As the fourth largest South Korean automobile manufacturer, Ssangyong began life as two separate companies. The Ha Dong-Hwan Motor Workshop (est. 1954) and the Dongbang Motor company (est. 1962) merged to form Ha Dong-Hwan Motor company in 1964, producing specialist vehicles such as Jeeps for the US military and trucks and buses. Since their inception they've had a reputation for building tough workhorse vehicles.
In 1986 they were taken over by SsangYong business group and since then have produced vehicles under the name SsanYong motors, which translates to double dragon. They really started producing the vehicles as we know them today in 1991 through a partnership with Daimler-Benz, producing their first SUV the SsangYong Musso. This was set up as a low cost challenger to Daimler rival Mercedes-Benz.
Since then, SsangYong have proven to make SUV and four wheel drive cars that are both reliable under the hood and light on the pocket. In 2010, the company was bought out by Mahindra and Mahindra and this has led to them revising and updating their cars to become more luxurious and generous in standard interior features to keep up with competitors.
A SsangYong car is a fantastic option for those who want to experience the power and size of an SUV but don't want to pay for the high costs associated with Mercedes-Benz, Land Rover or other large car manufacturers. They are great for large families, those who love outdoor hobbies and those who need a lot of boot space.
