CHANTAL WEBER - Chantal Weber (1983 Mega rare French privately pressed LP on the Kiosque d'Orphee label)

Ultra rare private french folk, very cosmic female vocals.
Chantal has the most beautiful fragile voice, a highly recommended classic.
Silk screened cover – numbered edition, this copy is number 15 of 226 – complete with insert.

Listen to this track and you'll be convinced about Chantal Weber's great vocals :

STEVE & ED - "Dream Song" (Rare 1975 US Psych Folk masterpiece)

A surprisingly good folk-pop lp on the vanity label Century that I picked up recently due to my "leave no stock cover behind" compulsion. The notes say it was recorded in a Los Angeles area church, and it has a sort of cavernous low-fi sound quality that I quite enjoy. Very soothing Simon & Garfunkel-esque harmonies on most tracks, with sparse, acoustic heavy arrangements. Recorded in 1975, but tracks like "I Love The Rain" could easily pass for late 60′s to my ears. The majestic, spoken title track is nice as well. (from waxidermy)

Very great 1975 private pressed LP from Steve Hicks and Ed Rosiek.
A top fave of mine !

JED (aka Jed O'Connor aka Jed Silverstar) - "Merlin's Song" (Very rare 1982 US Psyche Folk masterpiece)

"Mystical, medieval folk songs played and sung very convincingly. And unlike some in the genre, I'm under the suspicion that the psych aspect is unintentional, but rather a natural setting for the songs that were written. This was recorded as some kind of educational project for a Florida based program specializing in all things from the Arthurian period. As far as the music, it's beautiful minor key folk with intricately woven male and female vocals. Fans of bands like Stone Angel, etc. would do well to track this down. Makes you want to dance with the jester".

Another of my top ten "desert island" LPs.

JILL CISLAGHI - "Friends of Mine" (Very rare 1977 US masterpiece)

One of my top ten US private pressed LPs.
Jill Cislaghi wrote and recorded her only album in her senior year in 1977 at Regis College, in Massachusetts near where she grew up.
Cislaghi pressed 500 copies on Massachusetts' own vanity custom-pressing plant Fleetwood Recording Co. She made this record for her friends and wound up selling nearly every copy at her college, so this LP is incredibly hard to come by now.

REALITY FOLK - "Profile : Reality Folk" (1973 incredibly rare UK Folk LP - Profile GMOR 001)

Quaint lp of delicate folk music with precious harmonies from Barbara, Cob, Clive, and Steve, accompanied by acoustic guitars, double bass, and tambourine.
Few original titles but great deal of British charm enlivening cherished traditionals like ‘When The Stars Begin To Fall’, ‘When I Survey The Wonderous Cross’ to a Welsh tune, ‘We Shall Not Be Moved’, and ‘Amazing Grace’.  Also songs by Parchment, Judy MacKenzie, Tom Paxton, and The Seekers.  ‘The Football Supporter’ is an interesting verbal soliloquy recited with strong Cockney accent in the tradition of ‘First Day In Church’ (Nigel Goodwin, Larry Norman) comparing cheering football fans to Jesus’ glum silent supporters.
The first release on this very rare highly sought after collectible Profile label.
Dark red cover with four black silhouetted profiles.

TURLEY RICHARDS - "From Darkness to Light - Solo Concert" (Very rare 1972 US Psych Folk LP)

Turley Richards (born Richard Turley June 12, 1941 in Charleston, West Virginia) is an American singer and guitarist.
Richards was blinded in the left eye at the age of four in an archery accident, and lost sight in the right eye as well some years later. He first began playing in a group called The Five Pearls while still a teen in the 1950s. His first appearance on record was a single titled "All About Ann", released on Cincinnati, Ohio label Fraternity Records.
He moved to Los Angeles with an ensemble in the early 1960s, but his band failed and he returned to West Virginia. Later in the 1960s he moved to New York. He played the uptown East Side local Bar's (Malachy's II) (72nd & Lexington) and eventually found success in New York. He released his debut album on Warner Bros. Records in 1970. He scored two minor hit singles in the US in the early 1970s.

Turley Richards' "From Darkness To Light - Solo Concert" is the most complex and illustrative album of his incredible talents.

GRAHAM DAVIES - "... Then I Stood Back" (1976 UK Xian Folk Rock on Sharing Records)

Superb understated folkrock recording from soft-voiced British singer/songwriter. Graham’s songs often coast along to a fast-tempo strum, sometimes accompanied by harmonica (‘The Road Is Hard’, ‘He’s The Way’), other times with fluid electric guitar leads (‘Robert’, ‘What You Did For My Brothers’, ‘You Are The Body Of Christ’ and the rock-and-roller ‘I Look To The Cross’). Some beautiful slower acoustic tracks as well, like ‘God Has Left The Valley’, ‘Where Is Your Faith’, ‘The Waters Of Shiloah’ and ‘But Then I Stood Back’. Light distant behind-the-scenes keyboard activity (synthesizer, organ, piano) and femme backing vocal, along with acoustic guitar, bass and drums.

HAMILTON CAMP - "Welcome to Hamilton Camp" (1969 US Great Folk LP)

On 1969's "Welcome to Hamilton Camp" LP, Hamilton Camp returned largely to his pre-folk-rock roots as a straight folksinger.
Camp played all the guitars and harmonicas and sang all the lead and background voices on this wholly acoustic record; in fact, he did everything, save for a little piano by producer Bobby Paris.
It's a curious mix of Camp originals and covers of songs both famous (by Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, Peter LaFarge, and Leonard Cohen) and obscure (by Patrick Sky, Bob Neuwirth, and Peter Boyd).
Camp's brand of acoustic folk is both moody and haunting, enhanced by some reverb in the production.

MARTIN McBAIN - "Winter ... on the Harbour" LP + 2 singles (all 3 records EXC / EXC)

Original pressing on the small Tasmanian independent label, Candle Records, from 1983.

His 7" single from 1984.
The 'A' side is a song from his super-rare psych-folk LP, "Winter...On The Harbour", but is a totally different recorded version.
Whereas the LP version is strictly acoustic, this version sees him with full band, still very folk-y and ethereal though.
The 'B' side was, at the time, a totally new song and is equally as good. Both sides are full of melody, with gorgeous melodious vocals, and superb lyrics - of the ilk of mid-'60's Dylan ... he was obviously a thinker.

JAY BOLOTIN - "Jay Bolotin" (1970 US original on the small Commonwealth United label)

Given he was only 18 at the time, 1970's cleverly-titled "Jay Bolotin" offered a surprisingly impressive and accomplished set of singer/songwriter material.
Like lots of his folk contemporaries Bolotin had a deep and slightly ragged voice that wasn't immediately attractive, but actually grew on you after awhile.
A couple of reviews have drawn comparison's to Leonard Cohen, though to my ears his voice was actually far better than Cohen's.
Featuring ten Bolotin originals, the album also had a distinctive 'live' feel to it.
Backed by a fantastic pickup band, including Lyon on bass, Fugs drummer Bobby Mason, guitarist David Mowry, and keyboardist Mark Taber about half of the tracks featured electric arrangements. Unfortunately the Commonwealth United label collapsed shortly after the album was released, leaving the album to instant obscurity.
Bolotin continued touring, winning fans within the folk musician community, though little attention elsewhere.
