There's also a huge japonese-peruano poblacion en Peru (y pequeno mas chino-peruano poblacion)

Melinda!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/10/18 8:05pm melinda:

I knew there was a Japanese-Peruvian population but I don't remember why they emigrated there.
Avatar Wed. 1/10/18 8:07pm glenn:

because the mennonites had already taken over mexico.
Avatar Wed. 1/10/18 8:08pm northguineahills:

@melinda it started before WWII b/c of overpopulation was higher then even their stellar economy could handle, but after the war in most Japanese emigres went to Peru or Brazil (the US didn't look as inviting, for obvious reasons, except Hawai'i).
Avatar Wed. 1/10/18 8:09pm northguineahills:

@glenn: You're not that wrong, that and Mormons in the north (see Ted Cruz).
Avatar Wed. 1/10/18 8:09pm northguineahills:

Ok, leaving work, thanks Gary!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/10/18 8:10pm Gary:

Have a great night, NGH!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/10/18 8:10pm melinda:

Are there a lot of mennonites in Mexico? Immigration/emigration patterns are so interesting.
Avatar Wed. 1/10/18 8:10pm northguineahills:

In Peru, it was mostly Japanese fishermen (similar ecosystem) before the war. That was the root emigre population.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/10/18 8:11pm melinda:

ngh that makes sense.
Avatar Wed. 1/10/18 8:16pm glenn:

yep. they were recruited from canada to basically teach mexicans how to farm profitably. because hey, if you can farm in manitoba, with a six week growing season, you can farm anywhere.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/10/18 8:22pm Little Danny:

@melinda: We're 60 minutes from the border here in west Texas, and they're a pretty common sight here in the local convenience stores. Cool to overhear very germanic-looking white people speaking Spanish. Also hi!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/10/18 8:23pm Little Danny:

This St. Thomas Pepper Smelter is great!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/10/18 8:25pm melinda:

LD that's wild! Many Mennonites where I lived in Iowa but you sort of expect that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/10/18 8:25pm melinda:

This variety of Yma Sumac is new to me and really cool.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/10/18 8:26pm melinda:

wowowoh
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/10/18 8:26pm Little Danny:

@melinda: Same here, I grew up one county over from Lancaster county, PA
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/10/18 8:27pm Gary:

It's her lesser-known rock period!
Avatar Wed. 1/10/18 8:34pm still b/p:

There's a reflexive expectation, when seeing the mode of dress, that Mennonites will be located close to Amish on the culture and technology maps....but then you see Mennonites zipping up to the shore in a little outboard, and see the modern full-size bus coach that brought them for their outing at the lake (Sebago, Melinda). Heard this discussed a number of times, but don't know the particular rules & practices.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/10/18 8:36pm Gary:

BP!
Avatar Wed. 1/10/18 8:37pm still b/p:

Hola! Supper is better with these songs!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/10/18 8:40pm Little Danny:

Now THIS is heavy
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/10/18 8:40pm melinda:

@b/p yeah, there is a Mennonite farmer couple that comes to the farmers' market, too, with a truck. And of course many Mennonites don't wear the old-timey threads at all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/10/18 8:41pm Gary:

I *think* this might be the first postpunk band the country produced
Avatar Wed. 1/10/18 8:42pm still b/p:

At Deering Oaks? Don't think I've seen them.
Avatar Wed. 1/10/18 8:43pm glenn:

mennomex, your one stop shop for bonnets, really bad gospel music, hot sauce and tortilla presses. www.mennomex.com
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/10/18 8:44pm melinda:

No, the Wednesday market on Monument Square. I've never been to the Deering Oaks market, doesn't work with my schedule as well, though it must be a nice spot.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/10/18 8:48pm melinda:

@glenn I checked out their facebook page, interesting!
Avatar Wed. 1/10/18 8:48pm still b/p:

Now the winter market is out in the Maine Girls' Academy, formerly Catherine Macauley. Don't know how that's working out for all the peninsula people.

I heard a Quechua potato song about 25 years ago or more that stuck in my head a long time. Did I miss anything like that in the first 90 minutes night?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/10/18 8:53pm Little Danny:

This Arturo Ruiz del Pozo is another revelation. Great!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/10/18 8:54pm Gary:

Aww, thank you, Geezerette!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/10/18 8:59pm Ike:

I was in Peru for the first time recently and I sure didn't hear anything this cool! But then I was too busy eating amazing seafood, being allergic to everything, and seeing the sights, etc. etc.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/10/18 9:06pm Gary:

Ike! Yeah, I think I remember seeing a photo or two from you
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/10/18 9:06pm Uncle Michael:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/10/18 9:07pm Uncle Michael:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/10/18 9:08pm melinda:

Mine cut out
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/10/18 9:09pm Gary:

Michael! Well, I just made a horrible switch from one cut to another -- it might just have been that
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/10/18 9:10pm Gary:

Oh, shoot -- hmm
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/10/18 9:10pm Gary:

It's working on my phone
Avatar Wed. 1/10/18 9:11pm still b/p:

I had a gasp-gasp and full stop here. Thought it was the player.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/10/18 9:11pm Uncle Michael:

I had silence for like 30 seconds. My player even stopped, ass it was getting no stream. I don't think it was you.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/10/18 9:12pm Gary:

Ah ... okay, lemme know if it cuts out again (knocks wood)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 1/10/18 9:15pm Uncle Michael:
