One of the best Ethiopian restaurants I've been to was in South Orange, NJ. I was there for work, and had an hour to kill before the next train came to take me back to the city. Two blocks from the train station, was the best Ethiopian restaurant I had the pleasure of eating at outside of Adams Morgan, DC. |
![]() |
![]() I was just about to settle in with my new Upper Volta box set when, hey, it's all happening live. Here and Now. |
![]() |
![]() Stanley! Is that the Numero Group set? |
![]() |
![]() I can't remember the best Ethiopian resto I've been to, but it was probably in Adams Morgan |
![]() |
![]() @Gary: it is, indeed. Bobo Yeye - La Belle Epoque |
![]() |
![]() That's a freaking great collection! |

Where do you go for Ethiopian food in NYC? I've never been to one that matched my own DC experience. (And yay Gary!) |
![]() |
![]() There was a great place in Brookyln, David, but I can't remember now exactly where it was ... Fort Greene, maybe? |
![]() |
![]() @Gary: Just cracked the seal this evening but it'll have to wait. I remember buying a few of these Éthiopiques CDs back then. Mahmoud Ahmed comes to mind. Mustn't go check as my partner is asleep in the bedroom. |

I'm a light sleeper, but my wife is a very heavy sleeper. I'd come home w/ friends while she was asleep, put on Merzbow or Richie Hawtin on full volume, and she'd have no clue the next morning. (wish I could sleep like that). |
![]() |
![]() Talk of Ethiopian food reminds me that I want to try making my own injera with teff flour. I've just started experimenting with gluten-free sourdoughs. |

That there's Amharic script. I tried to teach myself Amharic, oh, thirty years ago. Lasted about a week.
![]() |
![]() Dean! It's a syllabary, like Hindi, yeah? Seems like, but not sure |
Wed. 10/25/17 6:09pm
Dean:
You are correct, but it's not like I remembered even that fundamental characteristic!

Funny how that sounds like a banjo, or versa. |
![]() |
![]() What is the meaning of "Mèla Mèla"? |
![]() |
![]() Hi Artie! Maybe "peace"? I actually looked it up but can't remember now |
![]() |
![]() The sound of it repeated in song was just so hypnotic. My mind was filling in "phenom-e-non" until I looked up to see the song title. |
![]() |
![]() Heh ... I was looking around to see what I could find about it ... might not actually be a Girma Bèyènè song ... |

![]() |
![]() Hyde! Yeah, right -- gotta go get some water now, come to think of it -- Thanks, James! |
![]() |
![]() "Mèla Mèla" probably does *not* mean peace, now that I'm thinking about it. |
![]() |
![]() This kind of reminds me of an old-time folk tune or hymn. |
![]() |
![]() Totally |
![]() |
![]() But longer and hypnotic. |

Got to the store and am back home. I've spoiled my neighbors cat, and he now greets me at my front door when I get home for belly rubs. He seems to like anchovy oil. |

@ngh aint that just like a cat |
![]() |
Wed. 10/25/17 8:29pm
hyde:
my cat story today goes like this: i've been in this pace a couple months, the cat here is nice and i feed him sometimes. he's gotten pretty friendly. last night, for the first time, i came home and he was asleep on my bed. aww, that's so cute, i thought. today i came home, and he had puked on my bed. sigh. |
![]() |
Wed. 10/25/17 8:29pm
tim abdellah:
That last track was cookin'! |
![]() |
![]() Think of it as a present |

@hyde - LOL! |
![]() |
Wed. 10/25/17 8:31pm
northguineahills:
The only good cat I had w/ me had to go b/c of the new landlord, so my roommate who was moving out got him, I still got visitation rights. I've lost a few keyboards to a certain roommate's cat who liked to puke on it. |
![]() |
![]() For some weird reason, my cat never pukes. Not even hairballs. Not one hairball in like 3 years |
![]() |
Wed. 10/25/17 8:44pm
hyde:
@Gary wow, that's a good cat. just about every cat i've ever had has been some kind of pukebucket. |
![]() |
![]() Ezra's an anomaly |
![]() |
![]() well i might as well join this conversation: the one flaw of one of my two cats is that she will eat until she throws up... i have to let her eat for 2-3 minutes then go over and pet her and slow her down. i don't understand how she could not have learned not to do this by now, just for her own sake. |
![]() |
![]() I hate to laugh at that image, but it cracks me up for some reason. Good for you for intervening, Steve! |
![]() |
![]() haha shes such a sweet innocent well meaning creature its almost funny how stupid it is |
![]() |
Wed. 10/25/17 8:51pm
hyde:
@steve ha. somehow that sort of thing does not surprise me. |
![]() |
![]() What?! What!!! What?!? i'vw missed 4 hours of ethiopian music?!! |
![]() |
![]() crap! crap. |
![]() |

![]() ......hi Gary and all |

![]() |
![]() Gary do you have any nyc Ethiopian food recs? |
![]() |
![]() Happy Seriesing, Tim! |
![]() |
![]() It's been a long time since I've had any in New York, but I remember there was this great place in Brooklyn ... I'll try and Yelp it in a moment ... |
![]() |
![]() howdy hyde! |
![]() |
![]() there used to be very good ethiopian places on the upper west side, but i'm talking decades ago. i'm totally out of touch with nyc now, even though i work within 45 minutes of it. |
![]() |
![]() theres apparently a newish vegan ethiopian place somewhere in brooklyn, im curious how authentic that is. |
![]() |
![]() www.yelp.com... |
![]() |
Wed. 10/25/17 9:14pm
northguineahills:
There's a decent place at MacDougal St & Minetta Ln in the Village. |
![]() |
![]() thanks Gary! |
![]() |
![]() Bunna Cafe is the vegan place. I think the place I went to was Ghenet |
![]() |
![]() ok i just realized i went to Ghenet years ago... yeah it was really good! |
![]() |
Wed. 10/25/17 9:18pm
northguineahills:
I think it was called Meskerem. It's where I went when Addis came calling. It's not Adams Morgan good, but still plenty good. |
![]() |
![]() I think I've been to Meskerem, NGH, but years ago |
![]() |
![]() oh right yep that place is still there ngh, i work two blocks away... its so small on the outside and half underground i forget its even there. i did like it when i last ate there probably 5+ years ago. |
![]() |
![]() this psyches me up. i'm a few electrical connections away from being able to listen to my (non-computer file) music collection again. if i stay up late i can listen to my Aster Aweke tapes tonight! |
![]() |
![]() there are dj premiums and albums i won last marathon that i've never even listened to, because of technical difficulties. |
![]() |
![]() Y ... you got Aster Aweke t-t-tapes, C? |
![]() |
Wed. 10/25/17 9:30pm
hyde:
@coel go for it! i miss my analog setup. hoping to get mine back up soon too. |
![]() |
![]() ...yeah, my volume control on my receiver would suddenly turn itself up - all the way! so i jammed a hunk of wood in there at 1/2 way up and only listen to sources that have their own output control. i still cannot afford to have it fixed, but i suddenly realized i could use my emergency back up amp if i ran the speaker wires through junction box, which i already owned. i just had to buy some rca connectors - which i just got in the mail. (so i have 2 amplifiers, hooked up to different components) |
![]() |
![]() Gary, just her first 2 albums. (direct from shanachie, back in the day) |
![]() |
![]() Larry's up in 20 mins with Windy City People and Chitown Hustlers on Testify!: wfmu.org... |
![]() |
![]() Ohhhh yay! I get to catch a bit of this tonight! |
![]() |
![]() Been digging this show, but have not had a chance to comment until now! I'll have to hit the archive later for the parts I've missed. |
