About This Bibliography
Although anarchist ideas and practices have existed from earliest times, anarchism did not emerge as a distinct movement until the nineteenth century. The bulk of this bibliography consists of references to this movement, both historical and contemporary. However, given the extraordinary nature of our times, in which we have an opportunity to renew anarchism again, and to redefine radical politics in general, I thought it useful and important to cast a wider net in order to provide readers with leads to the broader knowledge that they will need for today’s anarchist struggles. So I have included references to six cousins to anarchism which share its general opposition to authority and capital, namely: council communism, the Frankfurt School, situationism, surrealism, libertarian socialism/communism, and autonomous/open marxism, as well as references to a number of special topics of relevance to rebuilding a vibrant anarchist movement. Also, I’ve included works on major revolutions and historical events, most of which contained significant anarchist currents, and a good list of reports on recent movements worldwide, many of which have strong anarchist themes. Finally, there is an extensive list of other outstanding radical (but not necessarily anarchist) works that are worthy of study.
