    National Security Adviser suggested today that sanctions & protests have Iran “choked off”, will force them to negotiate. Actually, I couldn’t care less if they negotiate. Will be totally up to them but, no nuclear weapons and “don’t kill your protesters.”

    The beauty of policy is that we are in the driver’s seat, not . The pressure on regime is at extreme levels. No reason to let them off the hook while people are in the streets. It’s a shrewd tweet. Maybe they’ll call; maybe they’ll fall. All good for US.

    President’s advisers have been going around making the implausible argument that killing Soleimani will make Iran more likely to talk. Now Potus, who has said he’ll get a better nuclear deal, says he doesn’t care if they negotiate. 🤷🏼‍♂️

    In the aftermath of Soleimani’s killing, Iran and its proxies have dispensed with the fiction of their independence from one another. We certainly knew there was significant command and control. But important to see acknowledged, nonetheless.

    So far Biden is the only major Dem candidate to tweet out a statement supporting protests against the Iranian regime. Nothing in the twitter feeds of Sanders, Warren, Buttigieg, Klobuchar, despite all of them previously championing democracy promotion/antiauthoritarianism abroad.

    Trump’s reckless policies have needlessly endangered our interests in the Middle East. But none of us should be under any illusions about the Iranian regime, and the Iranian people — like all people everywhere — have the right to peaceful protest. The world should support them.

    A longstanding criticism from Iranian dissidents is that talk of negotiations with the current regime during protests legitimizes the mullahs and undermines the protestors. This is a significant statement that should embolden the Iranian people as they pour into the streets.
