Tonight in the Explorers Room: Telecineradio and TVMusic from the Chappell Library

Tonight in the Explorers Room we return to the Chappell music library to investigate two very different series from the venerable label: Telecineradio, full of exotic themes and classic cinema sounds reminiscent of Italian comedy, boppy noir, and gladiator epics; and the TVMusic series, a run of four impressive, extremely playful LPs by Cecil Leuter and Georges Teperino (aka Roger Roger and Nino Nardini), featuring some of their most out-there, psychedelic, avant-garde sounds.  Plus some other choice cuts from the Chappell Recorded Music series, to round it out.

Tonight in the Explorers Room: A Baroque Tapestry of Grandeur and Excess

Tonight, the Explorers Room weaves a tapestry of grandeur and excess from strands of Baroque psych, Rococo pop & avant-harpsichord, full of alchemical esotericisms, regicidal urges, and unfathomable opulence.  Please accompany me in the chamber, my lords and ladies:

Tonight in the Explorers Room: Whirling Round the Sun, Burning

Tonight in the Explorers Room we'll be getting into some heavy psychedelia – apocalyptic, anarchic, anticonsumerist, and alienated examples of the circa '67 sound; also a small tribute to Scott Walker. Join us in the room as we tune in, drop out, shape our tools and let them shape us, etc., extensions through dimensions.

Tonight in the Explorers Room: Treasure Isle, Pleasure Dub

Tonight in the Explorers Room, we dig deep into one of our most beloved dub LPs: Pleasure Dub – a charming masterpiece of dubbed-out mid-60s rocksteady singles  from Duke Reid's Treasure Isle label, with music by Tommy McCook & The Supersonics and a superb mix by Reid's nephew, Errol Brown.  In addition to cuts from Pleasure Dub, we'll sample from Brown's two other dub LPs for Treasure Isle, investigate his later dub outings elsewhere, and have a thorough rundown of the outstanding originals by such greats as Phyllis Dillon, The Paragons, and John Holt.

Tonight in The Explorers Room: Marathon Time is Again Upon Us! Let it be a Bacchanal!

Tonight in the Explorers Room, we kick off our part of the WFMU marathon with the first of two weeks of marathonning, fund-raising programming. WFMU is one of the few institutions in the world of music, or this cursed planet in general, that seems to be unambiguously good, so undubtedly worth your support. Bursting with unfettered creativity and unique expressions, so vast and vital that it contains 4 alternate streams – including Give the Drummer Radio, to which I am lucky to belong – and listener-funded, with no corporate underwriting. So please, keep freeform radio alive with as generous donation as you are able; along the way, you may win some prizes.

For a pledge of $75 or more, you'll immediately get this year's Explorers Room DJ premium (and be in the running for prizes, more on that in a moment): Pagan Fruits & Other Rare Birds – Exotic sounds and modernist tabus (mambo, surf, percussion, jazz, organ music, etc.) from the Explorers Room record library. All ripped from vinyl right here in the Room.

For $20 or more you'll put yourself in the running for prizes (shown below), to be chosen by my cohost, Uncle Michael, throughout the show.  Really really good prizes this week, all but one is vinyl, with 3 double LPs in the mix!

Donate here:

OR, and this comes highly recommended if you have the means, become a Swag for Life member! (Still eligible for prizes, but so much more, too) Learn more about that here.

Tonight in the Explorers Room: On a Magic Isle, 'Neath a Lei of Stars

Tonight the Explorers Room returns from its accidental 2-week exile to swim in an all-vinyl sea of Hawaiiana.  Mystical romanticism and wide-eyed kitsch stroll together hand in hand in a fragrant moonlit garden, on a magic isle, as the surf sings its endless song. This is the hour, this is the moment.

Tonight in the Explorers Room: Romance & Legend Vie for First Place in an Adventurous History

First off, I've gotten some messages asking me why I haven't been updating, or if the show is still on the air. It is, and I just got busy enough to slack off updating this blog about Explorers Room.  I'm back on it baby but also please know I will always be on every Thursday, unless I am sick, traveling, or my internet is down.  So you can check out the place where it's happenin' whether I posted here or not and I betcha I'll be there.

Tonight in the Explorers Room, we'll hear sundry beloved sounds, from jungle cumbia to Bembeya-Jazz to Italian library groove & have an extended look into the sacred, psychedelic nyabinghi of Ras Michael & The Sons of Negus' output in the 1970s, a truly splendid run of albums.

All that and more, here, 7:00-10:00 –
