How do you change a society’s merciless, individualistic ethos that values personal freedom above all else and convince them of the duty towards others and preservation of life?

It’s no doubt tough. Islam is a collective religion. But that means being able to prioritize. In a zoom halaqa last week, mentioned how Allah has promised us trials and afflication, and so it follows that there is, within the deen, ways to approach this...

Muslims and Muslim leaders need to take this seriously (and Alhamdullilah many have, but some think congregation cancellation is unnecessary). Lives are at stake. In Malaysia, a single congregation lead to the virus spreading to six countries.

Jumuah Mubarak! Even with no congregational prayer, still so much blessing in the sunnahs of Friday like reading Surah Kahf, looking fresh, etc. and we wait patiently, praying Allah swt invites us back to His houses soon.

Everything might be shut down, our mosques might be closed, but we prioritize each other and we place our hope and fears with Allah. Ibadah’ orients the heart and nourishes us for the days to come, and for the duties we must fulfill towards others. Tawakkul asks no less.

No time to tolerate incompetency and utterly pathetic attitudes towards preserving life. No faith in leaders who have no concern for the well-being of their people and sow constant fear.

The recent Delhi pogrom - Muslims set on fire, their bodies thrown in sewage drains - and incompetent leaders in the bloody aftermath have left thousands in relief camps. Now they face a pandemic.

We - in our quarantine - begin to glimpse what restriction of movement and curfews feel like, but with the promise of benefit and an end. Imagine them imposed by cruel regimes, or being rendered stateless - the degree of corruption, treated as lesser than beasts.

May Allah forgive inaction. At the very least, make fierce dua for the people of Syria, Uyghurs, the Rohingya, Kashmiris, Palestinians, and more who are caged in, facing nightmare conditions. If the virus hasn’t already spread to them imagine the destruction if (when?) it does.

Harrowing - for every inconvenience many of us face, many more endure impossible situations. “You want us to wash our hands? ...Some people can’t wash their kids for a week. They are living outdoors.”

    4. Chinese state media is also not unique in trying to rewrite the narrative - the Fox News network has been accused to be a "petri dish for misinformation" & criticized for its sudden shift in coronavirus coverage:

Interesting article and data. “While in U.S. media, prominent terms associated with Li Wenliang include ‘silenced’ and ‘authorities’, these terms are notably absent in Chinese media. Chinese media instead focus on him being an ‘ophthalmologist’ and expressing ‘condolences’.”
