Interesting signal from the State Department here, meeting with the Kem Sokha faction of the CNRP, which did not go along with the Sam Rainsy plan to make a highly publicized (but inevitably unsuccessful) attempt to return to the Kingdom tomorrow.

In 2017, Sri Mulyani blacklisted JP Morgan as a primary dealer of government bonds for over a year, after it published a negative report on Indonesian equities. Skepticism about the government’s own statistics is amplified by these tactics.

Pompeo keeps digging. First skips East Asia Summit, then proposes everyone come to U.S. for one-off APEC meeting. Mahathir, though hosting APEC next year, has long despised inclusion of 'non-Asian' economies in APEC and resents U.S. claims to leadership of regional institutions.

I greatly respect the insights of the experts included in this picture and discussion. Yet it is striking—and honestly disappointing—that this engagement was not more inclusive or representative of the diversity of backgrounds and perspectives in the national security community.

If they thought Esper would've been received any better, that's yet another indictment of the admin's lack of understanding of ASEAN. It's not ADMM+. Pence and Pompeo were the only acceptable fallbacks. Anyone else was a clear snub.
