G.I. Gurdjieff- Harmonic Development

G.I. Gurdjieff' was a noted early 20th-century mystic type, known for his teachings in a self-proclaimed "Fourth Way" of balanced personal/spiritual development. He is also known for having established the modern use of the enneagram as method for self-understanding. Regardless of whether or not Gurdjieff was in fact a genius or just a very clever charlatan, there's no question he was responsible for a great deal of interesting music. Says Wikipedia: "The last musical period is the improvised harmonium music which often followed the dinners Gurdjieff held in his Paris apartment during the Occupation and immediate post-war years, to his death in 1949." This is the stuff of Harmonic Development; a combination Book & CD offering of Gurdjieff's improvisations released by the Dutch record label, Basta. Can't give you the book, but here is the music. (Thanks to my anonymous source for the hook-up.)

Omar Khorshid- Guitar El Chark (Guitar of the Orient) SF052

Holy Smokes- I am so amped about Sublime Frequencies' new Omar Khorshid collection. This guy totally rips Feel free to download his fantastic Rhythms from the Orient and V/A- Eastern Standard Time from here, in the meantime.

From The SF website:

The late Omar Khorshid remains an iconic legend of the Arab world, though he’s received criminally little international acclaim. Born in Cairo in 1945, the glittering age of Egypt's cultural reinvention, Khorshid was soon to become one of its luminaries and most well-known, if short-lived, voices. He is regarded as the greatest guitarist the Arab world has ever known. By the mid 60s Khorshid was established with his group Le Petit Chats, an Egyptian beat group modeled after the prevailing influence of Elvis and the Beatles. It was at this time that one of the reigning figures of contemporary Arabic music, Abdel Halim Hafez, asked Omar Khorshid to join his orchestra. With Baligh Hamdi composing, Hafez with Khorshid in place would create some of the most innovative modern sounds in the Arabic musical canon.

Time with the Hafez orchestra offered Khorshid instant fame, and it wasn’t long before he was asked to play with the queen of Arab music, the voice of Egypt herself -Oum Kalthoum. Over the next few years Khorshid became a well-established and integral part of the Arab musical landscape. He was featured heavily in live concerts, national TV and radio and studio recordings, playing for the leading artists of the day. The guitar had now become an essential ingredient in the Oriental orchestra.

Khorshid began recording albums under his own name for the prestigious Lebanese record labels Voice Of The Orient and Voice Of Lebanon. Working with visionary engineer Nabil Moumtaz at Polysound studios in Beirut, Khorshid would take his music into some of the most progressive musical terrain of its time. The tracks included here in this retrospective are from the prolific span of Khorshid’s career in Beirut from 1973 to 1977. The venerable Palestinian poet Mahmoud Darwish best encapsulated this time in Lebanon: “unfortunately, it was paradise”.

Khorshid’s prolific instrumental music enjoyed recognition that transcended class and status during the brief period he shone. It’s a testament to his immense talent and some of the finest guitar music the world has ever heard.

This limited edition 2-LP vinyl release features over 80 minutes of classic original recordings compiled by Sublime Frequencies housed in a beautiful full-color gatefold jacket with extensive liner notes.

Roy Budd- The Best of Budd: Original Soundtrack Music by Roy Budd

In addition to his extraordinary talents as a songwriter and graphic artist, my good buddy Nate Ashley is an absolute soundtrack fanatic. Nate's been working on finishing his 5-disc magnum-opus anthology of rare and essential horror movie music- a project he calls Written In Blood- for the past few years. His knowledge of the genre and commitment to perfection is sure to yield a instant-classic bootleg compilation; one for the ages. Having already been privy to the first few volumes, I can personally assure you that Written In Blood is a truly amazing effort & I am happy to announce that Ghostcapital will debut this collection with much pomp and circumstance in the next few weeks. In the meantime, allow me to share this Nate-compiled Roy Budd collection, unofficially released on his own Left-Handed Label. Budd soundtracked oodles of 1970s Thrillers, including; Get Carter, The Carey Treatment, Kidnapped, Foxbat, Mama Dracula, The Marseille Contract...and more. His orchestrated scores are lush and atmospheric, a sample-junky's dream, much akin to the celebrated work of David Axlerod. Thanks for this, Nate. And nice artwork, dude. Enjoy.

Gino Washington- Out of This World

Soul Dynamite!

Broken Water- Whet

The Broken Water LP on Night People is killing it! Distorted, sludgy 90's-sounding rock & roll that sounds to me like Dinosaur Jr meets The Swirlies.

Says Night People:
This is the debut LP by Olympia Washington 3 piece Broken Water. Consisting of former Sisters (Parts Unknown Records) and Celebration members, Broken Water's sound seems to resound in the rainy coastal woodlands that they are surrounded by. Dense walls of slow swirling distortion breath out into moments of cold syrupy magma and reverb drenched beauty. Droning post punk bass grooves build foundations for constantly evolving guitar riffing and somber vocal passages, a subtle psychedelic sound as heavy as it is lite, as dark as it is colorful, and as deep as it is wide. Broken Water's dreamy take on hazy pastoral sonic exploration is as unique as it is nostalgic and provides endless amounts of killer listening. Silkscreened artwork by Shawn Reed

A classic and spellbinding performance from Egyptian singer Om Kalsoum, "The Star of the East", and her orchestra. Without really knowing, I'd be willing to bet my bottom dollar that's Omar Khorshid on guitar. Music by Baligh Hamdi, if I'm not mistaken. Anyone? This is truly wonderful stuff.

Doo Rag- Chunked and Muddled

1993 album from Tuscon's spastic lo-fi, gut-bucket garage blues duo.

From the Doo-Rag entry on Wikipedia:
Guitarist and singer Bob Log III played an acoustic/electric slide homemade dobro, which sounded akin to an electrocuted McDowell on amphetamines, mixed with AC/DC. He also played a $2 thrift store guitar in a similar slide fashion which often left the sound men at the clubs they were playing at in awe at its wicked growl during the duo's sound check. Doo Rag also employed a number of Thermos Malling's unique microphone setups to distort the vocals, and was as likely to be singing through a vacuum cleaner hose as to be singing into two hairdryers with built-in microphones. Thermos Malling contributed percussion using a custom-made drumkit compiled from a Budweiser box for a bass drum, a tin bucket as a snare drum, an old film reel as a cymbal, an iron shopping basket used as a hi-hat, and a number of other found objects.

Can't find any samples from Chunked & Muddled, so here's a Doo-Rag video for "Trudge", from What We Do, just to give you some idea...

Nudge Squidfish- 20,000 Leagues Under Nashville

I've been enjoying Tommy Jay's Tall Tales of Trauma, lately. Mid 80's weirdo garage psyche from Columbus, OH. I'm especially digging, "I Was There".

Strange, eccentric and kind of awesome.

Well, this Nudge Squidfish LP would appear to be the logical next step.

Says the Columbus Discount label;

"During a self-imposed exile in Nashville around 1985, frequent Quota and former "Peter Laughner" of the True Believers, Nudge Squidfish sent cassette transmissions back to his friends Mike Rep & Tommy Jay in Harrisburg, OH. From hours of cassettes Rep compiled this collection of psychedelic pop songs, synthesizer experiments, harmonic convergences, and fragments of his rock'n roll past that rival Mayo Thompson or Brian Wilson in complexity, pop sensibility, and authentic absurdity. Think we're talking it up? Well, Hey!... this IS the gem that launched Rep's storied cassette label, Old Age(/No Age). Upon Squid's return to Columbus, he would link up with the late Jim Shepard to form the legendary V-3. Painstakingly mastered for vinyl by Mike Rep from the original cassette. Edition of 500 LPs."

Mossy Davidson- North WInd Calling

Mossy Davidson's North Wind Calling is a kindly and pastoral 70's loner folk double-LP, originally self-released in 1977 on the private press imprint, Northwoods. Davidson's songs draw their inspiration from the rugged beauty of the Alaskan landscape. This is nice stuff. Also, she is Jewel's aunt.

Amps For Christ- Circuits

I've never figured why Amps For Christ are named Amps For Christ. I sure like 'em, though. Most of my favorite tracks- Edward, Grey Funnel Line, The Blacksmith, Sweet William And Lady Margaret- are warped, lo-fi experimental versions of classic British traditional ballads. AFC's Jeremy Barnes is known for meddling with strings and electronics, and has invented numerous instruments throughout the course of this project. Circuits was originally released on Vermiform in 1999.

Recently Discovered: Blind Blake- "Night and Day Blues/ Sun to Sun" (Paramount 13123)

Just found this on the Old Hat Records Site.
The biography of Blind Blake remains sketchy, but his recorded legacy is rich and his status as a guitar master is unquestioned. Blake’s repertoire of blues and ragtime was showcased by a string of popular releases on the Paramount label between 1926 and 1932. After that, Blind Blake simply vanished from the historical register.

Blind Blake’s music has long been enjoyed by blues enthusiasts through a series of reissues beginning in the LP era. There were gaps in his body of work, however. One disc that eluded collectors was Paramount 13123, recorded at Blake’s penultimate session of January 1932, a time when Paramount’s fortunes were fast crumbling. By then the company was shipping only minuscule quantities of records to select dealers and distributors, and few have survived to the present day.

Paramount 13123 finally came to light in 2007 when it was retrieved from an old steamer trunk in a trailer park in Raleigh, NC, and acquired by Marshall Wyatt of Old Hat Records.

Charanjit Singh- Synthesizing: Ten Ragas to a Disco Beat

Charanjit Singh's Synthesizing is a rad experiment in electrified disco ragas, originally released in 1982. With basslines courtesy of the Roland 303, this is essentially a proto-Acid House record in an Indian mode. Synthesizing is slated for an April reissue by Bombay Connection. I recommend picking this up. My own digital copy is not mastered as pristinely as the BC release and, further, its not broken up by song- the files are just labelled as sides 1 & 2. That in mind, I feel just fine about sharing it with you; my interweb friends.

Nothing People- Soft Crash (2010)

Soft Crash is the latest release by Orland, CA's Nothing People. Its an SS Records vinyl-only release, limited to 1000 copies. I keep reading references to Chrome, Hawkwind & Simply Saucer wherever they're mentioned. Sure, I hear what that's about- they're talking about the meandering punk-fuzz guitar & their occasional off-kilter electronics. Call me crazy, but I'm kind of hearing Gary Newman, Superchunk & Truman's Water in the vocals and the songs themselves. Joy Division is also a fair reference point, especially to the bassline in the title track. At times, they even remind me of a sort of less hardcore and less ridiculous Men's Recovery Project. Well, whatever dude: Music reviews are mostly bogus anyway. So, "don't take my word for it".

Struwwelpeter

Ever heard of Struwwelpeter? This book is an amazing 19th century exercise in corrective scare tactics for children. "Shock-headed Peter" and company learn all kinds of tough lessons in the consequences of misbehavior. Author Heinrich Hoffman conceived and wrote it as a holiday gift for his 3 year old son. The lessons herein are totally insane. I love it, but I absolutely can't imagine putting my own son to sleep at night with this stuff. My vote for most terrifying kids' book ever.

By The Fruits You Shall Know the Roots is a highly coveted and super out-of-print 3 LP collection of contemporary experimental folk music (if such a thing exists), jointly released by Time-Lag and Eclipse Records. I came into this one as a fan of Jack Rose, R.I.P. Tons of interesting stuff here, if "Freak Folk" and "The New Weird America" (or whatever other contrived label one might prefer for this genre) are your cup of tea.
