That the Islamic Republic is threatening a think tank, FDD, is unbelievable. Even those who are frequently defensive of the regime should be reacting to this and making it clear this is intolerable and should it in any way act on the threat justify its complete isolation.

I wish US officials would not “out” Israel when it carries out strikes against Iran or its proxies in Syria or now Iraq. Ambiguity leaves Iran in a position where it need not respond. Denying them an excuse not to respond increases the prospect of conflict. Not smart.

Israel should resist Trump's efforts to politicize support —We wrote this because those who value the US-Israeli relationship, here and in Israel, should be acting to preserve its bipartisan underpinning.

Israel’s ties to America have been rooted in shared values and being an American, not a democratic or republican, interest. President Trump seeks to make Israel a partisan issue and yesterday the prime minister of Israel acquiesced in that. What a mistake.

The Revolutionary Guard has the upper hand in decision-making in Tehran now. They are counting on Trump’s reluctance to use force and European fears of escalation to pressure a retreat on sanctions. But Iran’s behavior makes that less likely now and escalation more likely.

Was on Mike Morrell’s podcast, “Intelligence Matters.” We covered Iran, what is going on and why, how to think about the negotiations with the Taliban and whether it genuinely wants to make peace, and what can be done between Israelis and Palestinians. Interesting conversation.

Imagine if we had soft power—the kind that makes us a source of attraction, makes others want to identify with and be responsive to us. Internationally, Iran would have been held responsible for the attacks, losing deniability and increasing deterrence.More than hard power needed

With Iran’s shoot down of our drone, and Trump saying Iran made a big mistake, fear of escalation and war among our allies will be high. As I wrote in the Washington Post, Trump can use that fear to say to our allies: join us in multinational naval task force and I won’t react.

Just on C-Span’s Washington Journal, callers’ skepticism about Trump Administration approach to Iran is a reminder that going it alone and not having international support will make any policy hard to sustain. It will also make it harder to deter Iran’s asymmetrical actions.
