RhoDeo 1552 Goldy Rhox 242

Hello, today the 242nd post of GoldyRhox, classic pop rock, in the darklight is an American singer-songwriter born October 2, 1945, best known for the 1971 mystery album. When he was 15, his father passed away. Fulfilling his father's request, our man graduated from Iona Preparatory School, and briefly attended Villanova University, dropping out after four months. While at Villanova he became friends with singer/songwriter Jim Croce. After leaving Villanova, he became associated with famed folk music agent Harold Leventhal for several months before teaming up with personal manager Herb Gart for 18 years. For the next six years he performed at venues and events.

His albums did not match the commercial success of today's mystery album but he became a major concert attraction in the U.S. and overseas His repertoire included old concert hall numbers and the catalogues of singers such as Buddy Holly, and another influence, Frank Sinatra. The years spent playing gigs in small clubs and coffee houses in the 1960s transformed into well-paced performances. His first concerts at Carnegie Hall in New York and the Albert Hall in London in 1972 were critically acclaimed.

In recent years our man has continued to tour North America, Europe (2011, 2012) and Australia (2013). In June 2011 he appeared at the Glastonbury Festival in Pilton, UK and in 2014 at the Stagecoach Country Music Festival in California.

***** ***** ***** ***** *****
Most of the albums i 'll post made many millions for the music industry and a lot of what i intend to post still gets repackaged and remastered decades later, squeezing the last drop of profit out of bands that for the most part have ceased to exist long ago, although sometimes they get lured out of the mothballs to do a big bucks gig or tour. Now i'm not as naive to post this kinda music for all to see and have deleted, these will be a black box posts, i'm sorry for those on limited bandwidth but for most of you a gamble will get you a quality rip don't like it, deleting is just 2 clicks...That said i will try to accommodate somewhat and produce some cryptic info on the artist and or album.

Today's mystery album is the second studio album by the American mystery singer-songwriter, released by United Artists Records on 24 October 1971. The album was released to much acclaim, later being included in the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die. The folk/rock album reached number one on the Billboard 200, containing the chart-topping singles "mystery album title track" and "Vincent." .

The mystery album was intended as a unified work, as our man has said that he was influenced by The Beatles' Sgt Pepper album and envisioned today's mystery album to be a similar album. Believing that an artist's work should stand by itself, he generally did not offer explanations for his work's themes or meaning, though he did describe the title song as involving "a sense of loss". The album was dedicated to Buddy Holly, a childhood icon of his, and was released in 1971 on the heels of the '60s, the defining decade of his generation. It has a melancholy feel and rather sparse arrangements. At the time of the writing our man’s first marriage was failing and the optimism and hopefulness of the 1960s was giving way to the nihilism and hedonism of the 1970s.

The album was recorded May and June 1971, in Studio A at The Record Plant on West 44th street in New York City. The producer, Ed Freeman, decided to use accomplished musicians who were not "studio musicians who could act like a metronome" because he wanted to capture the feel of a "band that was really cooking," so he rented a rehearsal studio and they rehearsed the title song for two weeks before they recorded it. Because our man rarely phrased his singing the same way twice there were as many as 24 takes for some of the voice parts, but the rhythm tracks are mostly one take.
The album was reissued on June 27, 2003 remastered, along with the addition of two bonus tracks. Here today ...N'Joy

Electric 80's aims to capitalize on the continuing popularity of all things 80s as seen in the success of the Hit Me Baby One More Time TV show, the continuing influence of 80s music on current bands and the ever present fashion nods to the era. This is a definitive collection 45 of the very best electronic, synth and new wave tracks from the early years of the decade. Of all the Eighties compilations out there, this was almost certainly put together by someone who experienced the decade first hand. There are some inspired choices here and quite a few rare and unusual remixes and 12" versions - some superb ('Fade to Grey' for example) and some that are rather dated and frankly superfluous.

It's nice to see some of the more quirky tracks such as Foxx's 'Underpass' and Fad Gadget, as well as the Mobiles fabulous 'In Love With a German Film Star Star'. One probably could have omitted Marilyn and a few others, but all in all a very good collection and a fair reflection of a creative era.

RhoDeo 1552 Re-Ups 44

Hello, with 15 re-ups today most of the current requests have been fulfilled, however there's still thousands of postings that could be re-upped, all it takes is a simple civilized request at the page where its originally posted. That said i've seen a number of requests for music i posted earlier this year 2015, these are on the long list simply because most visitors here have already had these choices recently, my priority lies with older posts (i've been posting for 9 years now)

Storage maybe dirt cheap these days -compared to 5 years ago, but the hosts are much more money orientated and look at turnover and notice that keeping data longer than 1 month isn't making them money. Thus the coming months i'm making an effort to re-up, it will satisfy a small number of people which means its likely the update will  expire relatively quickly again as its interest that keeps it live. Nevertheless here's your chance ... asks for re-up in the comments section preferably at the page where the expired link resides....requests are satisfied on a first come first go basis. As my back up ogg hard disk is nonresponsive currently, i most likely will post a flac instead~for the the pre medio 2011 posts~ but i would think that is not really a problem...updates will be posted here and yes sign a name to your request and please do it from the page where the link died!

Looka here another batch of 15 re-ups, requests fullfilled upto 24th December...N' Joy

RhoDeo 1552 Quest 22

Hello,

Elven Quest... A series that will be running into the new year, 24 episodes of Elvenquest. It's is a sitcom about a misanthropic writer of fantasy novels who finds himself whisked away into a parallel universe by an elf, a dwarf and a warrior princess, where he must undertake to find the Sword of Asnagar in order to save Lower Earth from the evil Lord Darkness before he can get home. I wonder how much fun there is to be had in The Underworld.. N'Joy

xxxxx xxxxx xxxxx xxxxx xxxxx

Plot

During the Third Age of Elven Princes of Lower Earth, a band of noble warriors – Vidar the Elf Lord (Boyd), Penthiselea the Warrior Princess (Winkleman) and Dean the Dwarf (Eldon) – plan to save Lower Earth from the evil rule of Lord Darkness by searching for the Sword of Asnagar, "for whoso'er wields the sword shall rule all of Lower Earth."[2] However, they first have to discover "The Chosen One" who will lead them to the Sword, whose name is "Amis". Amis is a dog belonging to Sam Porter, a misanthropic fantasy novelist in the real world.

Vidar, Penthiselea and Dean travel via a portal to take Amis, who is with Sam at a book signing in Totnes High Street, to Lower Earth. When they take Amis, Sam follows them and both Sam and Amis arrive in Lower Earth. When they arrive in Lower Earth, Amis is transformed into a human (played by Lamb), retaining many of his canine traits, such as becoming excited when there is a knock at the door, and being totally devoted to Sam. Sam believes he has been kidnapped by deranged fans until he sees the world outside the room in which he awakes. He asks to be sent back home, but is told that the portal is closed and can only be opened by the same Sword of Asnagar that Amis must seek.

Sam decides to travel with Amis, Vidar, Penthiselea and Dean to find the Sword. Meanwhile, Lord Darkness (Alistair McGowan) is planning to stop them from finding the Sword, helped by his evil but dimwitted assistant Kreech (also played by Eldon). Sam proves invaluable in using his modern instincts to trick his way past various creatures barring their way. For instance, he bluffs a three-headed troll guardian of Darkness' fortress in the same way as he would a security guard at a nightclub, distracting it long enough for Dean the dwarf to attack. He also tends to expect secret tunnels and concealed doors because that's the sort of thing he would have written into one of his plots. He is often right.

Characters

Sam Porter (Stephen Mangan). An author of fantasy novels with a jaded attitude, especially towards his more fanatical fans. As the series opens his career and personal life are not going well.

Amis, the Chosen One (Dave Lamb). Originally Sam's pet dog and best friend in the world, he transforms into a human in Lower Earth but retains canine traits and behaviours.

Vidar the Elf Lord, (Darren Boyd), last of a mighty family of Elf Lords, and the leader of the Questers, despite being somewhat dim. His name may be inspired by Víðarr, a god in Norse mythology associated with vengeance.

Penthiselea the Warrior Princess (Sophie Winkleman Series 1-3) (Ingrid Oliver Series 4) in silver breastplate armour and thigh-high boots, who has been promised to Vidar since childhood. Sam is very interested in her, but having been raised as a Warrior Princess she has no concept of relationships with men. Her name may be inspired by Penthesilea, a legendary Amazon warrior-queen.

Dean the Dwarf (Kevin Eldon), a mighty if diminutive warrior with unsavoury personal habits.

Lord Darkness (Alistair McGowan), Lord of Evil, whose efforts to dominate Lower Earth are frustrated by the Questers and his own staff of extremely dimwitted minions.

Kreech (Kevin Eldon), the Right Hand of Darkness, and only slightly less dimwitted than the other minions.

Other characters played by Chris Pavlo.

Sundaze 1552

Hello, last week i downloaded a decent copy of the new Star Wars but when i played it, within seconds upon watching a female scavenger in the desert, it dawned on me here's Skywalker 2 and yes within 10 mnutes she pulled out stunts with a stolen Millennium Falcon not even Han Solo would have dared..the force must be with her. A droid has important information that must be delivered to the good guys, so the bad guys hunt for the droid on a desert planet explosions non stop on and off planet. Then when they jumped to safety straight in the hands of han solo who brought along more enemies more explosions and near death finally safety but some bitch phoned the baddies and real time minutes later back to bombardments. I had enough Disney is treating us as idiots, i understand now why JJ Abrahms didn't want to do it, they must have offered him a shitload of money to film this. A bunch of monkeys could have written better dialogue. A 1st grader could have made a plot that had less holes in it. What a shocking imbecilic state the US moviegoers must be that they like this (IMDB 8.6) Or maybe IMDB is for sale/corrupt, a company like Disney understands the importance of these numbers and will know how to value it accordingly....

In 1998, Youth (Martin Glover) decided to set up, LSD - Liquid Sound Design as Dragonfly's sister label, specialising in chilled out soundscapes, sonic beats and mellow grooves. Its only fitting that the last and eight posted befalls it's founder, not that his spirit wasn't fully present these last weeks, but today's albums all bare his name.. N'joy

xxxxx xxxxx xxxxx xxxxx xxxxx

Martin Glover, also known as Youth or Orion, (born 27 December 1960 in Farnworth, Lancashire) is a record producer and a founder member and bassist of Killing Joke.

Glover originally named himself Pig Youth after the reggae chanter Big Youth, who was popular with late 1970s London punk bands. At age 15 he was in a punk band named The Rage, which toured with The Adverts. Later he joined 4" Be 2" - a band formed by John Lydon's brother Jimmy Lydon - and recorded the "One of the Lads" single with them.

Glover is most famous for being the bass player in Killing Joke. He left the band in 1982, together with Ben Watkins he released 2 albums, The Empty Quarter and Delerium, soon after he founded his own commercially orientated dub funk band Brilliant, which recorded one album in 1986 before later disbanding.

In 1989, Youth and Alex Paterson started the WAU! Mr. Modo label. Their early releases of a selection of industrial techno dubs and heavy sound system dubs from artists such as Napthali, Manasseh, Bim Sherman and Jah Warrior are long deleted and fetch high sums in private sales.

Youth's connections with dub continued in the mid-1990s when he was asked by Adrian Sherwood to remix some of Bim Sherman's tracks for a reworking of the Miracle album. He also recently appeared on a Ted Parsons/NIC dub album, contributing a remix which opens with a sample from Glen Brown's "Version '78", a track originally released on the South East label.

In the early nineties, Glover formed techno and house music duo Blue Pearl together with American singer Durga McBroom. They scored a handful of hit singles including their blue vinyl debut "Naked In The Rain", which reached #4 in the UK Singles Chart and was also a #5 dance hit in the U.S. in 1990.

Glover is credited with founding the first psychedelic trance record label, Dragonfly Records, as well as the Liquid Sound Design and Kamaflage Records labels. He is well known on the psychedelic trance scene, collaborating with Simon Posford and Saul Davies as Celtic Cross, with Greg Hunter and Simon Posford as Dub Trees, and on the project Zodiac Youth. He has performed both full-on trance as well as chill-out DJ sets at several Return to the Source parties, and released the Ambient Meditations 3 mix album on their label in 2000. His Butterfly Studios were also home of the Return to the Source offices circa 1999-2002.

Glover is a member of the band Transmission, together with Simon Tong of The Verve, Paul Ferguson of Killing Joke and Tim Bran of Dreadzone. He also played guitar on several tracks on the 2007 Client album "Heartland."

In mid-2010, Glover teamed up with Alex Paterson (The Orb) to compile a retrospective compilation album of tracks from the WAU! Mr Modo label. The album titled "Impossible Oddities" was released on CD and double vinyl on 25 October 2010 via Year Zero records.

On 27 October 2012, during the International Festival of Music Producers and Sound Designers SOUNDEDIT, Glover was awarded The Man with the Golden Ear Award

This is a solid collection of dubby psychedelic goodness. It's not as purely dub as Dub Trees, more like dub trance

Hello, it's X'mas and the stresses from buying gifts and preparing the food extravaganza is over, but the family get together is already showing the faultlines again, time to play some inter-generational music and dance with the grandparents, good thing it's all at hand here.

This seven cd set (4 last week, 3 today) should be a part of any collection that presumes to take American music -- not just rock & roll or rhythm & blues -- seriously. Atlantic Records was one of dozens of independent labels started up after the war by neophyte executives and producers, but it was different from most of the others in that the guys who ran it were honest and genuinely loved music. Coupled with a lot of luck and some good judgment, the results trace a good chunk of the history of American music and popular culture.. ... N'joy

Atlantic Rhythm and Blues 1947-1974

xxxxx xxxxxxxxxx xxxxx xxxxx

Unlike its immediate predecessor, Atlantic Rhythm & Blues 1947-1974, Vol. 5 (1962-1966) isn't dominated by a handful of major artists. Instead, it offers a selection of singles from one-hit wonders, journeymen, soul men, and major artists. Atlantic entered a distribution deal with Stax/Volt early in the '60s, and Stax artists are found all over this collection, including Otis Redding ("These Arms of Mine," "Mr. Pitiful"), the Mar-Keys ("Last Night"), Booker T. & the MG's ("Green Onions") and Rufus Thomas ("Walkin' the Dog"). They function as an excellent counterpoint to Atlantic's artists, which began to lean toward sophisticated, string-laden uptown soul. Of course, there were exceptions to the rule -- the Ikettes' "I'm Blue" was hot and sexy, the Falcons' "I Found Love" was as gritty as a roadhouse, Chris Kenner's "Land of 1000 Dances" was a stomper, and Joe Tex's "Hold What You've Got" simply stormed -- but hits by the Drifters ("Up on the Roof," "Under the Boardwalk," "On Broadway"), Doris Troy ("Just One Look"), Ben E. King ("Don't Play That Song (You Lied)") and Barbra Lewis ("Baby I'm Yours") brilliantly embody the uptown aesthetic. By featuring both sides of '60s soul, Vol. 5 accurately captures the era, and offers a generous portion of timeless music as well.

xxxxx xxxxxxxxxx xxxxx xxxxx

In the mid-'60s, Atlantic signed Aretha Franklin, who proved to be every bit as soulful and seminal as Otis Redding, the main star on their Stax subsidiary. Reprsented by such hits as "I've Been Loving You Too Long," "Respect," "Try a Little Tenderness," "I Never Loved a Man (The Way I Love You)" and "Do Right Woman -- Do Right Man," Franklin and Redding certainly play a major role on Atlantic Rhythm & Blues 1947-1974, Vol. 6 (1966-1969), but they don't dominate the proceedings. There's an abundance of classic singles from major artists like Sam & Dave ("You Don't Know Like I Know," "Hold On, I"m Comin'," "When Something is Wrong with My Baby," "Soul Man"), Don Covay ("See-Saw"), Joe Tex ("A Sweet Woman Like You," "Show Me"), Wilson Pickett ("Funky Broadway," "In the Midnight Hour," "Land of 1000 Dances," "Mustang Sally"), Booker T. & the MG's ("Hip Hug-Her") and Percy Sledge "When a Man Loves a Woman"), as well as one-hit wonders like Eddie Floyd ("Knock On Wood"), the Capitols ("Cool Jerk") and Arthur Conley ("Sweet Soul Muisc"). There's a wonderful balance of deep Southern soul, smooth uptown crooning and soul-pop, demonstrating the richness of not only Atlantic/Stax's roster, but of late-'60s soul. Not only that, but Vol. 6 contains so many great singles, it's startling to think that one label released them all.

With the notable exception of Aretha Franklin, who stayed true to gospel-inflected deep soul into the early '70s, Atlantic's R&B/soul roster began to smooth out as they entered the '70s, as evidenced by Atlantic Rhythm & Blues 1947-1974, Vol. 7 (1969-1974). There are a few holdovers from the Stax label who continued to play deep soul, but most everything here is smooth -- it's soul, not R&B. That may bother fans of the early volumes of the series, which was devoted to down-and-dirty R&B, but there are still a number of classic singles here from Archie Bell ("Tighten Up"), Clarence Carter ("Slip Away"), Roberta Flack ("The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face"), R.B. Greaves ("Take A Letter, Maria"), Brook Benton ("Rainy Night in Georgia"), Tyrone Davis ("Turn Back the Hands of Time"), King Floyd ("Groove Me"), the Persuaders ("Thin Line Between Love and Hate"), Betty Wright ("Clean Up Woman") and the Spinners ("Could It Be I'm Falling In Love," "I'll Be Around," "Mighty Love"), as well as Aretha ("Think," "Baby I Love You"). If you listen hard enough and study the absence of major stars outside of Franklin, the Spinners, Flack and Benton, it's possible to see the end of Atlantic's reign as an R&B/soul powerhouse, but if music this good represents the death throes of a label, then that indicates how great Atlantic really was.

Hello, today the 241th post of GoldyRhox, classic pop rock, in the darklight are an English rock band formed in Muswell Hill, North London, in 1963 by brothers Dave and Ray Davies. They are regarded as one of the most important and influential rock groups of the era. The band emerged in 1964 during the height of British rhythm and blues and Merseybeat, and were briefly part of the British Invasion of the US until their touring ban in 1965. Their third single, the Ray Davies penned "You Really Got Me", became an international hit, topping the charts in the United Kingdom and reaching the Top 10 in the United States.Between the mid-1960s and early 1970s, the group released a string of hit singles; studio albums drew good reviews but sold less than compilations of their singles. They gained a reputation for reflecting English culture and lifestyle, fuelled by Ray Davies' observational writing style.

After a fallow period in the mid Seventies, the band experienced a revival during the late 1970s and early 1980s with albums Sleepwalker, Misfits, today's mystery album, Give the People What They Want and State of Confusion. In addition, groups such as Van Halen, the Jam, the Knack, the Pretenders and the Fall covered their songs, helping to boost their record sales. In the 1990s, Britpop acts such as Blur and Oasis cited the band as a major influence. The Kinks broke up in 1996, a result of the commercial failures of their last few albums and creative tension between the Davies brothers.

Today's mystery album is the seventeenth studio album by the English rock group, released 10 July 1979. Following the minor success of their previous album, the band recorded the majority of the album in New York rather than London. Unlike the more nostalgic themes of many their albums prior to Low Budget, the album contains many songs that appeal to current events of the time. Musically, the album is a continuation of the band's "arena rock" phase, resulting in a more rock-based sound and more modern production techniques.

Despite being a relative failure in the UK, today's mystery album was a great success for the group in the US, not only becoming their best-selling non-compilation album, but also peaking at #11 on the American album charts. The lead single, "(Wish I Could Fly Like) Superman" was also a minor hit in the US, reaching #41. The album was also praised by many critics in the US, although reception was more mixed in the band's native UK. Here today a SACD MFSL 2003 remaster...N'Joy

Hello, last week i saw episode 2 of Tripped, a wonderfully insane new British series, its about switching dimensions and it goes too far explaining it here, but should you come across it, it gets a big thumbs up from me. Anyway this episode one of the deadbeat leads drops in at a dimension where he was a megarockstar that mysteriously died 4 years earlier. One of his cult history claims was that his gran offered him a choice when he was 10, either a guitar or a transformer and he chose the guitar..our deadbeat however admitted having had the same choice and decided upon the transformer and thereby a huge dimensional gap opened up betweem him and that other version of him. I guess our lives have plenty of moments where our path in live diverges, a good thing we aren't aware of them, many people have a hard time chosing as it is. (The Germans have an excellent saying "Die Qual der Wahl" wich translates as the agony of choice.)

Today's artists started of in Dublin with musical friends who's choices lead them to become one of the most famous rockbands of the planet, still going strong. However today's artists path gave them plenty credits from the musicscene, not so much sales , and alas too few people have ever seen their live shows. They were more interested in remaining aggressively idiosyncratic, developing their own unique brand of transgressive, avant-garde performance art and a wildly anarchic take on post-punk rock. Much of their work was outstandingly original, and yet it has remained criminally ignored and rarely heard, largely due to the near-total unavailability of their back catalog. Here today for you all to N'Joy

xxxxx xxxxx xxxxx xxxxx xxxxx

The group was led by the theatrical singer/songwriter Gavin Friday (born Fionan Hanvey in 1959), who as a teen fell in with a group of like-minded individuals who dubbed themselves the Lypton Village. While some of the social club's members, including a pair of youths named Paul Hewson and David Evans -- later known as Bono and the Edge -- went on to form the superstar group U2, the remaining members founded the less-commercial Virgin Prunes, taking their name from the local slang for so-called "outsiders" and "freaks," a recurring lyrical theme. In the early 1970s, where every member received a new identity and where they could escape from dreary and predictable Dublin life and be anything they wanted to be.

Friday and Guggi first gave the teenage Hewson his alter-ego and now-famous moniker (taken from "Bonavox", a hearing-aid shop on Talbot Street in Dublin City Centre), later shortened simply to "Bono". Known for their outrageous and controversial stage performances, led by theatrical singer/songwriter Friday, the band began playing small shows in Dublin, gaining them a cult audience and ridicule from the culturally conservative community.

Friday and fellow vocalist Guggi, along with third vocalist Dave-iD Busaras, guitarist Dik Evans (brother of U2's The Edge), bassist Strongman (Trevor Rowen, brother of Guggi) and drummer Pod (Anthony Murphy), completed the original lineup. Pod left the group and was replaced by Haa-Lacka Binttii (né Daniel Figgis). With Binttii on drums, tape loops and keyboards, the band secured a deal with Rough Trade Records. They released their first single, "Twenty Tens" on their own Baby Records label (distributed by Rough Trade) in late 1980, followed by a second single, "Moments and Mine", in early 1981.

Two other tracks recorded with Binttii were released during 1980 before conflicts with other members forced him out of the band. "Red Nettle" was included on NME compilation C81 and "Third Secret" appeared on Cherry Red compilation Perspectives and Distortion. Work had already started on the project "A New Form of Beauty" while Bintti was with the band, but after he was replaced by Mary D'Nellon (drums), some of his tracks were rerecorded and his name was not included in the credits.

"A New Form of Beauty" was a project that originally contained four chapters and was released in various formats - 7" single, 10" single, 12" single and a cassette. All four parts appeared on an Italian version of A New Form of Beauty, which was released as a double album, although with a different track listing to the cassette version.

In November 1982, the Virgin Prunes released their debut album ...If I Die, I Die (produced by Colin Newman of Wire) as well as Heresie, a French box set. Commissioned by Yann Farcy after seeing them perform at the Rex Club in Paris, Heresie was based on a loose examination of insanity. In 1984, both Guggi and Dik Evans, unhappy with the music business, left the band. This forced drummer D'Nellon to switch to guitar and allowed Pod to return as the band's drummer. The Virgin Prunes started to record but abandoned the album Sons Find Devils, which has never been released.

A retrospective video titled Sons Find Devils was released in 1985; this video had nothing to do with the unreleased album of the same name. In May 1985, rarities compilation Over the Rainbow was released.

In July 1986, the band, now a four-piece, finally released a new album, The Moon Looked Down and Laughed (including recordings of music written for Sons Find Devils). Later that year, Friday left the group. His departure was confirmed in the liner notes of the band's 1987 live album The Hidden Lie, which contained a short statement confirming the band's breakup.

After disbanding as Virgin Prunes, D'Nellon, Strongman and Busaras formed an offshoot group called The Prunes, which released three albums between 1988 and 1990 (1988's Lite Fantastik, 1989's Nada, and 1990's Blossoms & Blood. Dik Evans played on Lite Fantastik while 17-year-old Justin Kavanagh (aka Valley Limberg) from the Dublin hardcore band Mutant Asylum (now a member of Paranoid Visions along with his cousin Cormac Figgis, aka The Master Switch) took the helm as guitarist for "Blossoms & Blood". In 1993, Kavanagh went on to form Gormenghast and Snifferdog. Binttii's youngest brother, Jonathan Figgis, was the boy who appeared on the cover of the second Virgin Prunes single, "Moments and Mine".

Friday went on to have a reasonably successful solo career in both music and film, while Guggi remained an influential artist in Dublin and Busaras continued to record as a solo artist in Ireland. After 20 years of self-imposed seclusion from the rock world, Dik Evans gave an overview of he and his brother The Edge's early years in U2 for the December 2005 issue of Word Magazine.

Daniel Figgis later became a composer and multimedia producer and curator, becoming composer in residence with Dun Laoghaire/Rathdown, Dublin. One of his compositions, "Post Production", a 23-section suite for four musicians, was performed at the Winter Garden Theatre in New York City in December 2006. In 2008, the Arts>World financial centre commissioned Figgis to compose and perform the sole European commission to celebrate their 20th anniversary of arts programming. His multi-disciplinary festival, "Snakes & Ladders", appeared on Broadway on 8 January 2010 at Symphony Space.

The Virgin Prunes discography was remastered and reissued on Mute Records in 2004. The set of reissues included ...If I Die, I Die, The Moon Looked Down and Laughed, Over the Rainbow, Heresie and an album of selections from the A New Form of Beauty series. In 2006, Busaras, Guggi and Friday contributed a track to the sea shanty collection Rogue's Gallery, appearing in the track listing as Three Pruned Men.

On 4 October 2009, three original members of the band - Friday, Guggi and Dik Evans - performed two classic Virgin Prunes songs, "Sweethome Under White Clouds" and "Caucasian Walk", at Carnegie Hall as part of "An Evening with Gavin Friday and Friends", to celebrate Friday's 50th birthday.

New Form of Beauty captures very closely the controlled and often anarchic art damage that the band was doing in a live setting early on. Industrial sounds wrapped around more conventional guitar, bass, drum, and keyboard trappings, singers Gavin Friday and Guggi were both outrageously androgynous, utterly captivating frontmen. Collected here, via Mute, in wonderfully remastered CD form, are the original 7", 10" and 12" singles. Only "Sweethome Under White Clouds" -- in a different version -- ended up in the band's later catalog. Basically, this is the sound of tension, intensity, off-the-rails eroticism, pagan spirituality, and an utterly twisted sense of the perverse as wrapped into a post-punk aesthetic. The band's influences range wide and far from folk songs to Throbbing Gristle to the dynamics of bands like Joy Division, PIL, and even Germany's Can, though the Prunes' sonic approach was utterly unique. It is nocturnal always, often nightmarish, like the nether soundtrack to a carnival sideshow, it is, to borrow from Jean Dubuffett, art brut , outsider art of high poetic and aesthetic quality even when it is falling apart. Highly recommended for its excess as well as its achievement.

If I Die, I Die is the Virgin Prunes' proper debut album. The first three (of seven) parts of a conceptual work entitled A New Form of Beauty, issued as 7", 10", and 12" singles preceded it in the same calendar year. Produced by Wire's Colin Newman, the album's 14 tracks are the epitome of post-punk adventurism. Here, tribal drums and edgy, spooky, detuned guitars and bouzoukis cross paths and meld with synthesizers and primitive drum machines in an onslaught of off-kilter creativity where everyone from the Fall, PIL, New Order, Siouxsie & the Banshees, and even Bruce Springsteen are called in for reference in a brew that is dangerous, primal, and excessive. Two androgynous frontmen in the foppish Gavin Friday and alluring Guggi create alternate ambiences from warped yet sweet Irish balladry to shrieked poetry. And while the set is messy to be sure, it is far from off-putting. In fact, it is easily the band's most consistent and enduring effort. The albums opens with the haunting, nocturnal minimalism of "Ulankulot," an intro with tom toms and drifting keyboards layered carefully in the background, wordless chanted backing vocals and an electric bouzouki courtesy of guitarist Dik. It immediately gives way to its antecedent "Decline Sand Fall." It's the same tune, only Friday is out in front of it digging deep into the temporality of childhood and what remains of it. Its effect is startling, nocturnal, and tense. In "Sweethome Under White Clouds," the theme is given dimension as Guggi and Friday wail like muzzeins over a reverbed guitar coming from the netherworld and augmented by a soprano saxophone and a synth bassline. "Pagan Lovesong," the album's proper single, is one of the most angular cuts on the set. Here, the Prunes employ a riff straight out of early Gang of Four, chant their refrains, and swirl the keyboards and drum machines à la Devo yet keep everything so gothic and strange; it's not only compelling, it's infectious. The rest of the album follows suit, with the raucous new wave of "Baby Turns Blue," and the mainstream rockist "Ballad of the Man" that sounds like a wrong-speed outtake, Springsteen's The River and the Mott the Hoople version of "Sweet Jane!" This is a wonderfully confounding and sometimes campy and often disturbing exercise in unfettered creativity that has stood the test of time very well. It is the most necessary Virgin Prunes record of all and captures best what they were capable of when focused.

The sound of 1986's The Moon Looked Down and Laughed is the sound of a band being pulled apart by the differing ideas of its members. This is easily the tamest Virgin Prunes record on the market and the band's nadir. There are more conventional song structures here, on cuts like "Heaven," "Just a Lovesong," and "Betrayal," but they are unfocused, utterly forgettable melodically and even atmospherically. Atmosphere was always the Prunes' strong point. David Bowie's early-'80s work seems to be a strong influence here, and where previously Gavin Friday had been able to carry a song by the sheer force of his voice, his overly enunciated and exaggerated vocal gestures here just water down the proceedings further. But the real tragedy here is the lack of wildness and adventure. The record sounds tired and uninspired, leaving the band to whimper itself out of existence rather than roar.

Over the Rainbow is a double-CD odds and ends compilation of Virgin Prunes singles, B-sides, compilations and rare tracks assembled in gloriously remastered audio by Mute. This version differs from the original LP and the double-LP versions considerably. For starters, the original compilation contained only CD one of this set, which features the band's first A-side, "Twenty Tens," as well as Rough Trade's (C812) track entitled "Red Nettle," and "Pagan Lovesong Vibe-Akimbo" form the 12" version of the single. Also included are a pair of cuts -- "Mad Bird in the Wood" and "Jigsawentallama" -- that were released on flexidisc with the Dutch magazine Vinyl.and a couple of other Rough Trade comp cuts. The original CD issue of Over the Rainbow also contained the studio tracks from Hérésie. This one, with a different cover (the "Baby Turns Blue" single sleeve) removes those -- because first the band's own label, Baby, and now Mute have released both live and studio Hérésie cuts on their own in another package -- and add more rarities to the mix. Included here are "Third Secret" from the Perspectives & Distortions: Cherry Red Rarities comp, "The Faculties of a Broken Heart" from the limited-edition Baby Turns Blue 12", "The Happy Dead," which was recorded for the soundtrack to the New Form of Beauty film but was never released, "White History Book," set on tape during the Moon Looked Down and Laughed session but went unused, the A-side of the band's second single, "In the Greylight," "Revenge" from the Virgin Prunes EP, and "Love Lasts Forever," a single from the New Rose label in 1984. Sure, it's for fanatics, but it's also of real interest to anyone wanting to check out the glorious monstrosity that was the Virgin Prunes.

RhoDeo 1551 Re-Ups 43

Hello, with 28 re-ups today most of the current requests have been fulfilled, however there's still thousands of postings that could be re-upped, all it takes is a simple civilized request at the page where its originally posted.

Looka here another batch of 28 re-ups, requests fulfilled upto 19th December...N' Joy

RhoDeo 1551 Quest 21

Today the start episode 21.. N'Joy

xxxxx xxxxx xxxxx xxxxx xxxxx

Hello,

In 1998, Youth (Martin Glover) decided to set up, LSD - Liquid Sound Design as Dragonfly's sister label, specialising in chilled out soundscapes, sonic beats and mellow grooves. LSD was as natural progression for Dragonfly keen to create an outlet for more experimental and down-tempo music as well as satisfying the demand for the post club chill out sounds. Since 2007 the name has changed to "Liquid Sound" and is now managed by Pathaan. Today 3 outfits from Youth's LSD stable.... N'joy

xxxxx xxxxx xxxxx xxxxx xxxxx

Orchid-Star was put together by Pete Ardron at the start of 2005, initially as a vehicle to perform music he had written for DJ sets, mostly for chill-out rooms. The sound is lush and colourful with a strong world music influence - Indian, Arabic, Celtic, African and more - fused with everything from psychedelic chill and dub to drum & bass and funk. Part electronic, part live - vocalists - Myo and Samanta Ray, guitar & bass - Pierre Luigi, electric fiddle - Kait Farbon, full-size marimba - Becky Dell, percussionists - Jon Bongly and Becky keyboards - Pete, dancers Diane Everitt and SandRa and occasionally more.

Orchid-Star have featured an increasing list of guest performers from here and abroad, vocalists, instrumentalists, dancers and visual artists, giving a real variety to their shows, performing with anything from 3-10 people on stage. Both core members and guests have diverse musical roots, several with classical training and members with backgrounds in rock, reggae, soul, funk, jazz, world and other fields, having played with people as varied as Frank Sinatra(!), Jimi Hendrix(!), Tim Finn of Crowded House, True Life Confessions, Basement Jaxx, Soul2Soul, Hallucinogen and Stomp. Pete's last major project before this was Glow, well known on the global-dance/world-music scene in the late 90s and with whom several other Orchid-Star members also served time.

By the summer of 2005, with a regular core established, the band had started to take on its own sound, identity and direction, moving away from the initial plan and concentrating more on the more up-tempo dancy tracks - a trend reflected in the first new tracks to be written specifically for the Orchid-Star. Highlights of the first year included the main stages at Kingston Green Fair, the London Green Lifestyles Show and Big Green Gathering and the main headline slot on the largest of Glastonbury Festival's fringe stages, Croissant Neuf where the Orchid-Star and Pete also received about 3 hours of airplay on the festival's radio station, Radio Avalon. The Orchid-Star are as at home in a club environment as on a festival stage and have played at the Synergy Project, Planet Angel, Acid Monkey, and Edensounds amongst others.

2006 saw the band concentrate mostly on finishing off their first album "Birth", in Pete's opinion the best thing he has ever produced - a collection of tracks originally written for sets for Planet Angel, ID Spiral, Bingly Bongly and Liquid Connective While people who have seen the Orchid-Star live will be familiar with most of the tunes on "Birth" they may be surprised to find that, whilst this is still a very rhythmic, big, lush sounding album, it is predominantly down-tempo. This is a legacy of the chill-out roots of this project - the second album, already half-written, promises to a much more up-tempo affair.

2007 saw Orchid-Star back out live more including performances at Sunrise, Antiworld, Glade, Bowl and Waveform festivals, and clubs like Planet Angel and Synergy with sets ranging from their first full-on dance set to some special performances of 'Birth' in it's entirety. The band saw 2008 in in style with 2 gigs in the first 12 hours and the long awaited official release of their first album 'Birth' on Liquid Sound Records (1st Feb) including a 2nd CD - rebirth with the entire album remixed by Youth, Tripswitch, Kuba, Subsonar and Pete. Their first (9-mix) single 'Passion' was released in October on Archangel Recordings. 2009 has again been a quiet year live with all the bands energy going towards finishing off the follow-up to Birth

Orchid-Star's debut, “Birth”, released on Liquid Sound in 2008 along with ‘reBirth’ - remixes by Youth, Tripswitch, Kuba, Subsonar and band leader Pete Ardron is regarded by many as a psychedelic chill classic. Its follow-up “Faster” retains all the trademarks of the first but is a significant progression. It still takes the listener to exotic, mysterious places but this time the live element, both instrumentally and vocally, and the personalities of those involved, are altogether more obvious. Living up to its name it is as much a treat to dance to as to listen - a joyful and passionate celebration of life and spirit.
Psychedelic world-fusion - Indian, Irish, African, Latin, Middle Eastern, Balkan Gypsy – driven by a mix of DnB, trance, progressive, funk, dub, ska with just the occasional downtempo groove, wrapped in a rich and vibrant orchestral-like production. Atmospheric and visually charged throughout, it's a seductive piece of work, which grows on you with each listen.

Brother Culture is an MC based in Brixton, London. Simon Fajemisin (half Nigerian, half Irish) started his career around 1982 for Jah Revelation Muzik sound system. As part of the Twelve Tribes of Israel Rasta brotherhood, Brother Culture toured in the USA, Jamaica, Caribbean and Canada throughout the 80’s. In the early 90's, he started to MC at London’s Dub Club, in which he made new associations with active UK dub/roots producers such as Adrian Sherwood and Manasseh.

In the mid-90's, the UK dub/roots scene evolved in new sub-genres of music such as drums & bass. Brother Culture proved to his fans that he was able to adapt his unique style to the new emerging scenes and began to collaborate with labels such as Liquid Sound Design. Since 2000, he continues to travel the world as an established MC artist spreading out the positive message of Jah music. He also continues to record new productions for many producers and bands such as The Prodigy (« Thunder » from the album « Invaders Must Die »), Mungos Hifi, Hammerbass, Roots Garden Label, Dubmatix or Kinyama Sounds.

Isis is a 12 tracks set produced by Youth from Dragonfly and famous UK based producer Nick Manasseh. A UK roots album including several big tunes as Darker Side Of Town, previously released as 7’’ on Roots Garden Records two years ago. It’s basically a kind of psychedelic roots dub album with vocals. And I experimented in not writing songs with verses and choruses like I normally do. It’s more like my voice as an instrument -

RhoDeo 1550 Grooves

Hello, almost X'mas and we're being bombarded by sentimental muzak and I felt it needed an anwers by offering you something nostalgic, great Rhythm and Blues from before most of you were born, may it brighten your days....

This seven cd set (4 today, 3 next week) should be a part of any collection that presumes to take American music -- not just rock & roll or rhythm & blues -- seriously.

Throughout the late '40s, '50s and '60s, Atlantic was one of the premier independent record labels in America, and one of their specialties was R&B. Atlantic had a remarkable staff of producers and A&R men who could find the singular talent of the day, and they assembled a truly extraordinary roster from the outset. The entire saga of Atlantic Records' peak years is documented on the seven-disc box set Atlantic Rhythm & Blues 1947-1974. The first installment of the series has a number of classic singles, even if it lacks the star power that drives the later editions. Much of this music is close to blues, whether it's down-home piano blues or jump blues, with a few vocal groups emerging by 1952. Part of what makes Vol. 1 special is that it contains such relative obscurities as Frank Culley's "Cole Slaw" and Joe Morris' "The Apple Jack" alongside such classics as Stick McGhee's "Drinkin' Wine Spo-Dee-O-Dee," Tiny Grimes' "Midnight Special," Professor Longhair's "Mardi Gras in New Orleans" and the Clovers' "One Mint Julep," as well as hot tracks from Ruth Brown, Joe Turner, and Willis Jackson. It's an excellent set that captures the early days of R&B, just as it was breaking free from the blues.

During the years covered on Atlantic Rhythm & Blues 1947-1974, Vol. 2 (1952-1955), Atlantic began to gain a firm hold in the marketplace as Ruth Brown and Joe Turner began to score hits ("Mama, He Treats Your Daughter Mean" and "Wild Wild Young Men" for Baker, "Honey Hush" and "Shake, Rattle & Roll" for Turner), and the label signed Ray Charles, LaVern Baker and Clyde McPhatter & the Drifters. Of these three artists, the Drifters had the most hits out of the starting gate, scoring with "Money Honey," "Such a Night," "White Christmas" and "Honey Love." Charles began writing a number of classics, including "The Midnight Hour," "Mess Around" and "I Got a Woman," and Baker had hits with "Soul On Fire" and "Tweedle Dee." All of these songs -- plus excellent sides from the Clovers ("Ting-A-Ling," "Good Lovin'," "Lovey Dovey"), the Chords ("Sh-Boom"), Tommy Ridgley ("Jam Up") and the Diamonds ("A Beggar for Your Kisses") -- are on Vol. 2. These are some of the greatest R&B singles ever recorded, sounding just as vital decades after their original release, and the songs that weren't hits are nearly as good -- sometimes just as good -- as the ones that were.

Atlantic hit its stride between 1955 and 1958, the years covered on Atlantic Rhythm & Blues 1947-1974, Vol. 3 (1955-1958). Nearly every song on this double-album/single-disc set was a major R&B or pop hit and has turned into a genuine pop music classic. In hindsight, the depth of talent on Atlantic's roster in the late '50s becomes all the more astonishing. Between 1955 and 1958, Joe Turner was still turning out rollicking, infectious jump blues, as reprsented by "Flip Flop and Fly," "The Chicken and the Hawk," "Corrine Corrina" and "Midnight Special Train," and LaVern Baker continued to have hits ("Jim Dandy," "Play it Fair"). But what makes theis disc remarkable is the juxtaposition of Ray Charles' ascension into the greats with new signings like the Coasters, Ivory Joe Hunter and Chuck Willis. Charles truly came into his own during these years -- this disc alone contains "This Little Girl of Mine," "Drown in My Own Tears," "Hallelujah, I Love Her So" and "Lonely Avenue," songs that have become an indelible part of pop and R&B. the Coasters also arrive with a vengeance, contributing "Down in Mexico," "Searchin'" and "Young Blood," along with "Smokey Joe's Cafe," which was a release from their early incarnation as the Robins. Hunter and Willis each released classics during this time ("Since I Met You Baby" and "Empty Arms" for Hunter, "It's Too Late" and "C.C. Rider" for Willis), while Clyde McPhatter began a solo career, and the Cookies, the Drifters and the Clovers all contributed great singles. The result makes Vol. 3 an intoxicating, whirlwind journey through some of the most vital records of the '50s.

Atlantic Rhythm & Blues 1947-1974, Vol. 4 (1958-1962) continues the streak of hit singles and classic R&B cuts that Atlantic began in earnest in the years covered by Vol. 3. Most of the album is devoted to hits by the Coasters ("Yakety Yak," "Charlie Brown," "Along Came Jones," "Poison Ivy," "Shopping for Clothes"), Ray Charles ("What'd I Say," "The Right Time," "Let the Good Times Roll"), the Drifters ("This Magic Moment," "There Goes My Baby," "Save the Last Dance for Me"), Ben E. King ("Spanish Harlem," "Stand By Me"), Chuck Willis ("Betty and Dupree," "What Am I Livin' For?," "Hang Up My Rock and Roll Shoes") and Clyde McPhatter ("Long Lonely Night," "A Lover's Question"). There's also a handful of great singles from Solomon Burke ("Just Out of Reach (Of My Two Empty Arms)"), the Bobbettes ("Mr. Lee") and LaVern Baker ("I Cried a Tear," "Saved") thrown in, along with the first fruits from Atlantic's distribution deal with Stax/Volt (Carla Thomas' "Gee Whiz"). In general, Atlantic's singles -- and R&B in general -- began to expand its boudnaries during these years, incorporating more sophisticated, lavish productions, particularly in the Drifters recordings. Despite the strings and tympanis, these songs remain soulful and arguably represent the peak of Atlantic's R&B achievements in the late '50s.
