In this memoir, the veteran German anarcho-syndicalist recounts his years in London, working with the Yiddish-speaking anarchists there. Rocker worked during a period of “anti-alien” agitation, helping to organize the tailoring trades in a mass general strike that eliminated the sweatshop system in the UK. This stage in his life was brought to an end when the British government seized him as an “enemy alien,” detaining him for several years before deporting him. (Rocker later fled Germany as the Nazis consolidated power, ending his life in the United States where he wrote his monumental Nationalism and Culture.)
