ Sugar on The Road – UA Recording -667-54300 (US 1970)

The Pages from Iowa were a long-standing cover band (1964 -1972). Starting as a quartet covering the obvious Beat/Garage hits of the day they became best known for adding a  horn section in the early 70s. High School  was their sole release and came at a time when half the band wanted to take a more Proggy jazzy approach, whilst the others wanted to go more “Rock”. So minus horn section, the band deliver this straight cover of the MC5 tune from Back in The USA
Although lacking the punch and swagger of the original, The Pages win the prize of the earliest known cover of an MC5 original. The B side Sugar on the Road is a Ten Years After cover from Cricklewood Green

Note: There are mentions that this single was released in 1968, but as far as I can work out the actual release date is probably late 1970, or early 1971

In-Sex – Alligator Wine -Heavy US Garage/Psych (1970)

In-Sex – Alligator Wine/ Action In The Street – Hammer Records H-3002 (US 1970)

With a bit of time off over Xmas, I have been able to revisit some purchases I hadn’t been able to delve into properly…and this one goes straight to the top of the pile. Alligator Wine was the 2nd and last single by In-Sex who are better known for Penitentiary Planet Blues/ Space Man…however this one blitzes all over their other effort. Their cover of Alligator Wine takes the essence of Screamin’ Jay Hawkins, rolls it in grease with a heavy dose of lard before infusing it with amphetamine -laced psychedelics  for its glorious fuzzed-out finale…God this is simply mind-blowing

Enjoy!

Hard Knox – Backstreet Life - Obscure US Hard Rock (1977)

Hard Knox – Backstreet Life/Midnight Celebration – Sunspot Records SSP2001 (US 1977)

Here is an interesting one I recently picked up. It’s what is called a “Google 0”, meaning no information can easily be found on the Web...

Anyhow, earlier in the year a digger found 4 copies of this single in a store in Southern California, being a Crunching Killer obscurity all 4 copies were quickly snapped up by the usual target audience namely a gaggle of  US, UK and Swedish collectors with an interest in all things Bonehead…and me.

Due to it being found in California, you would expect it being a local band, however one red herring is that the bag it comes with might be from a pressing plant in Texas…I am sure the credits on the label reveal more clues so someone is bound to come up with the relevant information at some point.
What of the music? Backstreet Life is Hard and Heavy without slumping into an indigestible dirge, it is further enlivened by a surprising near psychedelic break that really lifts proceedings. The B side is more snarly in approach coming across like a Proto Punk ZZ Top attempting to twin Alice Cooper with The Stones…

So here it is; a mysterious release by a band no one knows delivering two fine slabs of chunky meaty morsels that deserve wider recognition. Up to you now

Utrecht Record Fair November 2019 - Day 3 - Sunday

The last day...

Managed to make some good deals on a few items I had spotted over the last couple of days.

Quite amazed by John Bull Breed's off-the-wall, I'm a Man. Also nice to get the UK issue of The Blue Stars to accompany my NZ issue

The Kim Fowley is zany in a good way. Of particular notice is the mysterious Hard Knox single with a Bonehead side along with a more Greasy Stonesian B side. More on that one soon...

Anyway, the last 3 days have taken their toll on my legs and wallet. Another Utrecht while still in pre Brexit mode is a bonus, god knows what will happen next time, specially in terms of the pounds to Euro conversion...Bye for now, Robin signing off

Utrecht Record Fair November 2019 - Day 2 - Saturday

Saturday was a  bit more of a subdued but more affordable day...

Two sumptuous pop gems stand out. The Benelux only Majority single - Charlotte Rose, and Mary Kent's (who is she?) wondrous take on Jimmy Webb's Vietnam lament -  Lost Generation
Funny, It had been on my radar for a while, then I find 2 copies the same week

I had never seen the rather fetching German Idle Race pic sleeve before, neat...

Sunday will probably be a relaxed affair... until then

Utrecht Record Fair -November 2019 - Friday

and once more unto the breach we go...

Although I am here twice a year, I am still surprised by some of the finds that crop up...

Utrecht is and will remain the best record fair in the World

Whereas in the UK, most dealers peddle their rarest stuff online, here in Holland enough dealers save their best stuff for the fair itself.
Also there is enough stuff to go round as buyers/collectors have a wide spectrum of tastes, so your niche or preferences should be amply satisfied by the collectables on show

I was well chuffed to find the last big UK 60s want that I was missing, namely the Calum Bryce in perfect condition. I pretty much blew half my budget on this one record, but the deed has now been done "gulp"

Also picked up a vast array of 60s crackers, from South Africa, Australia, UK and mainland Europe

The Bryan Miller's Destruction is a real fuzz fest. The Bad Boys was a UK band, but this gem only released in Italy, Lebanon and Brazil!!! The Steve Davis is pounding and meaty...

Some cool pic sleeves, The Bull's Eye is a great piece of grungy Danish Psych

A few Glamsters and Hard Rockers were found. The Prisoners was a new one on me, a German private release saddling Bonehead and Glam...

At 7.05 this morning, some 12 inch buyers waiting patiently for their "funky" stuff to be served

Bring on tomorrow!

Philadelphia Brown – Vote For Rock and Roll – UK Junkshop Cruncher

Philadelphia Brown – Hold Me/ Vote For Rock and Roll – Strawberry C.J.5 (UK 1976)

Was Philadelphia Brown some obscure Philly Soul session guy? Was Philadelphia Brown a potent form of Pennsylvanian heroin? Nope and Nope... Philadelphia Brown was an outgrowth of Angel who under the tutelage of Andy Scott and Mick Turner released a couple of great Sweet soundalike Rabble Rousers namely Good Time Fanny and Little Boy Blue on Cube.

Philadelphia Brown was comprised of ex Angels - guitarist Bob Banasiak (who also was in Fancy with Nigel Benjamin), singer Brian Johnson and drummer Steve Rickard

They ended up releasing  2 singles on the President Strawberry imprint. While the first one  1-2-3 is of limited interest, on this single’s B side they certainly hit the jackpot. Unshackled of the obvious Sweet trappings, Vote For Rock and Roll is a loud, crunching, hand clap driven monster with one hell of a hook and full production values. The A side Hold Me is an obvious top side choice as more commercial in a chugging Rubettes-like pastiche fashion. Hold Me was also covered by Hello. While it is an enjoyable ride, you are bound to flip sides over and over again to regal in this unheralded 70s Gem

Flamin’ Groovies- Under The Bridge London Review 7/06/19

There are curses and then there are curses… For The Groovies, bad luck never seems to be far away, and once again it had struck as Roy Loney fell after going through security at the airport in SF, paramedics intervened and instead of boarding the plane to the UK, he was wheeled away to hospital.

So the band flew in without him. A very difficult situation to contend with for the band as the shows were supposed to highlight the Teenage Head album… so without Roy it was going to prove impossible to go ahead as planned.

The show must go on…

The band reconvened in the UK and worked out a set, including some tunes from Teenage Head that they felt they could pull off on stage without Roy. Following gigs in Manchester, Glasgow and Newcastle, they arrived at Abramovich’s vanity Roadhouse at Stamford Bridge

Although through Facebook, many knew that Roy wasn’t appearing, the information obviously hadn’t reached everyone who attended. I didn’t see a sign at the door explaining the situation. This should really be remedied for the next shows

Anyway back to the music. With Cyril being the only original band member, on display a lot depended on him, however the band really rose to the occasion. Chris Von Sneidern (CVS) who is a real talent in his own right, having released some stellar Powerpop albums in the 1990//2000s. Chris also has a new album “Emerge”, which I am about to discover. Last time (with Chris Wilson) CVS was on bass, but this time he switched to guitar which suited him and the band much more. Atom (his real name!) Ellis filled bass duties with much aplomb and provided a solid bottom end. Last, but not least, Tony Sales on drums really lifted proceedings with his drumming and his vocals were really good taking the lead of on several Teenage Head songs and providing great harmony work with CVS.

Cyril was simply Cyril. It must be remembered that he is 71 years old, and while he mostly pulled it off, many of the songs were being played too slow. Shake Some Action in particular needs to be shifted up a gear, especially as it’s the opener.

There were some great moments, but the key moment for me was the guitar interplay between CVS and Cyril on Don’t Put Me On with both men playing parts that gelled wonderfully together. Thanks to Tony’s vocals;  the Teenage Head section also really worked, great to finally hear the Cyril’s slide part on High Flyin’ Baby

As the tour progresses, the band will get even better, they just need to work out another 3 or 4 songs. If Cyril wants to play some 80s material, I strongly suggest they drop Way Down Under (always a naff tune) and try Way Over My Head instead. Also the set was sorely missing Whiskey Woman.

It's all about managing expectations and making the most of a difficult situation. Roy is not going to re-appear during this tour which must be incredibly frustrating for him and everyone concerned.
So I suggest everyone goes to see the band and marvel at the effort the band is putting into these shows, and actually enjoy the songs on the understanding that this may be the last time that a Cyril fronted band will ever play Europe again

There will be a Mike Wilhelm tribute show in SF in October, I hope this is the occasion where all Groovies past and present, can come back together in a suitable tribute to the great man

In the meantime – good health and recovery to Roy

Red Hawk - Tennessee Man – Swiss Proto Punk 1974

Red Hawk - Tennessee Man/ Rock N‘ Roll Lady –TSH (Switzerland 1974)

Here’s a real weird and obscure one from Switzerland circa 1974. They may have a tenuous grasp of English (what the hell are they singing?) and of their instruments, however out of its amateur oblivion two gems rise up to the surface and shine in their own light.
Both tunes ROCK in their own individual ways…
Tennessee Man is best described as Swiss In-bred Hillbilly Proto Punk, it goes from the frantic skip-a-beat-and-you’ll-won’t-miss-it to more subtle half speed interludes where they even go for a haunting backing vocal effect.
Rock N‘ Roll Lady is perhaps even better, alternating from sub Silver Machine riffing to Flamingo period Flamin’ Groovies…

All hail Bruno, Rolf, Andy, Jurg and Roland!

A Little Shopping Trip: Australia April 2019

A fitting find. Only released in OZ, it is a special edit with added/different piano

April was nuts… I mean really nuts. First there was the Utrecht record fair, which proved to be one of the best ones yet, then 10 days later - I ....

Let's step back for a moment and get some context:   I've always loved Australian bands, The Easybeats and Vanda and Young have been a total obsession of mine since my teens.

In 77/78 The Saints and Radio Birdman played some of the best shows I have ever witnessed. Although I was aware of the Ugly Things comps, I never owned them, but I had been collecting some favourites over the last few years including the Black Diamonds and (Australian) Playboys.

More recently I discovered The Throb, Moods, D-Coys and Hergs. This opened up a whole (New) world to me.
I loved the  intense moody side of some of these releases, the judicious (and often unexpected) choice of covers, plus the sound itself and the exuberance contained within

I swooned over the mix of pure  wildness and rawness akin to the best of US Garage Punk twinned with more UK-like professional recording techniques and production A marriage made in heaven.

It was not just Australia, New Zealand also provided some killer including a certain Social End Product, which I manage to get last year.

I quickly found out that I wasn’t the only one seeking out these singles, many a time I was bidding high with other lovers of these amazing releases, and often losing out. So a couple of months ago, I decided to go the whole hog and booked myself a flight to Sydney to coincide with the Glebe record fair

Once my flight was booked things started to happen...

A close friend was helping to sell the collection on behalf of a widow of a record collector of great taste. So even before flying out, 47 singles were already waiting for me when I landed.

I was also privileged (with another Aussie collector) to have access to someone selling a huge amount of records. A flurry of emails ensued, sending back forth wants lists and updates of what might/might not be found.
There was also  another friend/blogger who had bought a collection a while back and had several of the top titles I was after.
Now, I am certain that all this wouldn’t have happened without me actually booking a ticket and letting a few people know I was flying out
On top of that there were some great shops I visited such as Greville, Liquorice Pie and Vicious Sloth in Melbourne and Egg plus Papa Disquo in Sydney. I didn’t have the time to visit more, the 7 days I was there simply weren’t enough

The Glebe record fair was a lively and friendly event as the best record fairs are… A good return here too

Further contacts were made and I was lucky enough to venture and stay in the Blue Mountain at Jon’s who’s idyllic mountain retreat/farm was augmented by a huge barn/warehouse harbouring  100s of thousands of records.

Digging,

Digging again...
Digging some more...
In fact I visited several other warehouses/factories spending hours going through pile after pile of 45s. I could have bought more, but I set myself a limit of around 200 singles, which I could include in my carry-on luggage. There was just so much more...

What follows is a list of the main finds. There were also a few spares and upgrades which are not on this list

To finish off a perfect trip, on the last evening, I was invited with a friend to spend some time with Mark Taylor where we were privileged to hear top US garage singles and Aussie gems played LOUD on one of the most amazing sound systems known to man. In fact, with the positioning of magnets and other tricks… I am sure there was witchcraft at play...It was a religious experience, totally mind-blowing.

Never had I experienced such depth, clarity and such POWER while listening to what could be dismissed as lo-fi recordings. Incredible, just incredible...

Will I be back? I would like to think so, however my Aussie wants list has shrunk to about 50 (from being close to 200), but the whole experience from the friendliness, generosity and warmth I was shown, plus the amazing weather and scenery means I will most certainly return and not just for the records

PS: I have been back for over 2 weeks now  and still haven’t been able to play every record yet... No wonder!
