Duo Ouro Negro com Sivuca- Africanissimo (Columbia/EMI, Angola)

An upgrade for an all-time favorite! Duo Ouro Negro were an amazing popular harmony group formed out of 1950's Angola. Sivuca is the heavyweight Brazillian accordionist feautured prominently on side-A. Side B appears to have been cut at different sessions with other backing combos. You may have seen this record here or here before, but never at 320 kbps*. Big thanks to Dom for the rip and the scans. An essential.

*Side B is different here than on other versions I've had. While confusing, its hard to argue with the tracklist as shown on that great scan of the back cover.

V/A- Angola 60's: 1956-1970

"Buda Musique's [Angola] series...captures the sounds of different ethnic regions within Angola, their effects on each other, and the way that the Portuguese and Cuban influences were absorbed into urban Angolan culture. Some songs focus on close polyphonic harmonies, tapping rhythms and ringy, simple guitar melodies; others have cascades of creaky percussion and huge choruses; still others anchor on the accordion. It starts to get really interesting around track nine, when the frenzy slows, turning to fabulous intimate, small-scale recordings that you can't tell if are Latin or African in origin. By the end of the disk, they've brought in the electric guitars, jumping up, incorporating more Western chord progressions and swinging funk rock, especially on the classic, screaming 'Muzangola' by Vum Vum. Can't wait for the rest!" (Other Music)

Good stuff. 320kbps. If anyone's got a line on a better scan, hit me up!

Duo Ouro Negro- Selections

Duo Ouro Negro were an amazing longstanding Angolan harmony group. They are criminally unknown outside the Portuguese speaking world. I've just crafted myself a personal favorites compilation, culled from the highlights of two other official hits collections; 40 Años, 40 Exitos & O Melhor do Duo Ouro Negro. My goals were to remove the weaker late 70s/80s tracks, and to generally not include tracks from Duo Ouro Negro com Sivuca, which is a stand-alone masterpiece*. FYI, I'm always looking to download of their original albums, especially those prior to the mid 70s. Please hit me up if you have a lead. These guys are seriously the best!

Duo Ouro Negro- Com Sivuca

For fans of harmony groups like Los Zafiros, here is one of my very favorite un(re)discovered gems: Duo Ouro Negro com Sivuca. DON were a lively folk-pop group formed in 1950's Angola. So far, I've found very little written about them in English. Their name means "Black Gold Duo"- a reference to the value of petroleum- and, if I understand correctly, their musical style can be classified as criado. Sivuca appears to be a badass Brazillian accordion player accompanying the DON. This album, com Sivuca, dates from 1959. I can personally guarantee that, if you aren't already savvy to the DON, then this could easily be some of the most beautiful, upbeat and exotic tropical music you've never heard.
