Guerilla Toss: September 7, 2019 Bowery Ballroom

September 19, 2019
By

It was last Halloween when our long-time fave space rock pranksters blasted off into Market Hotel, sold out the joint, and presided over perhaps the party of the year. It would be hard to match that epic night in NYC, and for almost a year Guerilla Toss didn’t even try. That is to say, this Bowery Ballroom night is their first proper local headlining gig since last Hallows Eve.

This Saturday night gig may not have been the pure rager that Market experienced, but as GT shows go, this was a real keeper. The band has developed a full-set style of playing distinct “parts” or segments where three or four songs flow naturally from one to the other, and as the band continues to master its live presentation, these segues have become nearly seamless. The Bowery show has not only a tremendous flow, but also a killer setlist, highlights including the Betty>Polly couplet, a Dose Rate that lived up to its name, and a guitar-heavy jammy Meteorological. Things bode well for the November release of the band’s latest EP, What Would The Odd Do? and we can’t wait.

The current Guerilla Toss Northeast Tour comes to a close with two shows, Friday in Boston and Saturday in Holyoke, dates here.

I recorded this set from our old balcony perch and mixed with an excellent feed from FOH Danielle. The sound quality is superb. Enjoy!

David Nance Group: September 6, 2019 Three Lobed / WXDU Annual Ritual of Summoning (Raleigh, NC)

September 16, 2019
By

If there are any constants in the musical universe, surely one of them is the Three Lobed / WXDU day show (dubbed the “Annual Ritual of Summoning” during the last few go-rounds) at Kings during the Hopscotch Music Festival. So abundant are this show’s riches that you almost have to remind yourself that, no, it’s not common for one five-hour span to feature insane one-off collaborations, unusual guest appearances, new act debuts, avant-garde soundscapes and visceral fucking noise.

This year’s day show checked a couple of those boxes right away, as the Omaha musician David Nance and his current touring trio teamed up with Tyler Damon (currently of Circuit des Yeux among many projects) to flay us with dual-drummer versions of “Amethyst” and “Prophet’s Profit” from Nance’s 2018 record Peaced and Slightly Pulverized, which introduced the prolific Nance to perhaps his widest audience yet. Suffice it to say he’s taking full advantage with his performances, as Nance takes the best of classic rock n’ roll and supercharges it with the intensity of these times. From the energy onstage, you wouldn’t know that not only had Nance played a late show the night before, but that it was only noon in Raleigh, North Carolina. By the last note of “Prophet’s Profit” the tone for the day had been set. Check back at this site to see more of what this annual jam had to offer.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK5 mics onstage, a soundboard feed, and MBHO microphones into the warm n’ fuzzy Aerco preamp back at the soundboard. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Chris Forsyth: September 6, 2019 Nublu

The Chris Forsyth residency at Nublu throughout this month got off to a great start last Friday, as Chris was joined by the most excellent Garcia Peoples for the third time in NYC this year. It was back at Nublu in March when this magic combination saw its first incarnation and the results were incendiary. The group later collaborated on a magic night at Market Hotel in July. This night offered a final local hook-up and the performance of all parties was unsurprisingly also en fuego.

Chris Forsyth released perhaps his most comprehensive work in April, and All Time Present material comprised the entire main set before the band reached back a few years for the non-encore track. But as was joked during the set, Garcia Peoples seemed to have rehearsed this material maybe even more than Forsyth, and the quintet was ready for every twist and turn and peak that their protagonist led.

Chris Forsyth returns every Friday this month to Nublu for what promises to be an historic residency. This week will feature Steve Wynn (Dream Syndicate) and Linda Pitmon (Minus 5) in a two-set affair that will deliver some never-before-heard iterations of band material and covers.

I recorded this set with the Schoeps cards mounted back about 20 feet from the stage and pointed at the stacks. The sound quality (other than some chatter) is quite excellent. Enjoy!

Boogarins: September 7, 2019 Hopscotch Music Festival, Kings (Raleigh, NC)

September 12, 2019
By

The Brazilian band Boogarins put on one of the most packed shows (at my favorite Raleigh venue, Kings) I saw at all of this year’s Hopscotch Music Festival, and for good reason. Not only are visiting bands from Brazil less-than-common in most parts of the States, but they’re a compelling live presence, weaving a tropicalia-influenced, trance-like groove that’s as much a head trip as a party. If Os Mutantes are the godfathers of so-called “Brazilian psych,” Boogarins are one of today’s more notable torchbearers. They’ve spent late summer hitting the stage with Mdou Moctar (who also followed them on this night), promoting their recently-released Sombrou Dúvida.

This being a festival set, Boogarins didn’t go full-throttle on the improvisation, save the nine-minute, multi-movement “Tempo.” Instead, we were treated to relatively straightforward versions of their album tracks, which is hardly a bad thing. Their second album, Manual, was nominated for a Latin Grammy, and it wouldn’t be surprising to see the new record (whose name means “Shadow or Doubt” in Portugese) take a similar tack. Boogarins will finish out this month here in the U.S.A. — don’t miss them if you have the chance.

I recorded this set with a combination of onstage Schoeps MK5 microphones, MBHO microphones at the soundboard, and a stereo soundboard feed. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Thanks to Nathan Walker and Riot Act Media for the invitation.

One Eleven Heavy: September 1, 2019 Union Pool

One Eleven Heavy’s second LP, Desire Path, doubles down on the seventies boogie rock vibe that made Everything’s Better so irresistible. Building on the first record’s foundation, though, it ventures further into loose, Dead-inspired jams with songs like “Chickenshit” and “Hot Potato Soup.” It’s a pure delight for anyone who’s ever owned a Dead record or discovered the other side of country music with Numero’s Comic American Music compilation.

I was pretty jazzed to finally see One Eleven Heavy—their short tour last year was full of misfortunes including a van accident and a venue closure that preempted their Brooklyn gig. Unthwarted, they’ve been touring the U.S. this month, beginning with this record-release show at Union Pool and winding up back where they began with a tour-capper this Saturday, September 14th at Trans-Pecos. (Grab your tickets!) For a band so with members so geographically separated, they sound here like they play together every day. I highly recommend you get yourself out to Trans-Pecos this weekend for a surefire good time.

I recorded this from our usual location at Union Pool, with MBHO mics in DIN stereo configuration, combined with a board feed. The sound is excellent. Enjoy!

Garcia Peoples: August 7, 2019 Brooklyn Bowl & July 27, 2019 Market Hotel

In case you’ve been hibernating for the summer, you should know that Garcia Peoples have a new album out on October 18, One Step Behind. It’s a two song deal, with the title track being a newly-recorded 32-minute version of the song that’s been a staple in their live sets for a while now. You can preorder that for October delivery and get an 8-minute radio edit immediately. Can’t wait to hear the whole thing! The second song on the record is a new one, “Heart and Soul,” that you can preview here from their recent Brooklyn Bowl gig opening up for Howlin’ Rain and Ryley Walker. A couple other songs make their first appearance on one of our recordings: “Gliding Through” and “One at a Time,” plus a jam I’m pretty sure we’ve heard before in some form.

Then travel back to July when the Garcias played with Chris Forsyth at Market Hotel. We’ve already posted their set backing Forsyth, but here finally is the proper Garcia Peoples set. And by the way, you can see the Garcia Peoples backing Chris Forsyth again this Friday September 6 at Nublu. Do not miss that!

For more of that very necessary Garcia Peoples fix they’re playing Philadelphia on Sept 14 with Chris Forsyth and Sept 29 in Asbury Park with Real Estate. Then in October, they’ll be doing a residency at Nublu every Thursday night. Wow!

I recorded this with a pair of MBHO hypercardioid mics positioned at our usual spot at Brooklyn Bowl. The sound is excellent. Enjoy!
