Very hot in the studio these past few days. Pleased to have completed the painting, titled ‘Arrival’. I will have some exhibition news for you very soon too. Enjoy the weather and stay safe.

Keep Going
Had a bit of a frustrating day on the painting today. Now I look at it again, I’m happier. Sometimes a painting needs to have big changes to improve. Next stage will be to relocate the eye. I hope to be back in the studio to have more to show you soon.

Warming up
Had a couple of studio sessions this weekend. It’s been very warm- more like July, and the new colours added include some warmer ones: Titanium White, Zinc White, Chromium Yellow and Burnt Umber. And some intense ones: Ultramarine, Prussian Blue, Phthalo Blue.
I’ll have some exhibition news for you soon. Stay safe and thanks for reading.
Back in the Studio
Very happy to be able to be back in the studio working on a new painting this weekend. The photos show the underpainting stages: Cobalt Turquoise Light (a new addition to my palette), Winsor Lemon, Purple Lake, Prussian Blue. I hope to have some exhibition news for you soon.

Portrait Artist of the Week
For the last eight Sundays I’ve been drawing along with Sky Portrait Artist of the Week. It’s been good to have a challenge, and to draw sitters that I wouldn’t necessarily have chosen to work from.
Below is my set of drawings. There’s a full gallery on my Flickr Gallery
As restrictions ease, I’m hoping to get back to the studio more, and have more updates to show you. Keep safe and thanks for reading.

Sky Portrait Artist of the Week
Latest attempts at drawings for Sky Portrait Artist of the Week. The sitter was Noel Fielding. Chalk pastel on black paper, and ink on paper. I drew the ink version whilst the programme was on, and the pastel drawing from a screenshot as I wanted a smile. Hope that they bring you a smile.

Portrait Artist of the Week
Had another go joining in with Portrait Artist of the Week. Bit strange, I am happy yet unhappy with both of the drawings. At first I tried my usual Daily Drawings format using Pitt ink pens. Then chalk pastel on black paper. I took painter Christian Hook’s advice, and used my mistakes: I deliberately blurred a lot of the drawing, then took away areas using a wet brush. I really like the technique, but I just haven’t got a likeness – the sitter was Will Young. I’ll definitely try working this way again though.
This week is Artwalk Wakefield, and although venues cannot open, it is taking place online. I’ll be tweeting for it this Wednesday evening from 5pm, do join everyone taking part. Stay safe and thanks for reading.

Sky Portrait Artist of the Week
One of the brighter things about Lockdown is the number of new interactive art programmes that are available. I’ve been enjoying taking part in Sky Portrait Artist of the Week.
This week was (Judge) Robert Rinder, who was engagingly knowledgeable about art and humanity, and funny when talking to Gareth Reid the artist. Yet when posed he looks melancholy and a bit vulnerable- which I think came across in my drawings.
If you fancy joining in, the programme is online on the SkyTV Facebook page.
The rest of my efforts are on my Flickr gallery.
I hope you are all keeping well. Thanks for reading, and more to share soon.

Portrait Artist of the Week
No studio time or teaching drawing sessions for the foreseeable future, so I’m making the most of this resource: Portrait Artist of The Week on @skyarts. Facebook. This week the model is dancer Akram Khan. It’s quite strange to have a model this close up – yes he’s on screen but it feels like a lifedrawing session because of the movement and slight changes in lighting.
I was going to make a quick pencil crayon study, but I got too absorbed! I’m using layers of colour, the same process as my painting. The first in pencil crayon, the second in ink.
