One Hundred Trillion Times Cooler Than the Coolest of the Cool...

R.I.P. Porter Wagoner...

His music was propulsive, lurid, reflexively flash and suffused with unerring honky-tonk élan. The dissolute characters he embodied in song were mere shot glasses shy of Satan's furnace, adrift in doubt, often bereft of hope, up to their necks in melancholy...

He introduced us to Dolly Parton.

Ain't that life enough?

Wagoner was both roué and committed social activist, an artist equivalent in stature to Stravinsky, Calloway, Sherman, Rauschenberg, Polanski, and a goddamned hick, an outstanding composer, and the leader of a band (the brilliant Wagonmasters) as well-versed in the improvisational arts as AMM...

Total class.

--

(And you thought Unknown Pleasures was iconic... Above, the sleeve for Omni's 2006 Rubber Room compilation. Above that, the presciently mimetic artwork for Wagoner's 1968 RCA Victor release The Bottom of the Bottle.)

Read the Times' obit here.

--

(Above, an astounding 1973 clip of "Run That by Me One More Time" from The Porter Wagoner Show. Everyone is simultaneously louche and nimble; they're locked-in like ravenous ticks! Dig the look in Dolly's eyes as she passes the vocal back to Porter after her high harmony "wine" ad-lib... If you quickly scan the audience insert shots you can spy gossiping sisters, over-enthusiastic husbands, disapproving wives, hard-boppin' toothless cousins, a woman in a white blouse picking her nose, the whole marvelous, bloody human comedy... Buck Trent's electric banjo solo is exhilarating, ditto Don Warden's pedal steel fills, especially those staccato stabs of hillbilly VCS3 roping the ensemble into position after the improvised bits in the second and third verses. [Why couldn't those guys have been hired to replace Eno in Roxy?] And Ms. Parton? Unbelievable. I love the moment when she gives Wagoner the "clock is wrong" line - she's all business. The pre-"Jolene" Dolly was too freakin' hot for words... As for the late Porter - perfect hair, sick threads, great voice, etc.)

--

Porter Wagoner's "Rubber Room," from the wonderful 1972 RCA Victor LP What Ain't to Be Just Might Happen:

In a buildin' tall with a stone wall around
There's a rubber room
When a man sees things and hears sounds that's not there
He's headed for the rubber room

Illusions in a twisted mind to save from self-destruction
It's the rubber room
Where a man can run into the wall
Till his strength makes him fall and lie still
And wait for help in the rubber room
From his blurry vision of doom
A psycho...
In the rubber room

The man in the room right next to mine
Screams a woman's name hits the wall in vain
He's in the rubber room

I hear footsteps poundin' on the floor
God I hope they don't stop at my door
I'm in the rubber room

Now they've come to get me but they find
I'm a-screamin' pretty words tryin' to make 'em rhyme
I'm in the rubber room
A psycho...
I'm in the rubber room...

Doom doom doom
Zoom run tomb
Zoom run boom plume
Rubber room

The rubber room...

Boom doom...

* Given the vagaries of Texan pronunciation, this could either be "bomb" (reduced to "bum"), or "boom." I choose the latter, though we've faxed Mr. Wagoner's press agent in Purgatory for confirmation...

Thank Christ for Sunday (Pt. 666.7)...

A reason to rejoice: Evan called. He's arrived in Kansas! I'm so relieved... His flight took an absurdly circuitous route from Iraq: after arriving in Kuwait, the commercial jet he and his Army comrades were bundled into landed first in Romania, then Iceland, before finally touching down in New fucking Hampshire! Another layover, then a cross-country hop to Topeka, where he deplaned Wednesday afternoon. He's undergoing the standard debriefing regimen prior to the start of a month-long leave, but took time out over the weekend to visit a ten-story haunted house in Kansas City with his wife Dawn, who drove out to Fort Riley to welcome him home. His priorities are thankfully in order.

He's not wounded, and seems not to have lost his sense of humor. FUCK! I'm still so amazingly stressed by all of this. The line of fathers who've lost their daughters and sons (in all the regions scarred by this insane occupation) stretches nigh to infinity...

Fuck it. For now, for the sake of my tenuous grip on sanity, a reprieve, a celebration.

Can't wait to see him!

Harry Pussy: Microgroove, Atlanta (3 May 97)

Orcutt rang me up as HP were entering the final leg of their farewell trek. They needed material for a raft of split singles, or at least wanted recordings that could later be parsed to various labels. No prob. (Menlo Park, Klang, and De Stijl were the eventual recipients.) I'd organized a gig for the Pussies and Silver Apples anyway, so it made sense for them to take advantage of some studio time.

The Econoline pulled into Howard Avenue in Decatur around 10:00 PM. They loaded in, I set up a few mikes, got levels, shot a roll of film, then hit sync on the ADAT controller. We were done by two...

I mixed everything down the week after the Atlanta gig, sent a disc off to Miami Beach, and that was that.

Below please find the complete session, extracted directly from the original stereo master.

Attacked by Beige Polo Beach Togs...

TLASILA: Live, The Edge, Ft. Lauderdale, Florida (XS Music Fest), December 1, 1995

Newly transferred; I'd not listened to the tape in nearly twelve years...

The verdict? Complete fucking chaos.

--

The set began with a dim-witted security guard clotheslining Ben Wolcott just as he'd cradled my dad's diesel-powered leaf blower in his arms. Luckily, Ben was fairly, uhh, loose (we commonly indulged in the odd n*rc*tic vice back in the day), so the lunging buffoon's assault failed to cause grave injury. Rat had sufficient foresight to run our gear through the backline instead of the house PA; although though the club quickly pulled the plug on us, we couldn't be silenced without darkening the entire complex. (Brilliant...) My mic was lost when the manager gave us the hook, but I could still be heard shouting through the din...

So, here it is: TLASILA in transition, 30-minuten mannercreme and Vedder Vedder Bedwetter under our belts (with Prostitution Heute!, "Helen Butte" vs. Masonna Pussy Badsmell, the initial, eventually unreleased version of Where a Horse Has Been Standing and Where You Belong, and two hours of Wigmaker rough mixes in the can or in queue), veterans of two national tours and a fuckload of (frequently catastrophic) Florida gigs, but nonetheless loathed, gouged, trampled upon and given no option but to open for generic blues, boogie, industrial and metal outfits, all of whom vanished soon after...

Perfection!

From the Times: "A Prize for Mr. Gore and Science"

Here are the first five paragraphs of today's editorial:

One can generate a lot of heartburn thinking about all of the things that would be better about this country and the world if the Supreme Court had done the right thing and ruled for Al Gore instead of George W. Bush in 2000. Mr. Gore certainly hasn’t let his disappointment stop him from putting the time since to very good use.

Yesterday, the Nobel committee celebrated that persistence and awarded the Peace Prize to Mr. Gore and a panel of United Nations scientists for their efforts to raise awareness of the clear and present danger of global warming.

The committee said that the former vice president “is probably the single individual who has done most” to create worldwide understanding of what needs to be done to halt the damage caused by greenhouse gas emissions. It credited the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change for creating “an ever-broader informed consensus about the connection between human activities and global warming.”

What the citation didn’t mention but needs to be said is that it shouldn’t have to be left to a private citizen — even one so well known as Mr. Gore — or a panel of scientists to raise that alarm or prove what is now clearly an undeniable link or champion solutions to a problem that endangers the entire planet.

That should be, and must be the job of governments. And governments — above all the Bush administration — have failed miserably.

No, Hauling a Basket of Dirty Laundry in the Back of Your Tour Van Isn't Comparable...

- ∆ t (Minus Delta T) - The Project

(1984, Ata Tak WR 21 [LP] /Ata Tak WR 22 [bonus 7"]; out of print.)

Oh yeah... An ethno-avant holy grail and collector scum prayer mat rolled into one deliriously improbable package.

--

From Mike Hentz' 1983 (?) essay The Philosophical Data Bank of Minus Delta T:

So who is Minus Delta T?

Minus Delta T is a name of a group of people who are not at all uniform, who do not have the same ideas—but who work together. The group has existed since 1978, with a lot of people who were out before they had even really been in (those were mostly the ”specialists”). One of the principles of the group is the non-specialization—we want to be open for everybody and everything.

In the beginning we used to work a lot in the musical area, made performances, exhibitions, we did a lot of private works—maybe fifty-fifty between private and public, which seemed quite a good balance. Since 1980 we are working at this project, which had as the first title the ”Bangkok Project” (cf. the catalogue of Ars Electronica 1982, p. 157/154).

This project included the transport of a 5 1/2-ton stone, a dolmen, a European monument to Asia, as a catalyst of culture. On the truck we had a multi-media equipment, including sound, movie, and photo equipment, computer technology and laundromat.

The greater part of the group is right now in Asia preparing the further transport of our monolith to China (the monolith as such being completely unimportant) and on a tour in India within the setting of the Bangkok Project.

Minus Delta T is composed of the artists Karel Dudesek, Wolfgang Hofmann, Bernhard Müller, Gerard Couty, Walter Baumann, and Mike Hentz.

Seceding Between the Lines...

Karl ein Karl - Gramelot

(1985, Unit Records [CH] UTR-4006 LP; out of print; from the Rudolf Eb.er collection.)

(Above, Peter K. Frey of Karl ein Karl.)

---

Bio (from the Musinfo site):

Karl ein Karl are an ensemble consisting of three musicians with very different musical careers; they formed in 1982. Peter K Frey traversed the characteristic development of a typical jazz musician from swing through to free-jazz. Michel Seigner was, following his classical education, an active composer of film and theatre music who, in addition to his interests in contemporary music, also cultivated a partiality to rock and improvised music. Alfred Zimmerlin, accomplished composer and musicologist, entertained audiences not only with his freely improvised musical performances but also with his contemporary compositions.

Karl ein Karl has remained unchanged in its formation for over twenty years. Its establishment saw the trio radically challenge anew the grammar of the art of improvisation, leading to the development of an idiomatic tonal language. Soon after, however, the ensemble expanded its field of activity to become a collaborative team of composers and, from that moment on, all compositional decisions were made together.

Christian Marclay - Footsteps

(1989, Shedhalle / RecRec 26 LC 7981, one-sided LP; limited edition of 1,000, out of print.)

Notes:

From June 4th through July 16th 1989 the floor of one of the Shedhalle galleries, Zürich, was covered with copies of a record titled Footsteps. During the six weeks of the installation, people were invited to walk on the records - willingly or not, they had to step on them to reach the adjacent galleries where other sculptures were exhibited. Sounds of footsteps were recorded in December 1988 in the deserted hallways of the Clocktower (N.Y.), and in the studios of Harmonic Ranch (N.Y.), where Keiko Uenishi's tap dancing was mixed in. Over the course of six weeks, more than 1500 visitors walked over the fragile floor and contributing to the final composition by altering the records' surface with dirt and scratches.

From Crooks and Liars, in Case You Missed It...

WWII veteran Nazi interrogators denounced Bush’s Torture techniques...

Not the best constructed sentence I've seen this morning - it gives one the impression that ex-Nazi inquisitors are castigating the Bush administration for bungling the old third degree.

But, no, despite the introductory obfuscation, this is one news item that makes an enormous amount of common sense. Try to drown this testimony in the ice-cold waterboarding trough:

“We got more information out of a German general with a game of chess or Ping-Pong with than they do today, with their torture,” said Henry Kolm, 90, an MIT physicist who had been assigned to play chess in Germany Hitler’s deputy, Rudolf Hess."

Read the article, and weep for this enfeebled age.

It's been nearly a year since Gerard Klauder's suicide, and the Smack Shire website continues to function...

GK was a resolutely lapsed Catholic; one doubts he took the Eucharist while slumped in the front seat of his dad's Italian roadster. But even as carbon monoxide snuffed out his last, stubborn, sensate impulses, he must have sensed that transubstantiation was as likely a fate for him as, say, retirement at 67.

My belief? He either became his father's garage, or fused with the purloined code of the old TSSR index page. With the latter, a simultaneously brilliant and god-awful projection of (his) fractured identity, he could certainly have done worse.

(We'd rather have him moping about in corporeal redoubts, of course.)

Rest well, you sick fuck.

TS

Postscript from the future:

Our friend Gerard Klauder, prolific audio terrorist, TSSR co-founder, and indefatigable lunatic, died in October of 2006. The diabolical bastard designed the final iteration of the Smack Shire label website to resemble a dead-end/404/expired domain page purchased on the cheap by spam squatters. Brilliant, but extremely fucking annoying, as the site still stands, and less observant fans continue to send orders despite admonishments. PLEASE, FOR FUCK'S SAKE, STOP ORDERING FROM THE SMACK SHIRE SITE! Gerard is dead, and his PayPal (and website/ISP/password) info died with him.

As of August 27, 2008, we're no longer accepting any orders for TSSR back catalogue. We're on permanent haitus.

Any orders sent to GK's former address are done so at the sender's risk - no albums will be shipped, nor will refunds be sent, as I have neither access to nor responsibility for any accounts of his that may still be functioning. Any orders sent to the TLASILA address will be immediately rejected.

I'll bring a few boxes of the six albums released by the Smack Shire along with us on the 2010 farewell trek, but until then, the vault will remain sealed.

Thanks,

TS

Diamanda Galás: The Metalanguage Album

Diamanda Galás - Diamanda Galas

(1984, Metalanguage LP 119; out of print.)

This was sourced from a cassette I made in '86 of my original Metalanguage vinyl copy. I still have the album, of course, but as it's quite old and otherwise impossible to find I'd rather not pull it from the vault. This must do for the moment.

(Sound quality of the tape is on a par with the Faust. Eros. Tot bootleg I posted some months ago, but I'll probably re-up it again before the end of the week - levels are HOT.)

Needless to say, this is an astonishing collection, one fairly screaming to be reissued...

Side A recorded Feb. 1984 at 1750 Arch Studios, Berkeley, CA.

Side B recorded Oct. 1981 by Ed Herrmann at KOPN, Columbia, Missouri, on the Ionizations Concert Series with funding from the National Endowment for the Arts & Missouri Arts Council.

Redoubled #3

Hello...

Another Shave micro-compilation. The third and final entry in the series was extracted from folders marked "208" through "309," unearthed in the back-up hard drive/lye pit used to extinguish outtake material discarded during the second day of sessions for Noon and Eternity.

There's hour upon hour of the stuff; Noon was a veritable Smile of dread and catarrh.

(Uhh, wait - so was... Okay, we've got shared meta-spittle and ur-day sweats, but at least we've reached a Mercator spine about which we can disagree.)

A Slo-Mo Collision of Foam Slugs Traveling at Minimal Velocity...

TLASILA - Jocy de Oliveira vs. Matt Munro

Here's an oblique rendering - a Brazilian soft-avantrix poised against the buttery bulwark of a sweater-sheathed UK pop apparatchik. Neither can be faulted on their note-perfect tone, but the overall effect of this fusion is oddly noisome. (I blame George Martin.)

Oh well, back to Butlins Recife.

I Smell You at the Ox Bow Pool...

TLASILA - Blowfly vs. David Toop (et al.)

Wherein Monsieur Reid's 1976 treatise Oldies But Goodies takes the piss out of (or, rather, urinates into the yawning maw of) the Toop-curated (and unfortunately titled) '07 compilation Sound/Scape: Ecology, Luxury, Degradation.

(Note: the cover of B'fly's Oldies album is fairly dire, so I've replaced its with the far more evocative Weird World of... sleeve. Hope you aren't too offended.)

Redoubled #2

Hello,

This micro-compilation was extracted from a disc containing 112 loop constructions intended for tracks 9-12 of Horóscopo: Sanatorio de Molière.

Initially, the album was to have contained as many compositions as there signs of... uh, well, you know.

A large chunk of Horóscopo's four-year gestation was spent eliminating material; as always, I recorded and re-recorded nigh onto infinity.

(Of the 59 blips sequenced herein, I must admit that four of them actually made it into the final mix. Care to spot them?)

There are at least 12 GB of Horó outtakes gathering dust in the archive, but that's the price one pays for being mega-obsessive.

Each of the 112 was recorded at OHNE HQ in Arrau, Switzerland, from June-July 2002.

Sources: a pair of Technics turntables, a mixer, and the detritus of Rudolf Eb.er's record collection...

Bockris Secretly Preferred Carmen...

TLASILA - VU vs. Rechenzentrum

Formalism oozes over nostalgia, with the latter in time lurching to occlude the flow of the former. Eventually, predictably, they align.

The impulse is almost always misplaced or - far worse - misread.

Thus it shall always be with the aulde (avant) guard, our various Brigate Rosse - accumulations of gestures adding up to little more than seat-shifting in the waiting room of dire temporality...

With that, Another View contra Director's Cut.

Happy now?

Redoubled #1

Today we begin a new TLASILA reclamation series, Redoubled.

Every other day for the next week we'll assemble an exclusive, 60-second track - in essence, a very short compilation - drawn from unreleased or otherwise exceptionally rare material, specific either to time, tour, session, or similar convergent variables.

The first micro-comp was stitched from extracts taken from forty To Live and Shave in L.A. live performances (both before live audiences and in radio studios) which took place in the state of Florida from early 1994 through mid-'95.

TLASILA:

Ben Wolcott, Rat Bastard, and Tom Smith (yours truly), with Steven Garnett guesting, in the odd burst, on guitar.

01 Redoubled #1: 40 from 94, 95 (1:01)

Mix 1 Oct 07 by TS.

TLASILA - Scott Stapp vs. Burning Star Core
