Aquarium Drunkard Presents :: Ghost Capital II (A Mixtape)

Hey friends, this here's the second mixtape I've had the honor of curating for Aquarium Drunkard . This time, I thought I'd try to pretend that I'm a regular DJ on their weekly show. A generous helping of new & favorite rock, folk & soul rotation from ye olde home studio (aka my living room). The way I see it, AD blends dusty golden grooves and real-time cool with such admirable integrity, that I thought it would be fun to try my hand at it too. A good excuse to flip the script on myself. Not sure I really pulled it off, per se, but I sure had a good time trying. Dan Melchior, Mikal Cronin, Moon Duo, Mariee Sioux, and my pal Mike Coykendall lend their blessed talents to the more contemporary angle. (And FYI - Mike's song is as-of-yet unreleased. It's featured his excellent new album, which he's currently shopping around to various labels, etc.) At times, the flow does embody something of a somber mood. Just couldn't be helped. I do hope, for better or worse, that the downer vibe does resonate with some of you readers. And if you have Sirius/XM access you can tune to AD's weekly program this Friday at noon. I'm totally hosting the show. Also, big ups to the benevolent Owl for throwing me the Gene Clark joint. And love to Eugene Von Bruenchenhein for the stunning image up yonder. Word.

"Our mixtape series returns with our second set featuring Nick Barbery of the Portland, OR based Ghost Capital. Find his first entry, here. With an ear bent toward the obscure and out-of-print, digging globally, Ghost Capital mines the secret shafts of psych, folk, blues and beyond."

Ghost Capital is my guest, this Friday, during the second hour of the AD show on SIRIUS/XMU.

Ready When You Are, JB: The Very Best of John Barry's Early Soundtracks *Redux

Here's an excellent custom-expanded John Barry collection from soundtrack wizard, Nate Ashley.

A note from Nate:

"The skinny on Ready When You Are J.B.-

This album has been out of print for a while. The original being 12 tracks, which I revamped to 25. Any James Bond themes are instrumental versions from the original soundtracks, making it a purely instrumental record. There are some real classics on here that I searched hard for. The original album was released in 1970, with John Barry rerecording his 'best' soundtrack songs with a more stripped-down ensemble, which, in my opinion, are superior to some of the original orchestral versions. My dad had this on vinyl when I was a kid and passed it on to me, a true classic. Enjoy.

P.S.- I used [read: Nate made] new art for it, of course. :)"

*Thanks so much, Mr. Nate!

Duo Ouro Negro- Selections

Duo Ouro Negro were an amazing longstanding Angolan harmony group. They are criminally unknown outside the Portuguese speaking world. I've just crafted myself a personal favorites compilation, culled from the highlights of two other official hits collections; 40 Años, 40 Exitos & O Melhor do Duo Ouro Negro. My goals were to remove the weaker late 70s/80s tracks, and to generally not include tracks from Duo Ouro Negro com Sivuca, which is a stand-alone masterpiece*. FYI, I'm always looking to download of their original albums, especially those prior to the mid 70s. Please hit me up if you have a lead. These guys are seriously the best!

Ghostcapital Mix: 22nd Century

This is an older mix, but a good one- heavy on the soul & psych, with lots of good breaks. I made it a couple of years ago for my friend Torrance. Its named after the lead track, 22nd Century by Nina Simone. I later found out that this amazing song was originally written by Bahamian songwriter, Exuma. "The 22nd Century is the century of the Christian Era or Common Era in accordance with the Gregorian calendar." (Wikipedia) It also happens to be the subject of zillions of speculative sci-fi novels, including Noon: 22nd Century by Arkady and Boris Strugatsky (Russian version pictured above). The song, as a 9 minute "epic mystical speculative protest ballad" (my words), is also a fairly unorthodox way to start a mix. I reckon it won't be for everyone, but I just love it and besides it gets things going with a bang. The rest of the disc isn't bad either.

I haven't found as much of her music as I would've liked so far, but here's a selection of the 6 best tracks I've been able to pin down. If anyone out there knows where I can land a copy of her Memory Lane album, for purchase or download, please enlighten me. Enjoy.

Al Balabil- The Nightingales البلابل

Al Balabil ("The Nightingales") are three singing sisters who are considered to be "The Supremes of Sudan". Their wistful harmonizing is among the most beautiful sounds that has ever graced these ears. As I've been wildly unable to track down an actual album, tape or disc by these ladies (since I don't speak Arabic), I went ahead and culled these recording from various Sudanese TV performances and ordered them here into a one-disc collection of my favorite tracks. I hope this does for you what it does for me. Pardon me, but I didn't even attempt to decipher the track names. If one of you out in webland happens to know their catalog, by all means, please help me translate the song titles.

ghostcapital mix disc: The Bold & The Beautiful

Hey folks, here's my Feb 2010 ghostcapital mix; a 2-cd affair I'm calling The Bold & The Beautiful. Or, alternately, The Mad & The Sad. Ha! The first disc's definitely more aggro than the second. As per usual for me, the selection is literally all over the map. Did my very best to make it flow nicely. Listener feedback will be highly appreciated. Enjoy!
