Live on St. Patrick’s Day

Could there be a more appropriate band for St. Patrick’s Day than Boston’s Dropkick Murphy’s? If you’re from Massachusetts probably not.

So everyone’s Irish today, so pour yourself a Guinness and sit back and enjoy.

It’s All Rock & Roll to Me – Part 2

rock n roll

I mentioned yesterday that I have days at work when I barely do more than turn on my computer, but then there are those days when I’m in front of it for 8 to 10 hours. BMFBV1D1 & BMFBV1D2 are my soundtracks for days like that.

There is a little of something here for just about every musical taste so Enjoy!

It’s All Rock & Roll to Me

rock n roll

It’s hard to believe that half the year is gone and this is my first post of the year. I’ve never been one to make New Years resolutions but I did promise myself that I’d post more in 2016 then I did in 2015. But to borrow a baseball metaphor LIFE threw nothing but junk at me the last 6 months.

Now I’m back and hopefully I can develop some momentum going forward for the balance of this year.

There are days at work when I do little more then turn on my computer in  the morning but there are days when I sit for 8, 9 or 10 hours in front of the stupid thing. For those days this mixed CD, BMFBV1D1, and its companion, BMFBV1D2 provide my background music. Most of the music on these discs is from my private collection, but, not all of it, because I’m also a downloader too.

Hopefully there’s something here that piques your interest, so take a chance and download it and then sit back and enjoy, if for no other reason then it’s

Summertime and the livin’ is easy

Bela Lugosi is Dead

Bela Lugosi is Dead. Judge Crater and Amelia Earhart are still missing and at this late date can be presumed dead. Perhaps this is the year Houdini reappears.

Today is Halloween and tonight I don’t doubt I’ll see my fair share of Dracula’s and Zombies so what better choice than the group Bauhaus to provide the musical accompaniment for the day

Give Me An F

I recently read that this July 24th the first new album in 15 years by the UK’s Flying Saucer Attack, Instrumentals 2015, will be released.

To celebrate, so-to-speak, the occasion I decided to refresh the links to my 2007 post about FSA.

For the uninitiated, led by singer/guitarist David Pearce, FSA is an amalgam of My Bloody Valentine, Spacemen 3 and the Velvet Underground.

1994’s Distance is compilation of early singles and previously unreleased material, while 1995’s Further mixtures both the heavily distorted and rustically acoustic guitar passages.

So you’re asking why Flop. Well… it was on the same CD-R that FSA was on and knowing that the links to my 2008 post were probably dead (they were) I decided why not Flop.

Led by the charismatic frontman Rusty Willoughby Flop had the misfortune to be a power pop band during the Age of Grunge. Described as a mixture of Green Day, Jane’s Addiction with a touch of Verve both 1992’s & The Fall of the Mopsqueezer and 1993’s Whenever You’re Ready deliver the  power-pop goods.

Links to my original posts & downloads are in the images.  But you knew that… right?

As for the title of this post, early Boomers will get the reference.

It Was a Long Winter… It Was a Long Season

I knew that the hockey season eventually had to end but I held out hope that the Stanley Cup Finals would go the full 7 games, but the Blackhawks had other ideas, winning their third Stanley Cup in six years, at home in front of their adoring fans. Congratulations to Coach Q & the Blackhawks.

I’m sure that Manchester Monarch fans also wished that their season might have just lasted a little longer. After 20 years in Manchester the Monarchs finally win their first Calder Cup Championship but next season will defend their title in Ontario, California. I feel sorry for Manchester fans, but, unlike Worchester, they will have hockey next season because the parent L.A. Kings relocated their ECHL team in Ontario, CA to Manchester.

Monterey Pop: California Dreamin’

Ah the sounds of Summer! And with it comes the now ubiquitous Summer Festival. Think I’m kidding? In April Rolling Stone.com published a piece on summer concerts, “Summer 2015’s 50 Must-See Music Festivals.” No matter your musical tastes there’s a Festival that caters to it.

But  once upon a time in the West, when there hadn’t even been one rock festival, suddenly, in a two week period there were two. Naturally they took place in California, in 1967, the epicenter of Youth Culture.

This upcoming week marks the 48th anniversary of The Monterey International Pop Festival (June 16-18, 1967).

Last week marked the 48th anniversary of The KFRC Fantasy Fair and Magic Mountain Music Festival (June 10-11, 1967) which is considered to have been America’s – if not the world’s – first rock festival.

The Magic Mountain Music Festival was primarily a regional music affair because the majority of the artists who performed

were groups that played the Fillmore and Avalon ballrooms and were part of the psychedelic rock scene at the time,

A  list of regional acts included The Sparrow, Every Mother’s Son, Kaleidoscope, The Mojo Men, Sons of Champlin, The Loading Zone and The Mystery Trend.

Performers with, a bit, more name recognition (at the time) included Dionne Warwick, Jefferson Airplane, The Byrds with Hugh Masekela, The Seeds, The Grass Roots and The 5th Dimension.

Interestingly The Magic Mountain Music Festival was The Doors first large show and just happened to coincide with the rise of group’s first major hit, “Light My Fire” to the top of the charts.

 Monterey, on the other hand,

was … the first high-profile event to mix acts from major regional music centers in the U.S.A. — San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago, Memphis and New York City

and

boasted a lineup that put established stars like The Mamas and the Papas, Simon & Garfunkel and The Byrds alongside groundbreaking new acts from the UK and the USA.

At Monterey was American audiences first introduction to The Jimi Hendrix Experience, The Who and Ravi Shankar, while also introducing Otis Redding “to a large, predominantly white audience.”

Playing Monterey helped to launch the careers of Janis Joplin (Big Brother and the Holding Company), Canned Heat, Laura Nyro and Steve Miller.

In 2015 we remember Monterey, rather than Magic Mountain simply

because Monterey was widely promoted and heavily attended, featured historic performances, and was the subject of a popular theatrical documentary film…

Monterey served as both inspiration and template for future music festivals, including the Woodstock Festival two years later.

Combined both festivals were spark that helped to jumpstart 1967’s “Summer of Love.”

If you were a teenager or young adult in 1967 the “Summer of Love” were heady times, but at the time, who could have ever imagined that 1968, would be so dark.

Enjoy the music, remain in the light.
