Hatchback Leasing

Hatchbacks are an increasingly popular model of car and, though many types are broadly listed in this category, there are variations - you'll hear of the term 'hot hatchbacks', for example, which are hatchbacks with more powerful engines added. All in all, hatchbacks are aesthetically pleasing, reliable performers that are suitable for families, as they can typically accommodate four passengers comfortably.

What is a hatchback?

The hatchback is arguably one of the most popular models in the UK. This is because there’s such a variety of this type of car available, from small city runarounds to modified sports versions.

Although many people think that a hatchback is defined by its small size, it’s actually named for its boot space. The boot in this vehicle is the area behind the back seats and, to access it, the back of the vehicle opens up completely. This is unlike a saloon, where the boot is closed off and sits separately to the main body of the car. In a saloon, the boot cannot be accessed from the back seats - you have to exit the vehicle. It’s for this reason that hatchbacks are more compact and generally smaller than saloons.

The term was originally used in the 1960s, when only a few models were available, the first one being the Renault R16. Popular models today include Ford Fiesta, Ford Focus, Mini Hatchback, Seat Leon, Volkswagen Golf, Audi A3 and Mercedes-Benz GLA.
