During the early 1900s images of women and children were a favourite subject for traditional and more modern artists alike. At this time the women’s movement was encouraging women to exercise to give them healthier bodies which would assist them in childbearing. In The holiday group Lambert depicted women taking exercise with children, an image of health and wellbeing. He contrasted one woman (Amy Lambert) — wearing the loose clothing of the maternal feminist — with the other (Thea Proctor) — wearing the more restrictive but fashionable high necked blouse and waisted coat of a career woman.
