So...in all of my WAH WAH WAH crybaby mourning over the loss of a radio station that (quite frankly) I haven't listened to in several years, I realized I had a handful of shows that I'd never posted here on the Ol' Wagon.  As usual, this one is digitized right from a high-bias master cassette that I recorded the night of the event, so you're getting GREAT sound quality.

This is the Fab T-Birds at the height of their powers, with an added bonus of Carlos Santana showing up to throw in a solo on one song.  To my taste...it's a rather PERFUNCTORY solo, it doesn't sound like they had a rehearsal...but it's a unique radio event...which is why we loved us KFOG, back in the day.

Excellent FM Source @320

With albums like Sunburst Finish, Axe Victim and Drastic Plastic, Be Bop Deluxe built a loyal cult audience who embraced front man, Bill Nelson, and his distinct guitar work. Traces of pop, glam rock and progressive music are apparent through this recording, and the band’s desire to try different styles of music was supposedly why they never attained platinum status. Nelson disbanded Be Bop Deluxe in 1979 to form a new group, Red Noise. That band lasted just one year, only to see Nelson depart and launch a solo career.

Highlights of this show include the opening track, "New Precision,” and the following number "Dangerous Stranger.” ”Superenigmatix” is a complex but very listenable song and the remaining tracks also feature several strong songs taken from the four Be Bop albums: "Lovers Are Mortal,” "Panic In The World,” "Forbidden Lovers,” and the always heartwarming, "Love In Flames.”

California's Los Lobos are the reigning kings of Tex-Mex/Rock Espanol. This is truly a band of brothers, led by guitarist/vocalist Henry Garza and his younger, bass-and-drum-playing siblings Jojo and Ringo. Like a lot of groups, they had to move away to achieve fame--in their case, to Nashville. But after the release of their EP, Willie Nelson heard them, put them on tour as his opening act, and recorded them at his studio. Stylistically, the Garza brothers' bilingual songs about love and life combine Stevie Ray Vaughan blues, Santana-style guitar licks and R&B.

KFOG-FM is being folded into local AM station KNBR, and will stop broadcasting "Adult Album Alternative" and turn into a "Sports Talk" radio station later this week.  KFOG had a good run: 37 years.  In the late 80s and 90s, they made a solid commitment to broadcasting live shows from the Warfield and Fillmore, and "in-studio" shows" from The Plant studios on the other side of the Bay in Sausalito.  While to my tastes, the programming was a little bit too focused and mainstream, I also understood they were running a business and trying to attract a specific demographic.  They did a good job.  I was 26 when they began broadcasting; now I'm 63.  It's hard to ride through time as your audience ages.

Here's a live broadcast from KFOG I recorded in 1994.

Our pal Anonymous pointed that that I had the wrong date listed on this, and sure enough, Anonymous was RIGHT.  So I retagged the files, renamed the folder, and updated the text file:

David Bowie-Odds And Sods

*THANKS TO THE ORIGINAL POSTER

We post a lot of Bowie here. It's really a ploy to keep our numbers up. You can be sure that this guy is good for at least 500 views. It's the old adage give the customers what they want and they'll always come back for more. So while I have your attention might I interest you in some of our other wares? If you notice we have a feature called "The Adult Bookstore Motel" there you can find many, many curios and artifacts, visit often. You'll also notice there are various compilations posted here. Please leave a nice comment to those that are concerned that your well being is being taken care of. These authors are Draftervoi, Enoch, and SilentWay.  Now a word about this post, with bootleggers sometimes you never know what you'll get. For instance this boot list's "America" but I'll be damned if I can find it. "Young Americans" is not listed but it is on here. However most times the Leggers offer better album covers than the majors could ever offer. Like this "Man Who Sold The World" take off. If you'll notice Mr. Bowie does a couple of impersonation here and I'm trying to figure out who they are sounds like Bruce, Marc Bolan, Bono,or Tom Waits? I don't know the next one, a dead on Iggy Finally I encourage you to post this anywhere you want, after all this is about sharing, however a nod to where you got this is always appreciated, thanks Andy one of our best customers. 02. Ethylene
03. Graduated
04. Shredding The Document
05. Perfectly Good Guitar
06. Walk On

08. Only The Song Survives
09. Cry Love
10. Your Love Is My Rest
11. Drive South
12. I Wanna Be Sedated

I have a cassette of the original live broadcast.  The original transmission of the show dropped the feed from the Plant several times; KFOG covered by shifting to their usual playlist, and going back to the Plant when the link was recovered.  The original broadcast did NOT include the encore of the cover of the Ramones "I Wanna Be Sedated."  I never digitized my original tape because it dropped the broadcast...but even if it was complete, it would have missed the WONDERFUL cover of the Ramones "I Wanna Be Sedated."

This is NOT sourced from one of my master tapes.  As the show includes the (originally unbroadcast) encore, this likely comes from a later rebroadcast of the show.  Given that the original broadcast was marred by repeated drops of the live feed, it's not surprising KFOG rebroadcast the show.  While I don't know the generation, this is an excellent recording, and I recommend it to you.

Requiem For KFOG-FM

After years of being an easy listening station, KFOG-FM, converted to a rock format in 1982.  At first, they were just one of many formatted stations in the Bay Area, but by the late 80s, they made a grab for the brass ring; they wanted to be heir to the legacy of KSAN-FM, one of the first "free formatted" stations launched in the late 1960s.  While KFOG had a playlist, they made a regular commitment to broadcasting live concerts from local venues, plus "studio shows with a small audience," usually recorded at The Plant, in Sausalito (and later on at Fantasy Studios,  in Berkeley).  KFOG pioneered the "Adult Album Alternative" format.

Their on-air personalities, Morey, M. Dung, and Rosalie, became part of the local rock landscape, and their broadcasts of the Bay Area Music Awards featured jams you never would have expected, such as Metallica's Kirk Hammett jamming with Carlos Santana.

KFOG also put out an annual "Live From The Archives" CD, starting in mid-90s, with tracks from their various live broadcasts in the preceding year.  Early volumes of this are highly collectible, selling for stupid-money on EBay.

All that comes to an end this September, when KFOG-FM will be folded into KNBR, and became a "sports talk" station, becoming KNBR-FM 104.5.

They had a good run; times change.

So...let's raise a glass of whatever we're drinking to one of the GREAT SOURCES OF QUALITY LIVE MUSIC recordings over the last four decades; it is not likely we will see their equal again.

Here on Voodoo Wagon,  we have the following KFOG shows,  sourced from my master cassette tapes.  I usually used a high bias tape, so most of these sound great...
I think all of these links are still "live," if not, please let me know.  KFOG: requiescat in pace.

Armaggedon - self titled {1970} NOW BACK FROM THE DEAD

As Presented by Chris Goes Rock Archived from 2007

Not to be confused with the UK outfit, this German release from 1970 is an absolute belter of an album. Hard rock with definite progressive and psychedelic edges, the guitar of Frank Diez drives this one all the way.

Why didn't this group record more than just one album? Their self-titled album is a heavy progressive masterpiece with excellent, Hendrix-influenced guitar work and vocals by Frank Diez. Armaggedon was the start of his long and impressive career. Their album had six tracks, and two of them were cover versions. Most impressive was the 10-minute version of Jeff Beck Group's "Rice Pudding". This track had some of the greatest heavy guitar riffing to appear on a German record. Their version of Spooky Tooth's "Better By You, Better Than Me" was also competent enough. In addition, both Frank Diez and Manfred Galatik (electric piano, bass and vocals) wrote great songs, as typified by the tracks "People Talking" and "Open". Michael Nurnberg (bass, rhythm guitar) and Jurgen Lorenzen (drums) provided a strong backing. Armaggedon's album has rocketed in price during recent years, due to the ever increasing interest. However, demand for the group was poor way back in 1970, and Armaggedon soon broke up. Diez never played material with a similar energy again, his next step was to join the 'slightly-above-average' jazz-rockers Emergency.  He later played with Randy Pie, Karthago, Ihre Kinder and Atlantis.  Luckily the Armaggedon album was released on CD in 1991 with a sharp and clean digitally remastered sound (in a limited edition of 1,000 numbered copies).~CGR

Musicians:
Frank Zappa, Jean-Luc Ponty, George Duke, Ian Underwood, Ruth Underwood, Bruce Fowler, Tom Fowler, Ralph Humphrey and Sal Marquez.

Set List:
1. Uncle Meat (Main Theme) / Uncle Meat Variations ["Excercise 4"?]
2. Dog Breath
3. Uncle Meat (Main Theme)
4. Montana
5. Fifty-Fifty [instrumental version, not listed]

6. Mudshark
7. Farther Oblivion [listed as "Father O'Blivion"]

The track list on the album is quite wrong; the above should be correct. Track 7 is NOT "Father O'Blivion" but "Farther Oblivion", an officially unreleased number including themes from "Cucamonga" and "The Adventures of Greggary Peccary" as well as the entire "Be-Bop Tango" theme. The Mudshark and Live in Melbourne CDs have another sequencing: they flip the vinyl sides around (and get the track order 6-7-1-2-3-4-5), and the cover track list on Live in Melbourne is half wrong. The Mudshark and Tiny Nightmares covers have five superimposed pictures of Zappa playing guitar (the same picture has also been used on the Shogun Records boots Brest and Thigh); Live in Melbourne has Zappa in funny glasses, making a face.
