XMAS DELIGHTS - The only listenable Christmas compilation...ever! (a Moahaha re-gift)

Just in time to spread the yuletide cheer; an immaculate Christmas reshare from RYM's discerning Moahaha, friend of flawless tastes. In a genre that tends heavily toward mediocre schmaltz, XMAS DELIGHTS is packed with more than a few of my very favorite things. Yes, Virginia, there is a brilliant Santa comp.

"Well, I for one have never came across a listenable one that wasn't made by myself. As everyone else genuinely interested in music I generally despise this "genre", but every year I make some sort of Christmas-comp. And for a short period in December I really love spinning the 3-4 hour worth of  standout songs I've discovered throughout the years. So I figured I might as well collect and share about 2x45 minute long set for the holidays at my favorite place in blogland too. First half (Santa) is primarely lighthearted secular joy for your Christmas parties or whatever. And the second half (Jesus) a little more contemplative filled with seasonal folksongs, sentimental oldies and heartfelt religious tunes. I know it won't be your favorite album ever, but I'm only aiming for it to become you favorite Christmas compilation. So with this Moahaha wishes you all a Merry Christmas!"

(V/A) -- Unholy Hymns: Written in Blood Vol. 6 (Left-Handed Label, 2011)

As Samhain rapidly approaches, the one & only Nate Ashley has just dropped off a surprise 6th volume in his essential Written In Blood soundtrack series. Dig:

"In keeping with the rest of the Written In Blood series, Unholy Hymns offers more classic, out-of-print, or unreleased horror soundtrack music. Taken from DVD or VHS sources when unattainable elsewhere; I tried to get the best quality available to provide an enjoyable listening exprience for the music connoisseur. Charles Berstein and Stelvio Cipriani were stand out composers for me on this volume, while Luchi De Jesus's track "Diggin' For Parts" proved to be nearly impossible to find, but worth every funky second. Hope you have a horribly fun time with these sinfully good songs." ~ Nate

Ghostcapital Guest Mix: Double Dip Obsesh (*by Tim Westberg)

Howdy folks. This 3rd installment in Ghostcapital's Guest Mix seriescome from my pal Tim Westberg. He's a member of a Philly-VA-Toronto group called My Mind, whom I've featured here before. This mix is signature Tim---With an inimitable love of the artful pop hook forever tempered by a predilection toward extemporaneous social/political didacticism. I'll admit that the Abba track starting this mix caught me off guard at first. Repeated listens, however, allowed me to hear beyond the schmaltz: Good song! And thematically appropriate...Had it kind-of on repeat for the past week or so. As evidenced by such tracks by Kriegshög and Leather, Westberg's also one of those folks who'll carry his hardcore roots with him forever. No doubt, Tim's gonna stay young until he dies...

Says he:
"Steve Jobs stepping down as C.E.O. of Apple Corps is a great example of how volatile and unpredictable the world is, and the troubled economic times we live in. At the time of this writing, Apple stock has dropped 5% during after-hours trading. No one is immune to the cruel fluctuations of the stock market, much in the same way that no one can prepare themselves for city-shaking earthquakes or predict glacier-melting global temperature changes. In our kontemporary era, characterized by the universal influence and inherent volatility of a kleptocratic global political-economy and the auto-erotic asphyxiation of our planet, things like art and music recede in importance. Does music provide a purely aesthetic balm to apply to the wounds of modernity? Does it function as yet another ingredient in the karmic honeypot, enticing us to further greed and entrapment? Van Dyke Parks (here represented with his uncredited production work on Allen Toussaint's "Southern Nights") described the "song form" as "the most powerful political weapon of our time," so perhaps despite the apparently imminent collapse of human society, further investigation into the arts may be warranted? "

Ghostcapital Guest Mix: Silence In Brooklyn / Silêncio no Brooklin, Vol. 1 (*by Paul B. Collins)

Ghostcapital is pleased to present this finely curated guest-mix of vintage Brazilian grooves from Mr. Paul B Collins, Brooklyn resident, Oregon native, and illustrious member of The Soft Landing & Beirut. I've been feeling this playlist & have kept it on iPod repeat for the last two weeks. (Big apologies that I've been so slow to share it) Many thanks to Paul for this superior selection of breezy Brazilian smoothness just in time for the start of this hot Ianque summer. Dig it!

"It is my belief that Brazilian music has not been reissued to its full potential.

Sure, most of the early Caetano and Os Mutantes, have been made available to the public. Tom Zé just had the vinyl box treatment. Four Men With Beards has given us Jorge Ben's "Força Bruta", and Soul Jazz has put out two fantastic Brazilian Rock compilations. That being said, these releases merely scratch the surface of what I see as one of the greatest moments in recorded musical history... Brazil in the 1960's and 1970's.

Silence in Brooklyn, Vol.1, is a compilation of Brazilian music from the 60's and 70's. The goal of it's release is to expand the listener's knowledge of these wonderful artists.

Listen to these musicians, find their music online, increase demand for vinyl reissues!"

-Paul B. Collins

Ghostcapital Guest Mix: CD/FM Radio (*by Chris Cilla, 2011)

Chris Cilla is a Portland underground cartoonist whose weirdo comix manage to melt my delicate cerebrum. His style is amazingly off-kilter, with an aesthetic lean toward oddball heros like Basil Wolverton or golden-era outsiders Fletcher Hanks and Boody Rogers, for starters. Chris is the only fellow I've ever known who has vocalized an abiding love for first-wave Scrooge McDuck comics. Just check the cover art- My man rules! This CD/FM Radio mix-disc offers more of Cilla's eccentric, mixed-up, stoney vibe- just in an auditory format. Dig it. Must admit, I was supremely disappointed not to see even a single track here by Chris' beloved Donald Fagen. (Ha!) I had already figured that for certain. Here's a wild ride through burnt-out garage riffs, sweeping funk grooves, and brief forays through the prog-driven haze. I would highly recommend consuming these selections while perusing Mr. Cilla's excellent new comic book- The Heavy Hand. (Details below)

The Heavy Hand, Chris' first graphic novel, was published by Portland's Spark Plug comics imprint in late 2010. A primo specimen of contemporary comic absurdism, it reads like a musty, beer stained David Lynch cartoon. I will make no attempt to synopsize, but will say I personally keep rereading it in the hope that this book's many bizarre, anachronistic details will one day all fall into place. As author/oracle, Chris has told me he "like[s] to think they will." Perfect. He's also given me permission to post a handful of image scans from he book, in conjuction with his rad mix-disc. So, take a looksie:

(V/A) All-Vinyl, All Rephlex Mix by Jason Fellows [Pt.1]

Super-dope! My own former (and favorite) DJ partner- one Mr. Jason Fellows of Brooklyn, NY- has just upped a continuous all-vinyl mix of his own personal selections from Rephlex Records' fantastic back-catalog. This'll be part one, with something of an emphasis on their more oddball releases. Part two (forthcoming) will yield an increase in BPMs in order to incorporate what Jason calls "the classic sound". I also hear tell that Grant Wilson-Claridge has slated some new Rephlex releases for this year. Here's to hoping for some newly-classic cuts from the once-and-future kings of "braindance"...

Roy Budd- The Best of Budd: Original Soundtrack Music by Roy Budd

In addition to his extraordinary talents as a songwriter and graphic artist, my good buddy Nate Ashley is an absolute soundtrack fanatic. Nate's been working on finishing his 5-disc magnum-opus anthology of rare and essential horror movie music- a project he calls Written In Blood- for the past few years. His knowledge of the genre and commitment to perfection is sure to yield a instant-classic bootleg compilation; one for the ages. Having already been privy to the first few volumes, I can personally assure you that Written In Blood is a truly amazing effort & I am happy to announce that Ghostcapital will debut this collection with much pomp and circumstance in the next few weeks. In the meantime, allow me to share this Nate-compiled Roy Budd collection, unofficially released on his own Left-Handed Label. Budd soundtracked oodles of 1970s Thrillers, including; Get Carter, The Carey Treatment, Kidnapped, Foxbat, Mama Dracula, The Marseille Contract...and more. His orchestrated scores are lush and atmospheric, a sample-junky's dream, much akin to the celebrated work of David Axlerod. Thanks for this, Nate. And nice artwork, dude. Enjoy.
