'Joker' Repeats at #1, 'Addams Family' Solid in Second and 'Parasite' Feasts

'Joker' Repeats at #1, 'Addams Family' Solid in Second and 'Parasite' Feasts
In the face of three new wide releases, there was no dethroning Joker from the weekend's top spot as the film not only topped the weekend box office domestically, internationally and worldwide, it has already generated over $543 million globally in just its first twelve days in global release. As for the newcomers, UAR's The Addams Family led the way with a solid second place debut while Paramount's Gemini Man and Lionsgate's Jexi struggled to find an audience. However, one film that didn't struggle was Neon's release of the Palme d'Or winner Parasite, which made an impact in just three theaters this weekend.

‘Lost In La Mancha’ Follow-Up ‘He Dreams Of Giants’ Will Premiere At Doc NYC

‘Lost In La Mancha’ Follow-Up ‘He Dreams Of Giants’ Will Premiere At Doc NYC
In 2002, Keith Fulton and Louis Pepe released “Lost in La Mancha,” a documentary covering director Terry Gilliam‘s failed attempt at adapting “Don Quixote” as a feature-length film at the beginning of the decade. For years, it seemed the “Lost in La Mancha” would be the closest Gilliam came to making a “Don Quixote” movie, but the right combination of events – and a bankable lead – would result in “The Man Who Killed Don Quixote” in 2018.

It’s Weird That We Don’t Know What ‘Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker’ Is About

It’s Weird That We Don’t Know What ‘Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker’ Is About
When I watched that “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” sizzle reel back in August, I was surprised by the reminder that “Episode IX” will be the end of the main series of “Star Wars” movies. Not because it’s news to me, but because nothing about this feels like the end — and certainly not like the culmination of a grand story told over the past 42 years.

How could it? You’d be hard pressed to find anything in the first two entries in this new trilogy that moves things toward some big finale. And frankly, it’s impossible to watch the previous eight numbered “Star Wars” movies and think, “Yes, the next one is the end of the story” without being told it is. You’d simply never come to that conclusion on your own.

Here’s what we know about “Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker.

‘Parasite’ Sets Foreign Language Record at Indie Box Office
After becoming the first Korean film to win the Palme D’Or at Cannes, Bong Joon-Ho’s “Parasite” has set several new records at the indie box office, including the largest per screen average for any foreign language film.

With approximately $376,274 grossed and a per screen average of $125,421, “Parasite” has also earned the largest average for any film in the last three years. To find a higher average, you have to go back to the release of “La La Land” in December 2016, where it earned a $176,000 average from a five screen release. “Parasite” now ranks as the 18th highest per screen average of all time and 8th highest per screen average for all live action films.

Los Angeles Kings Cover Taylor Swift’s Staples Center Banner Due to ‘Curse’

The Los Angeles Kings will tarp over a banner recognizing Taylor Swift’s Staples Center sellout streak after fans of the hockey team blamed the banner for putting a “curse” on the Kings.

The “Taylor Swift Curse” at the Staples Center dates back to the 2015-2016 season, a year after the Kings won two Stanley Cups in a three-season span. With the team struggling, Kings fans made Swift the de facto scapegoat, blaming the presence of the banner – raised in August 2015 – for the team’s downfall.

Since the banner went up,

‘Joker’ Remains Box Office Ruler With $55 Million

‘Joker’ Remains Box Office Ruler With $55 Million
Joaquin Phoenix is king of the North American box office once again as “Joker” scores an easy victory in its second weekend with $55 million at 4,374 sites.

“Joker” dominated a trio of new entries with animated comedy “The Addams Family” leading the rest of pack with $30.3 million at 4,007 venues, topping forecasts. Will Smith’s “Gemini Man” wound up under expectations with $20.5 million at 3,642 locations. Adam DeVine’s artificial intelligence comedy “Jexi” generated little interest with $3.1 million at 2,332 screens.

“Joker” showed plenty of traction, declining only 43% from its impressive opening of $96.2 million, the fifth-largest domestic launch of 2019 despite worries about the negative impact of the film’s darker themes. Moviegoers have stayed strongly engaged with a 10-day total of more than $192 million.

The psychological thriller has already become hugely profitable for Warner Bros., which partnered with Village Roadshow and Bron on the $55 million project. And with a solid international performance of $351 million,

‘Joker’ Posts Strong $55 Million Box Office Weekend While ‘Gemini Man’ Struggles

  • The Wrap
Warner Bros.’ “Joker” cannot be stopped at the box office. In its second weekend, the Village Roadshow/DC tragic drama will post a $55 million total, giving it a 10-day domestic total of $192.7 million.

It’s a remarkable hold for this R-Rated comic book movie, especially considering its bleak tone. But that hasn’t stopped casual moviegoers and hardcore comic book fans alike from embracing Joaquin Phoenix’s take on the Joker, as strong word of mouth from the film’s release is putting it on pace to pass “It: Chapter Two” as WB’s highest grossing 2019 release this coming week.

Camila Cabello made a dramatic Saturday Night Live debut as musical guest, accompanying first-time host David Harbour of Stranger Things.

For her first performance, Cabello delivered a fierce rendition of her recent single “Cry For Me.” Clad in a Marie Antoinette getup, she wielded her power over her court as she sang about the depths of love.

Cabello later returned to the stage sans costumes as she belted out her striking single “Easy.” With her band obscured in the background, she still gave a theatrical performance with the focus on

David Harbour on ‘SNL’: 3 Sketches You Have to See
Ending its initial three-week run, Saturday Night Live closed with another strong episode that solidified this as one of the most promising seasons in several years. While more front-loaded than the first two episodes, this David Harbour-led installment reinforced its early patterns: celebrity-centric cold opens, a heaping help of Kate McKinnon, and plenty of space for the show’s newest cast members to stretch their legs. Bowen Yang and Chloe Fineman both got far more screen time than SNL stalwarts such as Kenan Thompson and Mikey Day this week,

‘Succession’ Stars Nicholas Braun, Matthew Macfadyen Break Down How To Make a Tomelette

‘Succession’ Stars Nicholas Braun, Matthew Macfadyen Break Down How To Make a Tomelette
You can’t make a Tomelette without breaking some Greggs, and you can’t get through an episode of ‘Succession’ without a few rounds of riffing, at least according to Nicholas Braun (who plays Greg Hirsch) and Matthew Macfadyen (who portrays Tom Wamsgans).

“We basically improv in probably every scene to some capacity,” says Braun. Though the majority of the scenes are written to a T, the actors also get “freebies” where they are given creative freedom and allowed to veer off in a direction that feels right. Macfadyen says when he rewatches episodes months later, he “can never remember

Watch ‘SNL’ Spoof ‘Joker’ With Oscar the Grouch Origin Story
Saturday Night Live spoofed Joker with an Oscar the Grouch origin story that puts Sesame Street in the cold heart of Gotham City.

In the video short, SNL guest host David Harbour plays a garbage man named Oscar who becomes disillusioned with the condition of Sesame Street, where Big Bird is a peepshow dancer and Ernie is stabbed after refusing to give up his rubber ducky.

Like Joaquin Phoenix’s troubled villain-in-the-making, Harbour’s Oscar seeks psychiatric help to slow his descent. “If everyone calls you trash, if everyone treats you like trash,

Bertrand Tavernier on Coppola, Scorsese, Cayatte, Cinema’s Bright Future

Bertrand Tavernier on Coppola, Scorsese, Cayatte, Cinema’s Bright Future
Veteran French director Bertrand Tavernier (“Round Midnight”) – president and director of the Institut Lumière and Lumière Festival, which he co-manages with Cannes’ Thierry Frémaux – has played a pivotal role in restoring classic French films and defending the importance of French directors, such as Claude Autant Lara, Henri Decoin and André Cayatte, who were attacked by the film critics of the Nouvelle Vague.

He says his aim is to strike a new view of this period of French film history, citing the example of Francis Ford Coppola who praised and rehabilitated British filmmakers such as Michael Powell, similarly written off by some critics.

In 2016 Tavernier released his feature documentary “My Journey Through French Cinema,” and follow-up 8-episode TV series released in 2018, both of which are inspired by Martin Scorsese’s personal documentaries on American and Italian cinema.

Guests of this year’s 10th Lumiere Festival include Coppola, who receives a retrospective,
