Israel’s internal security Shin Bet has failed to present any charges against Nawajaa to date.

12 August 2020 -- Yesterday, after 13 days of interrogation and denial of access to his lawyer and family, Israeli authorities allowed Palestinian human rights defender and BDS coordinator Mahmoud Nawajaa to meet his lawyer for the first time since his late night arrest on July 30th.

9 August 2020 -- Ignoring Amnesty International’s call for his immediate and unconditional release, an Israeli military judge today extended by eight days the detention of Palestinian human rights defender and BDS coordinator Mahmoud Nawajaa for continued interrogation, according to Addameer Prisoner Support and Human Rights Association.

As Israeli authorities continue to deny Palestinian human rights defender and BDS Coordinator Mahmoud Nawajaa his right to see his lawyer, keeping him in their interrogation dungeons,  Amnesty International calls for international pressure to #FreeMahmoud and to protect BDS campaigners globally.

Amnesty International Public Statement 7 August 2020  ISRAEL/OPT: RELEASE HUMAN RIGHTS DEFENDER MAHMOUD NAWAJAA Israeli authorities must immediately and unconditionally release Palestinian human rights defender Mahmoud Nawajaa, 34, the General Coordinator of the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement (BDS) in the Occupied Palestinian Territories (OPT), Amnesty International said today. He has been detained solely for exercising his rights to freedom of expression and association and is therefore a prisoner of conscience.

On July 30, the Emilia Romagna Regional Council approved by a large majority a resolution calling on the Italian Government and the European Union to express their opposition to the Trump Plan and Israel’s annexation of occupied Palestinian territory in all forums, to intervene politically and diplomatically to prevent further international law and human rights violations, and to take concrete measures to sanction such violations.

The Palestinian Human Rights Organisations Council (PHROC) condemns the arrest of human rights defender Mahmoud Nawajaa. Last Thursday, Nawajaa was arrested from his home by the Israeli occupying forces (IOF). In violation of International Humanitarian Law, he was relocated to the Al-Jalama interrogation centre inside the 1948 territory. The PHROC calls on the international community to effectively intervene for the immediate release of Nawajaa, and to ensure that the Israeli occupying authorities are held to account for the crimes committed against Palestinians. 

Occupied Ramallah, 2 August 2020 -- Today, an Israeli military court near Jenin granted a request by the Israeli internal security service, Shin Bet, to extend by 15 days the detention of Palestinian human rights defender Mahmoud Nawajaa. No charges or evidence were shared with Nawajaa or his lawyer, assigned by Addameer-Prisoner Support and Human Rights Association.

Mahmoud Nawajaa, a prominent Palestinian human rights defender, has been dragged away from his family by Israeli occupation forces in a night raid on Thursday July 30 and is currently held in Israel’s Jalameh high-security interrogation center, denied access to lawyers. 

Activists in the UK are celebrating a victory for Palestinian rights, after Luton Town Football Club dropped German sportswear brand Puma as its supplier. “We would like to thank Luton Town FC for their constructive responses to our calls to boycott Puma, and for notifying us directly of their decision to drop the company as their kit supplier,” said Markus Keaney, spokesperson for Luton Palestine Solidarity Campaign. “We hope other clubs will follow suit and choose to stand with justice, freedom and equality.”
