Sounds of the Streets: Istanbul

In September 2013 I visited Istanbul for the first time with the hopes of recording street musicians and any other interesting sounds I could find along the way.

This is the result of a couple weeks spent in the city--and my first time playing around with audio recording equipment.

A huge thanks to the Kickstarter folks who threw down for this project, the welcoming people of Istanbul, the whole Kadiköy crew and the many talented musicians of the city.

The purpose of this project was to share the sounds from a certain place and time with a minimal amount of audio alteration. I have hopes of sharing recordings like this again--and more frequently. The music is meant to be heard. Please download the album for what you see fit. Any proceeds from here will go solely to the funding of future projects in the vein of "Sounds of the Streets - Istanbul".

Khamisu Khan - "L'Algoza Du Sind" 1979, Pakistan. Arion 33483.

Khamisu Khan plays a mutli-flute Algoza (Alghoza) from the Sindh region of modern day Pakistan.  Blowing into mulitple pipes at once allows for the player to create a drone with one and the melody with another.

I've included images of the illustrated booklet containing complete translations, biography, political notes, and a list of publication, books, and other resources.

Amigos this is my first vinyl rip and I'm pretty damn proud of myself.  I just want to say, if you haven't done this yourself, please consider giving a muchas gracias whoever you pull musica from here on the webs...this stuff is time consuming to say the least.  Much respect to those of you who offer up quality ish on such a frequent basis, you know who you are.  Please give me any feedback on the rip.

Back to the music, this is the first time I've come across the Paredon Records catalog.  Needless to say, I'm definitely on the hunt for more from these guys.  "Songs, music, poetry, speeches, documents of class struggle, natioanl liberation, women's emancipation and democratic rights" - Paredon.

Night Ragas (Music Today, 1994)

योऽसौ ध्वनिविशेषस्तु स्वरवर्णविभूषितः ।

रञ्जको जनचित्तानां स च राग उदाहृतः ।।

"That which is a special dhwani (tune), is bedecked with swara (notes) and varna and is colorful and delightful to the minds of the people, is said to be rāga" - Matanga in the Brihaddeshi.

Long before my first trip to the subcontinent, I acquired a couple of these beautiful volumes of Inidan ragas on cassette--from the free pile at the dump.  Probably my first introduction to music outside of the western sphere o' influence; I was transfixed with what sounded so alien to these young ears who only a few years prior had just discovered dad's floyd and zep records.  Almost a decade and a half later these tapes are among some of my most cherished items from childhood.

There are ragas for many occasions...time of day, time of year, the mood of the weather...think monsoons...  The Music Today label first released these as a multi-volume set including "Morning Ragas", "Afternoon Ragas", "Evening Ragas", and here we have "Night Ragas".

Save this set for after the glorious sun, once again, has passed us for an evening.
