It was common in the scene for people to reimagine themselves. Changing one's name & music were a means of evolution. Pot Valiant were concerned with expanding from the cheer and jeer of teenage gatherings and forged a new path. From Vagrants to Valiant:

Pot Valiant's sole LP was tracked in early 1994 for the Benicia-based Iteration Records and released via famed distribution black hole Dutch East that summer to heady critical praise.

By the fall of 1993, Lookout Records was the toast of the Bay Area, releasing nearly 20 records by a diverse field of “punks.” Larry Livermore’s budding enterprise was a logical first step off the bus from Pot Valiant’s El Cerrito practice space.

Issued in 1993 on the Sacramento-based Sunney Sindicut label, “Volar” b/w “Low Dexterity Points” is a seamless blend of loud and quiet, with a punishing wall of fuzz guitars, punchy bass, and flam-happy drums filling in every available sonic crevice.

Their mid-punk crisis in full bloom, Pot Valiant abandoned dissonant guitars and garbled glass vocals in favor of a jangly, albeit introspective mood. Neither shoegaze nor emo, and sonically exiled from their Lookout peers, Pot Valiant carved out their own corner of the East Bay.

Their lone EP—1990’s Gone—was the thirty-second release on Larry Livermore’s taste-making Lookout Records concern. Over the course of a half decade, the band played only 50 gigs before changing names and direction, reappearing in 1993 as Pot Valiant.

Though they shared stages with the Gilman Street de rigueur—Green Day, Operation Ivy, Crimpshrine, et al—The Vagrants (as Pot Valiant were originally known) took a more introspective approach, channeling DC, early emo, and melodic hardcore.

After five years in the Gilman Street scene as The Vagrants, Pot Valiant resurfaced with a new name and sound. Their mid-punk crisis in full bloom, they traded dissonant guitars and glassy vocals in favor of a jangly, introspective mood. Stream it all:
