Abstract Truth - Silver Trees (1970)

Abstract Truth - Silver Trees (1970)

Excellent early '70s melodic wistful freak rock blends with laid back, almost trance-like sounds featuring assorted instruments like flutes, harpsichord, electric guitars, saxophone, keyboards, percussion etc. A refreshing approach with psychedelic touches. Silver Trees was South African band Abstract Truth's second LP. It is much stronger than their debut, Totum, released earlier the same year (1970). Totum consisted of cover songs approached in the psychedelic folk vein; Silver Trees features solely original compositions and rocks out a lot more.

Tracklist:

1. Pollution
2. All The Same
3. Original Man
4. Silver Trees
5. In A Space
6. Moving Away
7. Two
8. Blue Wednesday Speaks

Moonstone - Moonstone (1973)

Moonstone - Moonstone (1973)

This band was from Alaska, and recorded this on a Canadian label back in 1973. The songs really are exquisite, with excellent acoustic guitar, good electric guitar leads in places, piano, percussion, some flute, and very nice male/female vocal harmonies. Privately released on the obscure Kotai label (KOT3003), the album features predominantly female vocals and crystal clear male-female harmony singing. Imagine the meeting of U.S. West Coast acoustic songwriting and esoteric U.K. folk from the early 70s. This is it! Intimate, compelling...magical! Musical accompaniment minimum. Only acoustic guitar features throughout, with piano and flute occasionally. There's the hint of a gentle electric guitar in there too, but its those intricate, ethereal vocal harmonies that draw the listener. Those who enjoy late night/early morning listening, Linda Perhacs, CSNY, Trader Horne, and 70s folk music in general.

Various Artists - With the Sun in My Eyes: 20 Psychedelic Spins From The UK & Europe (2007)

With The Sun In My Eyes is a collection of rare psychedelic spins from the UK and Europe. With so many similarly-themed comps around, it's genuinely difficult to come up with 20 killer tracks previously uncomped on CD. However, the Psychic Circle label happily reassures any worried aficionado that the well has not run dry. It may take a little longer for the pebble to hit the water, but when it does, there are still bucketfuls of lysergically-treated fluid to draw up. Here, you'll find Elton John's rhythm section, Hungary's top psych band, an army PE instructor who thought he was the reincarnation of an Egyptian pharaoh, a Swedish Red Indian expert whose brother sold his records door to door, and the man who asked "Where Do You Go To My Lovely?" getting decidedly strange, plus a whole bunch of other psyched-out artistes. Just say yes. Compiled by legendary psych musician and Psychic Circle label-head, Nick Saloman (The Bevis Frond). Artists include: Plastic Penny, Peter Sarstedt, The Mindbenders, Ola & The Janglers, Omega Group, Zion De Gallier, The Gnomes Of Zurich, The Rattles, Foggy, Majority One, Schadel, Sound Network, Youngblood, Ramases, Grand Union, Winston G, Peter & The Wolves, Don Curtis, Giorgio and The Mooche.

Hieronymus Bosch Garden Of Earthly Delights Detail Postcard

A detail from the middle panel of "The Garden Of Earthly Delights". Whereas some believe that the middle panel, which depicts a fantastical world of nudes in sexual engagement, large fruits, and other suggestive elements, is simply an illustration of paradise lost, others believe that it is a moral warning, which will lead you to hell, as it is depicted in the third panel of the series.

Hieronymus Bosch - The Garden Of Earthly Delights Poster

This is a high resolution art print/poster of The Garden Of Earthly Delights. An incredible masterpiece. The  triptych was painted by the Early Netherlandish master Hieronymus Bosch. It has been housed in the Museo del Prado in Madrid since 1939. Dating from between 1490 and 1510, when Bosch was about 40 or 50 years old, it is his most famous and unconventional work. The three scenes of the inner triptych are probably intended to be read chronologically from left to right. The left panel depicts God presenting Eve to Adam, the central panel shows a luscious garden with a broad panorama of figures, fantastical animals, oversized fruit and hybrid stone formations. The right panel is a hellscape and portrays the torments of damnation. This painting was probably made for the private enjoyment of a noble family.

Galwad Y Mynydd - Galwad Y Mynydd (2007)

Galwad Y Mynydd - Galwad Y Mynydd (2007)

2007 release, the third installment in Finders Keepers' critically acclaimed Welsh Rare Beat series, combines the two ultra rare Galwad Y Mynydd EPs from the early '70s on one CD for the first time ever! Galwad Y Mynydd defined a Dyfed-centric harmonic gentle vocal sound. Galwad Y Mynydd (The Call of The Mountain) ticked all the right boxes in their quest to deliver in their own words 'a new style of contemporary Welsh folk music'. They were, however, never to achieve their ambition of becoming a fully formed professional outfit, rather they were the opening act of a scene of bands that eventually morphed into smooth folk rock college super group; Hergest.

Tracklist:

1. Cân Cadwaladr
2. Un Cynnig Olaf
3. Niwl y Môr
4. Galwald y Mynydd [Instrumental]
5. Merch yn Eistedd Ar y Bryn
6. Byth yn Mynd yn Ôl

V.A. - Prae-Kraut Pandaemonium Vol. 1 (1994)

Prae-Kraut is a term that was coined to describe the mid-60's music of Germany and other European countries like Austria and parts of Switzerland with natives talking in teutonic tongue, seperating from the upcoming Kraut Rock stamp that dominated by the turn of the century. Cultural roots rather than national borders define the subject of interest and even foreign bands, who spent most or all of their career here, get incorpora-ted now and then. UK-bands like The Shamrocks, The Governors or The Rackets were literally unknown back home, but integral parts of the German scene. And the US-Monks still say: "We are a German band!" to this very day.
The pandaemonium part of the monicker wasn't chosen without thought as well. A new generation tried to shake off the evil demons of the past and wanted to build a new society by doing everything exactly the other way around, while the new establishment usually was the bosses in disguise, who feared the spirit of freedom like the devil hates holy water. Demons, ghosts and zombies everywhere...

While the old still couldn't get over the trauma of having lost World War 2, many of the young despised their parents for not having prevented fascism and the resulting atrocities. This may explain why many of the songs are about quite unlikely and ambitious things like philosophy, medicine, warfare or homosexuality, written in a foreign language, while most of the english speaking garage bands still sang about lost love and juvenile lust.

Of course the Germans couldn't express what was on their mind in proper English, but their failures were glo-rious and the immaculate intentions of the early days still sound better than anything that followed. And that's what the Prae-Kraut Pandaemonium is all about. An archaeo-logical project and a tribute to the decade, when living in Germany still was exciting and adventurous. It isn't dedi-cated to the few well known names like The Lords, The Rattles or The Rainbows, but to the many total unknowns, who scratched together their last coins to get their record released on a tiny label, when the majors wouldn't touch them with a barge pole. (prae-kraut.de)

Note: Mercy is a US-band. 101 Strings are a US-studio group. Meta & The Bowling Boys are a German band, but the song was recorded in the 80's.

Jade - Fly On Strangewings (1970)

Jade - Fly On Strangewings (1970)

This little known UK Folk Rock classic was released in the early '70s. Issued in England under the band name "Jade", it's a fantastic album featuring the Sandy Denny-like vocals of Marian Segal. Orchestrated, melodic songs, powerful folk rock with electric guitar harpsichord, and soaring vocal harmonies, this has to be up in the top ten UK folk rock albums of the period. Jade were a British electric folk trio led by Marian Seagal. The style is similar to Sandy Denny's non-traditional stuff like "Who Knows Where the Time Goes?"
Guesting on the album are some famous session players including Pete Sears (later Jefferson Starship), Micky Waller (Jeff Beck Group / Rod Stewart) and John Wetton (Crimson). If you like this be sure to check out her album made 35 years later in collaboration with Circulus.
