The Joe Rene Complex / MUSIC TO READ THE PRETENDERS BY

CONDITION: Sleeve Ex, some signs of wear, Record Ex, sticker removal mark on Side B label.
DESCRIPTION: This album is quite superb. It's the soundtrack to a book called the Pretenders, and it's a rude book at that. The record is a bit sleazy, quite camp, very groovy, has sexy vocalise, great strings, and as well as a pair of fuzzy hip numbers it also contains the killer talky vocal thing called Harry's Funeral, with a load of girls going on and on about the sordid character "Harry", who was a 'fat sick slob' who also shoots his 'wad of honey on the girls, lots of girls'. Very little is known about this LP, or Joe Rene for that matter, but he's dead groovy. A superb album.
PRICE: £40

QUINCY JONES - THEY CALL ME MISTER TIBBS

CONDITION: NM / M
DESCRIPTION: This is a British pressing of his album, and the British pressing is stupidly rare. Like really stupidly rare. I have seen just two copies of the British pressing in 20 years, and have bought them both. This is mint - looks unplayed. An incredible record, even more so in this condition. If you don't own this soundtrack, you should.
PRICE: £60

THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY / MORRICONE

CONDITION: EX / VG
DESCRIPTION: Rare British original pressing of breakthrough Morricone score. Laminated flipback etc. Essential. Also includes child's interpretation of title scrawled on inner sleeve. Email me about a mint copy if you are interested. Also, email me if you want a list of other LPS I have for sale.
PRICE: £10

THE SICILIAN CLAN / MORRICONE

CONDITION: NM / NM
DESCRIPTION: Killer Mafioso score by the maestro, and this is the rarely seen superb UK original pressing on Stateside, with flip back laminated sleeve etc. Dating from 1970 this is superior to other pressings. A magical album in many ways, a classic with an unforgettable theme, drifting strings, superb melancholia, stunning whistling, weird boings, it's awesome, just awesome.
PRICE: £30

MIXED INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC

CONDITION: M / M (except for slight wave in vinyl edge)
DESCRIPTION: Another one of those "is it classical, is it avant garde or is it library LPs"? Well it's sort of all three. Very unusual, extremely rare, on the small Apollo Sound label. Music by Michael Deadman, and it's superb sample material - curious piano, curling woodwind and all sorts of groovy madness going off and on. Very listenable to. The edge wave effects maybe the first 30 seconds, but very minimal. In fact every copy I have had of this has had the same fault. Quite bizarre abstract DIY cover art too.
PRICE: £25

MODERN KEYBOARD MUSIC

CONDITION: M / M
DESCRIPTION: A sort of companion to the LP above and again on Apollo Sound. Is it classical? Experimental? Library? Yes certainly to the first two, possibly all three. This one is bonkers, Suite for Harpsichord solo is raving mad and takes up a whole side and a bit. This is followed by piano solo work, very enjoyable in an up and downy way.
PRICE: £10

HELEN MERRILL

CONDITION: NM / NM
DESCRIPTION: Rare Japanese pressings of one of the truly great jazz vocal LPs of all time. A 1954 Emarcy original would set you back about #1000. This is magical, late night bluesy, blissful vocalising, with perfect arrangements by a very young Quincy Jones. Includes one of the great versions of Yesterdays - where really her voice is so like an instrument it really can confuse and take you away. I really really love this record. Comes with original Japanese insert.
PRICE: £40

THE ITALIAN JOB SOLD

CONDITION: VG / EX

FRANCIS LAI - RIDER ON THE RAIN SOLD

CONDITION: EX+ / NM
DESCRIPTION: Rare Francis Lai recording, soundtrack to a sex mania on the loose thriller thing. Very underrated, but quite super; has waltzes, odd percussion, sitar, a fine French song, sublime melody, quite beautiful and sophisticated throughout. Even has a groovy weirdy track. One of those odd soundtracks that really is not seen around at all any more. Rare British pressing in best condition I have seen. Please note the sleeve is made of this very light, thin textured card, which ages quickly, in other words this album is nigh on impossible to find without slight ringwear.
PRICE: £25

MIKIS THODORAKIS: SERPICO SOLD

CONDITION: EX- / EX
DESCRIPTION: One of the first soundtracks I ever bought. In a junk shop in Grosvenor Road, Aldershot. Very beautiful, has the killer chase tune 'In The Streets', but is also worth buying for the superb and gentle sounds that haunt the rest of the LP. Really, this is very good, and strangely underrated. This is a rare British pressing.
PRICE: £20

VARIOUS: FRITZ THE CAT OST SOLD

CONDITION: EX / EX
DESCRIPTION: Classic in more ways than one - includes the awesome 'The Riot' and Tjader's Mamblues. Gatefold 80s repress. Cheap.

THE DREAM WORLD OF DION MCGREGOR SOLD

CONDITION: M / M
DESCRIPTION: One of the oddest LPs ever made - Dion talks in his sleep about things like women with one steel eye, mustard battles, Horribletown and lots of other odd madness, and this is a recording of it. Ten dreams in all. Issued by Decca mid 1960s, very hard to find indeed. A classic 'incredibly strange' LP. Very hard to find these days. I have an even rarer signed copy too (sent to a bloke in the UK, and mentions the possibility of recording an English dream) if you are interested. As I say rare LP, by this cult figure.
PRICE: £100

STAN BUTCHER - SWING LIKE A B****** (BASTARD) SOLD

CONDITION: EX / VG+
DESCRIPTION: Extremely hard to find and most desirable jazz ba-ba-da jazz LP, starring the legendary Barbara Moore stretching out on scat vocals. This really is a legendary British recording. This is only the second one I have found in about ten years. Very scarse indeed and a thoroughly groovy and awesome listen, and includes the incredible 'Time Out Of Mind" doop dooby scatty waltz. Too many many high points here to list. Some surface marks (on side one) but plays very well indeed with the occasional very light pop. Very small split along bottom seam at the opening. A good and inexpensive copy. Expect to pay #100 for a mint one.
PRICE: £30

MUSIC TO SUFFER BY - LEONI ANDERSON SOLD

CONDITION: VG / VG
DESCRIPTION: Killer, and I mean killer bad singing of the highest most hysterical order. I adore this album totally. This really is so incredibly good, with a dark humour running through not only the singer, her voice but also the band. Hard to find in good condition, this is very payable, and the vinyl crackles suit the period sounds. Truly brilliantly terrible, especially Indian Love Call, Limberger Lover (a song about cheese) and my all time fave to song of all time, Rats In My Room.
PRICE: £15

BIG BAD MOUSE - FENELLA FIELDING. SOLD

CONDITION: M / M (company sleeve)
DESCRIPTION: Extremely rare stock copy of this superb 7" by the sexy bewigged bouffant legend Fenella. If you know who she is you really need this single. A trunk favourite.
PRICE: £15

MODERATE BEAT MOVEMENTS - S. CROMBIE. SOLD

CONDITION: EX+/ M
DESCRIPTION: Conroy BMLP 104A/B. From 1973. Great, very consistently funky, jazzy and groovy library LP, all music by Stuart Crombie. 11 great tracks in all, bossas, hypnotic funky bass patterns, superb jazzy piano, vibes, sexy flute work, hip guitar sounds, a bit of fuzz, perfect for the summer, and works brilliantly as an album in its own right. One of the top, top Conroys if you ask me. Rare now.
PRICE: £50

LIGHT AND BRIGHT - MARK DUVAL AND HIS MUSIC. SOLD

CONDITION: EX+ / NM
DESCRIPTION: Don't see many of these late LPC Chappells very often, this one I really like not just because of the lovely girl on the front, but because of the track Bottoms Up - a very groovy Roger Webb number with a hooky treated synth thing going off over the top of a cool, funky bass pattern. I love it. Rest of the album includes a touch of abstract hillbilly funk (Barbecue Chicken), light bits and classic mellow birds style Babs Moore sba-ba-da number. Has sold on ebay before for just under #100, but that's just mad.
PRICE: £50

DON'T LOSE YOUR COOL - BASIL KIRCHIN / NATHAN / COLEMAN. SOLD

CONDITION: EX+ / VG+
DESCRIPTION: Mentally rare Kirchin ten inch from De Wolfe in 1967, only issued once. Includes a rare scat vocal number, hypnotic psycho oddness and more - including blissful harpsichord. Impossible to find. Has a sweet, small "Australian Broadcasting Company" gold stamp on the front, and two good distribution stickers on the back which I think add to the history and over all look of the record. Possibly includes Tubbs on Trumpet, but Basil couldn't remember. This is British library history.
PRICE: £60

RAINDROPS KEEP FALING ON MY HEAD - MEL TORME. SOLD

CONDITION: EX+ / NM
DESCRIPTION: Amazing and quite obscure UK pressing of this superb Torme album. It has everything you want from a Mel album, including the very funky "Take a Letter Maria" and "Sunshine Superman", plus one of the saddest, most beautiful versions of She's Leaving Home, in waltz time. A brilliant album, and hard to find, and how can you resist, just look at the seductive superstar way Mel is gazing out at you. Magic.
PRICE: £15

BABYLON OST - VARIOUS. SOLD

CONDITION: NM/ M (sleeve has TV sticker on reverse)
DESCRIPTION: Great soundtrack to the legendary Franco Rosso film about a Brixton soundsystem. Top tunes all the way, includes the killer dub monster Warrior Charge by Aswad. Surprisingly tricky to find on vinyl.

PRICE: £25

MIKE SAMMES - LOVE IS A HAPPY THING. SOLD

CONDITION: NM / NM
DESCRIPTION: The top Sammes LP, immaculate condition this one too. Orchestrated by the great Johnny Scott, this LP comes with the superb funky version of Summertime, and one of my personal all time favourites, I Must Know, that Neil Hefti tune from Sex And The Single Girl. Very hard to find now this LP, believe me.
PRICE: £40

SHELLY MANNE AND HIS MEN - CHECKMATE CONDITION. SOLD

CONDITION: EX / EX
DESCRIPTION: This is one of the great TV / jazz Lps of all time. Checkmate (Starring Doug McClure) was Johnny William's first score, and mighty fine it was too. So fine that Shelly Manne performed his own jazz version of it. Killer modals, a very hip West Coast LP indeed, Hours of endless listening. WellI don't know about you, but I listen to this album bloody loads. The epitome of cool. And from 1961. Rare Australian pressing.
PRICE: £15

DUDLEY MORE TRIO. SOLD

CONDITION: See below
DESCRIPTION: Rare Australian wideband stereo pressing of legendary Dud LP. This is the top of the pile, and surely one of the greatest UK pop jazz LPs of all time. And in the harder to find stereo edition too. Includes the classic Amalgam, but I think this is a consistently fine album, faultless in fact. Sleeve has spinewear and foxing on reverse, vinyl is mint except for pressing fault on the opening track. Shame really, should be #50 otherwise. So grab a bargain.
PRICE: £15

ANDRZEJ KURYLEWICZ - CONTEMPORARY MUSIC FORMATIONS. SOLD

CONDITION: M / M
DESCRIPTION: Is it jazz? Is it library? Is it avant garde? Well yes to all of those. There are moments of Morricone / Edda here, certainly at the beginning, but the whole is a most extraordinary mixture of avant garde, classical, jazz and library. Issued only once on the rare Apollo Sound label, this rarely turns up. And I mean rarely turns up. It's even rarer when it's unplayed, like this one. Vocals by Wanda Warska by the way. Oh, and incidentally, this is one of the awesome LP sleeves featured in the Music Library Book.
PRICE: £25

SHEB WOOLEY - THE PURPLE PEOPLE EATER SOLD

CONDITION: Plain white sleeve, record EX.
DESCRIPTION: Killer nonsense sci-fi oddness from 1957. As used in a few films now, especially that one called Parents where Randy Quaid plays a cannibalistic dad. Great movie. Great track. Original and rare UK MGM pressing.
PRICE: £8
