From a Public Health perspective. the invasion of Australia by the British has contributed immensely to the poor social, physical and emotional well-being of the Indigenous Australians. Australia was invaded before settlements by the invaders were created. Prior to this invasion we were free and healthy peoples with our own laws, customs and governance over our own nations. There was no international law at the time that protected the rights of the Indigenous Australian bef...ore the invasion by the British. In fact no human rights international laws at the time of the invasion protected any Aboriginal nation in the Southern Hemisphere from being violated. For the past 228 years we have been a human race that has been exploited, robbed, violated, discriminated against and poorly researched upon. This is no different to other Countries / Island Nations in the Southern hemisphere. Australia Day celebrations is a date in Australia that should be changed for it emphasises the lack of human compassion demonstrated towards the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples following the invasion of Australia. To celebrate Australia Day on the 26th January clearly demonstrates the continued lack of human compassion shown to us by the invaders and those they have allowed into this country ~ Dr Elvianna Dorante-Day (Member of the Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community), Bachelor of Nursing, Registered Nurse Masters of Arts (Aboriginal Issues), Graduate Diploma in Public Health, Doctor of Public Health (PhD)
