I had to Google Upper Hutt. I figured it had nothing to do with a certain Tatooine-based gangster....

evening Gary , James, everyone!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/9/15 7:02pm Gary:

LOL, well if it's any consolation, I had to Google Tatooine

Gary, George Lucas jacked the name from the Berber-influenced city of Tataouine, Tunisia. If anyone on FMU has something from that region in their music collection, my money's on it being you!
  Wed. 9/9/15 7:07pm spodiodi:

Howdy, Gary!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 🎃 Wed. 9/9/15 7:08pm listener james from westwood:

@Tusalava: I've got a wee one less than a block away, opened to serve to our growing population of Mexican and other Central American folk. It's ridiculously convenient.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/9/15 7:09pm Gary:

Aha ... well, I would have to dig around and do a bit of research ... I don't have a lot of Tunisian music, and I'm not sure where in Tunisia it's from ... Rob's a better bet!

Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/9/15 7:25pm Gary:

It's very likely /rupture played them b/c their name and the album title popped up when I started to plug it in the playlist. That man is a superhero, speaking of

I really don't like domestic hip hop much - but I do like a fair amount of global hip hop
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/9/15 7:28pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- kinda the same for me ndbob; the way it gives a voice to the underclass all over the world is really something.

There's probably a good (and likely multivolume) book waiting to be written about how hip-hip went global. If it hasn't already been written.

In theory ... howdy, Dean!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/9/15 7:44pm Mayuko:

@james I have a mixed feeling about Japanese hip hop so I kinda hope the book wouldn't spend too many pages on it. I don't know much at all but Mongolian hip-hop seems to be doing more interesting things. I once heard them mix it with throat singing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/9/15 7:47pm Gary:

We'll be hearing at least one track from Japan tonight, Mayuko ...
Avatar Wed. 9/9/15 7:48pm northguineahills:

@James: /rupture is in the middle of sabbatical from WFMU to write a book on global club culture, w/ an emphasis on hiphop, it should be out in a year or two. I also believe David Thompkins did a book on global hiphop 10 years ago.
Avatar Wed. 9/9/15 7:48pm ndbob:

@Mayuko sounds interesting!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/9/15 7:51pm Mayuko:

Have a great night, Bob!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/9/15 8:02pm Mayuko:

haha! well I'm curious to know what people think of it anyway. It must sound very different to Japanese than to people from other countries. And I might be over-thinking and too judgmental about it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/9/15 8:02pm steve:

its pizza time... great show so far!

Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/9/15 8:14pm Gary:

@Mayuko -- I'm curious to see if you'll like what I'm going to play from Japan. It's not anyone super-hip like 54-71, it's a fairly mainstream rapper :)
  Wed. 9/9/15 8:19pm Dean:

Thank you! And dang it, the campus music library doesn't hold it, but we have the first Norient title. I have made a purchase recommendation!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/9/15 8:21pm Mayuko:

I like this Hong Kong stuff! See, other Asians countries are doing much better job!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/9/15 8:21pm Gary:

Awesome, Dean! I seriously don't think I'm overselling it -- not if you love contemporary international pop & hip hop
Avatar Wed. 9/9/15 8:22pm carol:

This Yukka Shahin is great too
Avatar Wed. 9/9/15 8:26pm tim abdellah:

I know you played Shadia Mansour last week, but I would certainly be happy to hear more of her!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/9/15 8:27pm Gary:

Hmm ... might have to start takin requests ... I'll see what I can fit in!
Avatar Wed. 9/9/15 8:27pm northguineahills:

There is good hiphop from Japan, but the only stuff I own is instrumental Japanese hiphop on labels like 'Mo Wax and Ninja Tune.
  Wed. 9/9/15 8:30pm spodiodi:

I'd like to hear some Vatican hip-hop.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 🎃 Wed. 9/9/15 8:32pm listener james from westwood:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/9/15 8:32pm Mayuko:

@northguineahills like Nujabes? did he have something from ninja tune?
Avatar Wed. 9/9/15 8:32pm hyde:

i love this! i think palestinian hip hop is my jam. or one of my jams anyway
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/9/15 8:33pm Gary:

How about we go for another hour and a half, just for you, Hyde?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/9/15 8:35pm Gary:

Then this is the book for you, Carol -- I just picked it up a week or so ago myself: www.amazon.com...
Avatar Wed. 9/9/15 8:35pm northguineahills:

@Mayuko: I'd have to dig through my vinyl collection. It's been a few years since I've listened to them. (It took me 8 years to listen to my vinyl collection the last time I did so in alphabetical order).
Avatar Wed. 9/9/15 8:37pm hyde:

@ngh that is amazing
Avatar Wed. 9/9/15 8:37pm carol:

  Wed. 9/9/15 8:37pm spodiodi:

northguineahills: impressive.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/9/15 8:38pm Ike:

Hey, a mention of Sripraphai and Thailand's Center Point. I like both of them. I went back to Sripraphai recently and it was still very good, but I like Khao Kang even better.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/9/15 8:41pm Mayuko:

@northguineahills I'm absolutely ignorant about J hip-hop because the stuff from the mainstream I heard were just awful to me and been staying away from the entire genre. but there must be good stuff if it's instrumental! Let me know when you spend the next 8+ years with your collection and find your favs out!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/9/15 8:43pm Gary:

Mayuko, do you like Rip Slyme? 54-71? Dragon Ash?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/9/15 8:44pm Gary:

Ike!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/9/15 8:45pm Mayuko:

nooooo, no Dragon Ash! Nor Rip Slyme. I don't know 54-71 so that would be cool! haha!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/9/15 8:45pm Gary:

OMG, I have to play you 54-71 now!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/9/15 8:49pm Mayuko:

oh, this is actually interesting. he's not just a copy cat. phew!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/9/15 8:50pm Gary:

LOL ... maybe I will now NOT play the mainstream rapper I was gonna play :)
Avatar Wed. 9/9/15 8:50pm northguineahills:

@Mauko: I'll get back to you, I still like that music but's it's been a while since I djed it, the names will come back to me soon. I'm not even including my favorite avant turntablilists Otomo Yoshihide & Toshio Kajiwara.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/9/15 8:50pm Mayuko:

I thought I could only survive Schadarapa.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/9/15 8:56pm Mayuko:

I should go look into 54-71 some more. It was actually very interesting. Thank you Gary, to release me from my traumatic experiences of J-hiphop!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/9/15 8:57pm Gary:

Here are all of 54-71's albums, but I don't know if they are still available for DL -- let me know if not, and I'll repost them! bodegapop.blogspot.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/9/15 8:59pm Mayuko:

Haha, the cover already tells so much about them! the DL link seems to be not working, tho.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/9/15 9:00pm Gary:

Okay, I'll have to fix it ... I'll let you know when it's back up
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/9/15 9:01pm Liz Berg:

Tim, I can't tell if that's Shadia or not, and there's nothing in the metadata saying who it is ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/9/15 9:29pm Uncle Michael:

I need a bigger subwoofer in my Escalade for tonight's show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/9/15 9:29pm Gary:
