![]() Jagger's only possible competition for Greatest Frontman is Iggy. As John Doe said - the Stones are the greatest example of everything to do - & not to do - in Rock'n'Roll. Or something like that. |

Did you hear there's a new Stones album coming out in December - all old blues covers! www.rollingstone.com... |
![]() |
![]() I like hearing this with foreign lyrics, gives new perspective. |
![]() |
![]() @Tim, yes, someone mentioned that to me on FB when I announced the show, but that was the first I'd heard of it ... sounds potential-y |
![]() |
Wed. 10/12/16 7:24pm
tim abdellah:
Yes - potential-y!! |
Wed. 10/12/16 7:25pm
Dean:
You know what's kinda weird, I've been viewing lately random Stones YouTube clips, interviews, old shows, etc. Last night I dug into some recent appearances with Mick Taylor and later shows by his own band. I've never been a huge Stones fan. Got a handful of records, never saw them live. But wanted to investigate the legacy. And now this.
![]() |

![]() |
Wed. 10/12/16 7:27pm
ndbob:
I kind of lost interest in the Stones after 1970 |
![]() |
![]() I saw Mick Taylor sometime around 1983 or so, with his own blues band. Closest I've been to seeing the Stones, and it was great (and LOUD). |

"You can't always get what you want" should be someone's election campaign song! That is if the Rolling Stones would allow it.

@ndb there's some pretty killer stuff after 1970. but after 1980 it gets pretty sparse. |

The first Stones record I knew was "Heart of Stone" because my sister had it |

i think Some Girls is *not* a classic. but it's ok. |
![]() |
Wed. 10/12/16 7:31pm
geezerette:
@Jill B: Hilarious idea! They could both use it. :) |
Wed. 10/12/16 7:31pm
Dean:
My first was Sticky Fingers w/ zipper mid-'70s, then Goat's Head Soup, Exile much later, and even later Let It Bleed.
![]() |
Wed. 10/12/16 7:32pm
glenn:
some girls is definitely the last good stones album, and easily in their top 5, maybe even top 3. |
![]() |
Wed. 10/12/16 7:32pm

#hyde Yep I mean I like parts of Exile on Main Street, Goats Head Soup etc, but the 60s Stones music is my fave |

Wed. 10/12/16 7:33pm

Some Girls appeared when I was selling records in a record store. By definition I am not fond of any record I had to sell.
![]() |
Wed. 10/12/16 7:35pm
geezerette:
I like a lot of their records and "Some Girls" is one of my favorites. No idea why! |
![]() |
Wed. 10/12/16 7:35pm
hyde:
personally, i've always felt that the Beggar's Banquet-Let It Bleed-Sticky Fingers-Exile on Main Street lineup is the greatest 4 album run of any rock band ever |
Wed. 10/12/16 7:36pm
Dean:
Surely The Residents' take on same?
![]() |
Wed. 10/12/16 7:36pm
ndbob:
really hard to choose for me - anything from the rolling stones now through flowers |
![]() |
Wed. 10/12/16 7:38pm
geezerette:
Yeah! That initial riff! Then the wheels all come off. |
![]() |
Wed. 10/12/16 7:38pm
tim abdellah:
I'm a fan of Some Girls, too. Objectively, I know it's not up there with the albums Hyde listed. But it gives me a huge grin from start to finish. |
![]() |
![]() I have to admit I didn't explore thoroughly beyond the Hot Rocks collection I bought in 9th grade. |
![]() |
Wed. 10/12/16 7:39pm
ndbob:
maybe it's a reflection of being a little older - Satisfaction was seventh grade for me |
![]() |
![]() I can still listen to Some Girls, which is saying a lot for me - as opposed to most of the albums of my youth, which I just don't feel anymore, even if objectively I know they're great ... maybe overplayed? |
![]() |
Wed. 10/12/16 7:40pm
ndbob:
hmm actually eighth |
![]() |
![]() Greetings Gary and Bodegatrons i expect complete satisfaction. |
![]() |
![]() Didn't you know you can't always get what you want, coel? |
![]() |
![]() I'm takin' requests! Dean, did you want to hear the Residents? |
![]() |
Wed. 10/12/16 7:43pm
geezerette:
@Tim: I love "Far Away Eyes". Lyrics so funny, music western as tumbleweeds. |
![]() |
Wed. 10/12/16 7:44pm
ndbob:
@Gary are you going to play Marianne Faithful's "Sister Morphine"? |
Wed. 10/12/16 7:44pm
Dean:
Well, yes, indeed, especially if you're going to spin a series of "Satisfaction." And then I'll stop calling you Shirley.
![]() |
Wed. 10/12/16 7:45pm
geezerette:
They're so damn snotty. Hard attitude to maintain for 6 decades! |
![]() |
Wed. 10/12/16 7:45pm
Parq:
"Satisfaction" was a mandatory set-list item for any self-respecting garage band in the 1970s. |
![]() |
![]() @Dean, will do - Bob, I can play it, yes, but it would be next set, and you'll be gone :( |
![]() |
![]() Suspect Träd Gräs och Stenar's version here might be influenced by Blue Cheer's. |
![]() |
Wed. 10/12/16 7:46pm
hyde:
i feel like i should say that i *do* like Some Girls! i have a great extended disco mix of "Miss You" that is killer. but it's kind of a slow decline for me after Goat's Head Soup, imo. |
![]() |
![]() @Parq, there were SO many garage versions to choose from, I opted for this instead, which - yes, RevRab, totally Blue Cheer |
![]() |
Wed. 10/12/16 7:46pm
ndbob:
aww ok Gary - I figured that - it's great |
![]() |
Wed. 10/12/16 7:47pm
tim abdellah:
@gezerette - yes! @Gary - from the Maghrebi side: Orchestre National de Barbes did a pretty cool mashup of Sympathy for the Devil with the Gnawa song Sa'di bil wali jani! And there's the Master Musicians of Jajouka's song "Brian Jones" |
![]() |
Wed. 10/12/16 7:48pm
ndbob:
the Brian Jones bio that came out a couple years ago is really good |
![]() |
![]() I tended to veer away from the more popular choices (e.g., Devo), but I would rather play things y'all wanna hear ... and WHOA, Tim! I do have a Moroccan / UK version, but not either of those ... um ... do you want to send for possible playage? Or point me to a URL? |
![]() |
Wed. 10/12/16 7:49pm
geezerette:
Brian Jones was so sophisticated. |
Wed. 10/12/16 7:49pm
Dean:
Mick Jagger was so vain.
![]() |
![]() Him Brian Jones. Him Rolling Stone. Him Brian Jones. Him really stoned. |

![]() i scrolled up a bit and fully agree with hyde @ 7:35, except i add "between the buttons" to that lineup. |
Wed. 10/12/16 8:00pm
Dean:
I've been toying with picking up the official issue of the '75 tour in Los Angeles. I remember a high school friend having had the good fortune to go to one of those shows. She gave a glowing review.
![]() |
Wed. 10/12/16 8:01pm
tim abdellah:
They played at Oakland Coliseum or Candelstick in '81 or '82 - Tattoo You was the new album then. |
![]() |
Wed. 10/12/16 8:01pm
hyde:
yes, Steel Wheels! that was their big 80's comeback record because it was supposedly back to the roots. but it's a pretty tepid affair. |
![]() |
Wed. 10/12/16 8:01pm
geezerette:
Some Girls album. "Emotional Rescue" '80 Married to Jeff Koons. |

& Hi back! |
![]() |
![]() Tusalava! I had no idea they split! |
![]() |
![]() Tim! Yes, that sounds right -- did you go to that, too? |
![]() |
![]() i missed everything said because of bullshit going on here, but i never considered any connection between Liz Phair and the rolling stones. (i guess i have to back upo & listen to the mic break?) |
![]() |
Wed. 10/12/16 8:08pm
geezerette:
This Liz Phair song is so funny! |
![]() |
![]() Coelacanth, this whole album, Exile in Guyville, is a track-by-track (sort of? loosely?) response to Exile on Main Street |
![]() |
Wed. 10/12/16 8:09pm
tim abdellah:
Nah, wasn't hip enough or old enough :) I did see the reformed King Crimson there in '81, which was awesome. |
Wed. 10/12/16 8:10pm
Dean:
I *was* old enough to catch Television in Hollywood, but I didn't. Dumb.
![]() |
![]() Holy Shit, Really?! i listened to this album hundreds of times in the 90s and i never knew that Gary. i have to listen to it again soon ...with new ears! |
![]() |
![]() That's pretty cool, tho |
![]() |
Wed. 10/12/16 8:12pm
hyde:
@tim i saw that King Crimson bunch at UMass right around then too! |
![]() |
Wed. 10/12/16 8:13pm
geezerette:
Slim Harpo's version probably the original. |
![]() |
![]() @Geezerette, yes, it is |
![]() |
Wed. 10/12/16 8:14pm
hyde:
@geezerette yeah, he wrote it |

tim abdellah:
@hyde - Elephant Talk!! So great. |
![]() |

tim abdellah:
This is a nice "Tumblin' Dice"! |
![]() |
Wed. 10/12/16 8:16pm
hyde:
i saw Johnny Copeland when i was at UMass too ;) |
![]() |
![]() i just took exile on main st. out of my cassette player in my car today, after a few weeks. i didn't put it away though; just on the seat. ...i actually never liked exile that much, except most of side 1 and part of side 2. -always thought it was crazy overrated. |
![]() |
![]() This next track might be my pick for "most soulful" rendering of any Stones song. I know I will get shouted down for saying that, but I'm throwin it out there |
Wed. 10/12/16 8:18pm
Dean:
Just learned Specs, owner of eponymous North Beach bar, died this morning.
![]() |
![]() OMG, I remember that place, Dean! |
![]() |
Wed. 10/12/16 8:19pm
hyde:
@Gary it's pretty soulful, no denyin'. but there is that Otis Redding "Satisfaction"... |
![]() |
![]() I know, I know |
Wed. 10/12/16 8:20pm
Dean:
Yeah, kinda unforgettable, and while I haven't been there in years, I'm pretty sure it remained as ragged as ever.
![]() |
![]() didn't Merry Clayton (the original singer on let it bleed) do a version of this? |
Wed. 10/12/16 8:21pm
Dean:
Well, "remains," since the bar is still there.
![]() |
Wed. 10/12/16 8:22pm

@Gary @Hyde:Thnx, love Slim Harpo. Gary that was a great version!! (Maxayn) |

![]() |
![]() That's what I'm here for! |
![]() |
Wed. 10/12/16 8:30pm
hyde:
oh, i always have dug this BJM tune |
![]() |
![]() Me too -- I think I might have first heard it in the movie |
![]() |
Wed. 10/12/16 8:31pm
hyde:
yep. i like that movie, too. |
Wed. 10/12/16 8:31pm
Dean:
I think it's "Anemone," but I like the mash-up of "anemone," "anonymous," and "an enemy" in the typo.
Wed. 10/12/16 8:32pm
Dean:
Joycian | |
![]() |
![]() Oops! Made the fix ... DIG was the first time I heard either band |
![]() |
Wed. 10/12/16 8:33pm
geezerette:
haha,:) Sharp-eyed Dean. |
![]() |
Wed. 10/12/16 8:34pm
hyde:
@Gary me too, mostly. And BJM really was the only band worth hearing of those two, for my money |
![]() |
Wed. 10/12/16 8:36pm
hyde:
"anenome" seems like it should be a real word, sort of like metonym |
![]() |
![]() It does, hyde. I love that song. |
![]() |
Wed. 10/12/16 8:38pm
hyde:
also, when it comes to the Brian Jonestown Massacre, i think that Take It from the Man! is their best record. it's very Stones-y. |
![]() |
![]() Albini is a great producer; and kind of a prick. |
Wed. 10/12/16 8:40pm
Dean:
I donated to the cause last week, wish I could do the same this week and for this show, in particular. You have been on a roll these past few weeks. (Looking at you, tim abdellah.)
![]() |
Wed. 10/12/16 8:41pm
hyde:
@coel yep. and i have to say that the Big Black shows i saw in the 80's were about as good as shows got. |
Wed. 10/12/16 8:41pm
Dean:
Flamin' Groovies do a respectable version of this tune. Totally forgot about it until just now.
![]() |
Wed. 10/12/16 8:43pm
geezerette:
hahahaaaa, mein gott! |
![]() |
![]() Thank you, Dean! |
Wed. 10/12/16 8:44pm
Dean:
Heh, my wife's colleague at work, singing just now.
![]() |
Wed. 10/12/16 8:45pm
tim abdellah:
@Dean - thanks! Glad to be part of it. |
![]() |
Wed. 10/12/16 8:46pm
tim abdellah:
Wow - another live 1978 in San Francisco stones cover! |
![]() |
![]() Probably everyone knows the story that The Verve's big hit 'Bittersweet Symphony' sampled the symphonic version of 'The Last Time' - w/out permission - & they got sued for every penny on it. |
![]() |
![]() I do not know that story, RevRab |
![]() |
Wed. 10/12/16 8:50pm
geezerette:
Didn't know, thnx RevRab. |

Wed. 10/12/16 8:59pm
tim abdellah:
Oh, I just noticed that was an Arabic version. Will have to go back and listen again - attention at work is hit and miss... :( |
![]() |
![]() I think even Moroccan Arabic, Tim! The singer is half-Moroccan, half-French |
![]() |
Wed. 10/12/16 9:00pm
geezerette:
RR: s that based on Sutcliff's girlfriend? |
![]() |
![]() absolutely not true. the verve DID get permission and got sued anyway. |
![]() |
![]() Oh! Interesting. |
![]() |
Wed. 10/12/16 9:01pm
tim abdellah:
Wow. It sounded German to me when it first came on, so I didn't pay so much attention! |
![]() |
![]() @geezerette: God question - maybe obliquely? |
![]() |

![]() supposedly they used "more than what they paid for"...which is a bit of a (not funny) joke, since it's not even that obviously derivative. ...and after all, the 'stones really needed the money... |
![]() |
![]() Yeah - Guy Peellaert is the artist who did the 'It's Only Rock'n'Roll' album cover...IS 'Time Waits for No One' on there? @coelacanth: Seriously. |

Dean:
Evidently there was permission for sampling after Allen Klein negotiated full rights to the Verve song for, well, a song.
![]() |
![]() actually, (not that i don't think jagger is an asshole anyway) -to be fair, Jagger/Richard may not have had anything to do with it. -in fact, scumbag alan klein may have had total control of that decision. |
![]() |
![]() hey Gary... just got in, glad to catch some of the show! |
![]() |
![]() Steve! |
![]() |
![]() oh, Dean i didn't know that - though i did read that the verve doesn't get a penny in royalties for that song. |
Wed. 10/12/16 9:11pm
Dean:
Right, coelacanth. Suits ensued among the various parties--Klein, Andrew Loog Oldham, etc.--but it isn't clear to me that the Stones ever sued.
Wed. 10/12/16 9:12pm
Dean:
It is, apparently, Klein's song, by now his estate's.
![]() |
![]() I remember the Flowers album, which was an Allen Klein thingy, attributed Stevie Wonder's song to Jagger/Richards, etc. ... and being confused |
![]() |
![]() Keef (again) re Klein: ...'The price of an education'... |
![]() |
![]() -in my perfect world, no one ever would own the rights to anyone else's art. |
![]() |
![]() alan klein:"Bill, why don't you like me?" Bill Wyman:"because i don't trust you, Alan." ...too bad the others didn't listen to Bill. |

Jill B.:
Wow, all the different interpretations of the Stone's! Takes me to the way back world of young Gary. What a fine time it was indeed! Signing off so I can finish up with dinner preparations.
![]() |
![]() Bon apetite, Mom! I will call you this weekend, I promise -- I've been meaning to for a while now! |

Dean:
I don't want to instill guilt, Gary, but I CALL MY MOTHER EVERY SINGLE DAY. Then again, I don't have a radio show, archived no less, that she can tune into.

geezerette:
If anyone here hasn't seen,"Rolling Stone's Rock & Roll Circus",(unlikely!)I wholeheartedly recommend it. |
![]() |
![]() My mom wouldn't like it if I called her every day. Or even every other day. She'd rather text. |
![]() |
![]() I haven't seen Rock & Roll Circus yet |
![]() |
![]() I don't call anyone every day. |
![]() |
Wed. 10/12/16 9:24pm
hyde:
oh, Rock and Roll Circus is totally worth a watch |
Wed. 10/12/16 9:26pm
Dean:
It has reached the point where my mom gets a little confused if I don't call, even if I call later than usual. I have tried to engage technology to improve(?) the situation -- let her see the kids, for instance -- but it ain't gonna happen. My mom watches Rock and Roll Circus EVERY SINGLE DAY.
![]() |
![]() Is this the 1979 or 1969 version ... anyone? |

@Gary i feel like this is the later (1979) version, but i'm not totally confident in that assessment |

northguineahills:
The only people I talk to on the phone (for personal reasons) are my parents, and occasionally my parents. Some female friends do prefer the voice, but I hate talking on the phone. |
![]() |
![]() my mother would definitely not want me to call more than once/week. (which i don't even come close to) ...and i go a week at a time without even using my phone! |
![]() |
![]() I think you're right, Hyde - sounds more late 70s than late 60s to me |
![]() |
![]() (i don't text) |
![]() |
![]() it "sounded" 1979. |

"if you don't like that song, now is the time to leave" is pretty much noncommercial radio at its apex |

Rock and Roll Circus is amazing, and the DVD is worthwhile for the interviews and commentary, if you like that sort of thing. Marianne Faithful's commentary, as I recall, was pretty awesome. |
![]() |
![]() I super love the DVD extras |
![]() |
Wed. 10/12/16 9:42pm
geezerette:
@tim: Agree! I put a link above to entire, though segmented, show on youtube. Fascinating window. :) No commentary that way though. |

geezerette:
@Gary: Yes! That's optimal! |
![]() |
![]() I'm going to try to end on a high note, music-wise, and a final appeal for a pledge or two to keep the music flowing [face with big grin and appealing-to-your-heart-strings eyes] |

I guess I’m a little late with my requests, but for next time: Ace Frehley’s version of “2000 Man”, the Blind Boys of Alabama’s “Just Wanna See His Face,” Bryan Ferry’s “Sympathy for the Devil,” Ramblin’ Jack Elliot’s “Connection” (from the Stones’ “Between the Buttons”) and finish out with the “Frampton Comes Alive” version of “Jumping Jack Flash.” |
