Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 12/13/17 7:09pm Gary:

So, gang, tell me what were your favorite reissues or historical comps this year?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 12/13/17 7:10pm Gary:

OMG, Hyde! I was thinking about going up there in two weeks
Avatar Wed. 12/13/17 7:11pm hyde:

i love the Midori Takada/Through The Looking Glass rerelease
  Wed. 12/13/17 7:13pm Dean:

The Brain Box is a favorite. I bought a bunch of boxes this year, but most were originally reissued in past years.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 12/13/17 7:13pm Gary:

I need to hear that one, Hyde ... and, wait, whoa, Brain Box came out this year? I totally forgot about it
Avatar Wed. 12/13/17 7:14pm tim abdellah:

The Beach Boys "1967 – Sunshine Tomorrow" is pretty great. The new first-ever stereo mix of the "Wild Honey" album is phenomenal!
Avatar Wed. 12/13/17 7:14pm hyde:

@Gary huh, do you have any intel? i am mostly going to eat at Heng Lay and Peepkuptmei. And a couple other non Cambodian stops. If there's any place you want me to scope out, lemme know.
Avatar Wed. 12/13/17 7:16pm hyde:

@Gary oh and also:if you really go there in 2 weeks my new job doesn't start until Jan 2. i got wheels.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 12/13/17 7:18pm Gary:

Awesome! Yeah, maybe we should -- I'm not entirely sure exactly the neighborhoods we'll want to hit, but let's get in touch ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 12/13/17 7:19pm Gary:

Meanwhile, it appears I've got a technical issue I need to work out
Avatar Wed. 12/13/17 7:24pm hyde:

@Gary just drop me a line a couple days ahead if you're really doing Lowell!

@Tim hmm, i think i need that Wild Honey in stereo
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 12/13/17 7:26pm Gary:

Yeah, I wanna hear Wild Honey, as well!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 12/13/17 7:27pm Gary:

The technical issue, btw, is NOT the way this track sounds -- it's a deconstruction of Tom Jobim
  Wed. 12/13/17 7:42pm Dean:

Another nice compilation with some reissued material is Fairport Convention's Come All Ye.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 12/13/17 7:43pm Gary:

Would love to hear that one, Dean
Avatar Wed. 12/13/17 7:44pm hyde:

@Dean wow, thanks. i love Fairport but didn't even know about this.
  Wed. 12/13/17 7:44pm Dean:

It gets a lot of play at WFMU, and deservedly so.
Avatar Wed. 12/13/17 7:54pm tim abdellah:

I don't know if the Mahmoud Guinia release that Marc Teare did on Hive Mind Records qualifies as a "reissue". It's really good, at any rate.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 12/13/17 7:55pm Gary:

I'll be playing it, Tim!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 12/13/17 7:55pm Gary:

There's a new 3-disc Isaac Hayes compilation out called "The Spirit of Memphis (1962-1976)". Encompasses not only his solo work, but also his earlier composition and production work at Stax. Haven't heard the whole thing yet, but any comp that has both "Soul Man" and "Shaft" on it can't be bad!
  Wed. 12/13/17 8:12pm Dean:

I'm gunnin' for that Isaac Hayes set, @tim.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 12/13/17 8:14pm Gary:

And speaking of boxes, The Fall singles collection, though I gather it doesn't include them all (based on some rather miffed Amazon reviews)
  Wed. 12/13/17 8:17pm Dean:

German prog band Novalis released a 15CD set this year. I don't have the budget or stamina to go for it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 12/13/17 8:18pm Gary:

Whaaaaa ... ? That's krazy tawk
  Wed. 12/13/17 8:19pm Dean:

But I'd love to get the 41CD Decca box of Handel's "Great Oratorios."

Oh here's another one from 2017 - the second album by Chicago was given a remix treatment by Stephen Wilson, and sounds waaaaaay better than the original version. Yeah, I still have a soft spot in my heart for Chicago :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 12/13/17 8:40pm Gary:

Chicago was important at certain dances in grade and high school
  Wed. 12/13/17 8:41pm Dean:

Yeah, me, too. Saw a good story yesterday or the day before about Terry Kath, whose daughter produced a documentary about him. Those first couple, three albums, even including the monumental 4LP live set, were generally solid.

Box sets I'd like to see, in addition to whatever emerges from Dust-to-Digital: the first handful of Jethro Tull albums; a complete Ma Rainey (there's a series on Document); a complete Bessie Smith (might already be one?); and anything by Nikhil Banerjee not already on Raga Records.

Totally new discovery for me!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 12/13/17 8:57pm Uncle Michael:

Dean, I have the whole Tull catalog in digital form. This is probably because I adored them when I was 12. There is no artist I'm quicker to hit the skip button for..
  Wed. 12/13/17 8:58pm Dean:

Heh, I didn't learn to enjoy Tull until I was 58. Still am.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 12/13/17 8:59pm Uncle Michael:

But yeah, I can still hang with the first three albums.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 12/13/17 9:04pm joe:

I have jsut recently rediscoverd some joy in non Syd Barrett (which I never stopped listening to) Pink Floyd. Still have a hard time with Dark Side but I listend to The Wall all the way through for the first time in over 20 years on an overnight drive and was like oh yeah I really loved this album at one time
Avatar Wed. 12/13/17 9:05pm still b/p:

From the haters:
"Enough people were taken in by (lead singer Ian Anderson`s) awkward collage of fifteenth-hand theology, light-metal theatrics, and ill-informed rural nostalgia to make `Aqualung` an enormous hit among pretentious 13-year-olds of all ages."
I was maybe a few weeks past 13 when I bought Aqualung and Thick As A Brick at the same time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 12/13/17 9:07pm Gary:

B/P!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 12/13/17 9:07pm joe:

Pretentious? I don't think I was pretentious at 13 may be a bit self obsessed but I mean have you ever met me? Why wouldn't I be?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 12/13/17 9:11pm Gary:

When I was studying music there was this one kid with super long hair who looooooooved Pink Floyd, and I guess loaned our theory teacher one of the albums, not sure which one. I still remember their convo when the teacher returned it:

Teacher: I think ... I think you need to be on some kind of drugs to get anything out of this.

Student: Well, yeah
Avatar Wed. 12/13/17 9:13pm still b/p:

Meet these guys out behind the gym and work it out/make them eat a few pages:Jimmy Guterman and Owen O`Donnell, "Worst Rock and Roll Records of All Time."
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 12/13/17 9:15pm Gary:

I was probably around 13 when I bought Thick as a Brick -- I loved it because the newspaper reminded me of National Lampoon or Monty Python books, for some reason
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 12/13/17 9:17pm cklequ:

I think I loved that record for the same reason, Gary. I've been a sucker for unique packaging since then.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 12/13/17 9:18pm joe:

I discovered TAAB around 12 or 13 as well in my uncles record collection. I had no idea who the guy Jethro Tull was and it was the fold out newspaper that caught my attention.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 12/13/17 9:18pm Gary:

Me too, definitely
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 12/13/17 9:20pm Uncle Michael:

I'm trying to think of any other band or artist I've done a bigger 180 on. I can't.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 12/13/17 9:20pm joe:

So many albums were swiped from that collectoin based on cover art. I remember having seen In The COurt of The Crimson king in his room when I was like 5 or 6 and that cover stuck with me forever that when I came across it during one of those raids it was definate take.
Avatar Wed. 12/13/17 9:21pm still b/p:

I hoped Mom wouldn't take a look at TAAB pages inside and see the naughty connect-the-dots feature.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 12/13/17 9:21pm Gary:

Okay, it's WHO'S YOUR BIGGEST 180 TIME
Avatar Wed. 12/13/17 9:23pm northguineahills:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 12/13/17 9:24pm Gary:

Hey, NGH!
Avatar Wed. 12/13/17 9:24pm coelacanth∅:

stillb/p @9.05 -people who throw the word "pretentious" around when they're talking about music that's beyond their comprehension (there are a few wfmu djs who fall into this category) are usually pretentious people who give themselves far too much credit for their scant knowledge of music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 12/13/17 9:24pm joe:

That's a tough one bacause over the last few years I have gone back to so many bands that I could listen to any more for so many years.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 12/13/17 9:24pm joe:

sorry couldn't listen to any more for so many years
Avatar Wed. 12/13/17 9:25pm David W:

I'm going to obliterate my reputation here but 180 on... The Carpenters.

@coel: I pretense your pretension of my pretensiousness!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 12/13/17 9:26pm Gary:

David! Noooooooo ...

Or, wait. You mean you hated them but now love them? (I'm guessing not)
Avatar Wed. 12/13/17 9:26pm hyde:

i think my biggest 180 is AC/DC
Avatar Wed. 12/13/17 9:27pm coelacanth∅:

i'll see that and raze your pretention!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 12/13/17 9:27pm Gary:

I haven't 180ed on AC/DC yet, but neither have I heard them in 3 or 4 decades
Avatar Wed. 12/13/17 9:27pm northguineahills:

@David: I was a Johnny Come Lately, but SY's (Showeb Knife, etc) contribution to the Carpenter's tribute made me a true believer. (And Kim 's vouching for Karen).
Avatar Wed. 12/13/17 9:28pm coelacanth∅:

i'm pretty sure i'll never like ac/dc. sorry.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 12/13/17 9:28pm joe:

Rush was a big one. I listened to a lot until about 18 but then could stomach them for like 25 years. Recently I started to enjoy them again but can't get past Signals (1982)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 12/13/17 9:28pm cklequ:

I still like The Carpenters. I always hated AC/DC. I'm with Uncle Michael on the Jethro Tull train.
Avatar Wed. 12/13/17 9:29pm northguineahills:

If you go back long enough, my 180 was techno and house music (at least the artsy stuff), also finding joy in classic rock and pre-90s pop music.

Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 12/13/17 9:29pm joe:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 12/13/17 9:29pm Gary:

I can definitely say which *album* I've had the hardest 180 on, and that would be Pink Floyd's Animals
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 12/13/17 9:29pm Gary:

Either direction!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 12/13/17 9:30pm Uncle Michael:

I've reevaluated or evolved on a lot of artists. Tull is my only true love/hate or hate/love flip.
Avatar Wed. 12/13/17 9:30pm northguineahills:

I had a rough few months, and sat down in Brookln before I departed for FL, and I saw a live video of AC/DC on parade float in Australia, and I suddenly got them, I now dig them. It's weird how those moments happen.
Avatar Wed. 12/13/17 9:31pm coelacanth∅:

i took several years off listening to jethro tull...except aqualung, which i've listened to as an easter tradition in it's entirety, almost every year for many decades. it is a perfect album.
...for 1/2 a year now i've been pretty heavily into the first 3 albums again.
Avatar Wed. 12/13/17 9:32pm northguineahills:

@Gary: That was the first Pink Floyd album I liked (Then I discovered more Syd Barrett). (It might have been the same day discovered Ummagumma).
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 12/13/17 9:32pm Uncle Michael:

I think maybe I did a complete flip on the Doors.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 12/13/17 9:33pm Gary:

REM might be the biggest band flip for me
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 12/13/17 9:33pm joe:

NOt to exhale smoke up Uncle Michaels posterior or play to his being in the room but I have very much adopted his show moniker of No Guilty Pleasures in my listening which has allowed me to go back and re-embrace much music that I thought I was too cool for school for anymore.

pink floyd i always loved, until the wall. that was terrible. it's still terrible; and i was so disappointed because that was my favorite band at the time.
now, that's still my cut off; but i also haven't wanted to hear dark side in a few decades. i still know it's great; i just don't want to hear it.

I guess the closest thing to a full 180 for me from good to bad Yes. I only really listened to them for about a year part of that was probably just because of hte crowd I was hanging out with but I just can't do it. Something about them just sends me over the edge.

I don't think it was so much a 180 flip as a refusal to stick with Aerosmith on their route. Big fan as a teenager (and still have a soft spot for early albums). Couldn't stand the comeback stuff, overdone clowny schlock.

I can't think of any artist's music I listened to after the age of 16 the I no longer liked, but, I do dislike later music from artists I like their earlier work.
Avatar Wed. 12/13/17 9:43pm coelacanth∅:

actually my favorite rem album is life's rich pageant.

ha! i've also been listening to a lot of yes for a few month now. relayer and fragile are both just stellar!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 12/13/17 9:44pm Uncle Michael:

OK, bands that you didn't stop loving, but that jumped the shark, and you couldn't hang with them past that point.

I'll start with the Guess Who, whom I adore up to the Road Food album, then...fuck it.

Up in like 15 minutes, a tribute to HAIR on Testify! wfmu.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 12/13/17 9:44pm Gary:

Speaking of which, Uncle Michael did a pretty terrific one a while back, as well
Avatar Wed. 12/13/17 9:45pm northguineahills:

I'm good w/ everything REM from Green and before, then it becomes song-by-song basis.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 12/13/17 9:45pm joe:

Radiohead, still love Pablo Honey
Metallica really can't do anything after And Justice For All. There is more I just have to think of them
Avatar Wed. 12/13/17 9:45pm tim abdellah:

Love this Mahmoud! It's late enough that I can crank this at the office, which gives me great joy :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 12/13/17 9:46pm Uncle Michael:

Thanks, Gary. Not as awesome as my Jesus Christ Superstar tribute!
Avatar Wed. 12/13/17 9:46pm coelacanth∅:

my flips from like to dislike: todd rundgren; dinosaur jr (i don't hate it. it just bores me to tears); jonathan richman; ...
this of course not counting when an artist is soley responsible for the flip (ie when devo got awful or when pink floyd got awful, etc)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 12/13/17 9:46pm joe:

@northguineahills I have to agree with you on the REM thing with one exception in Monster.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 12/13/17 9:46pm Gary:

Oh, wait, did I mix them up?
Avatar Wed. 12/13/17 9:46pm northguineahills:

Amen joe on your Metallica assessment. I like Radiohead up through about 2005
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 12/13/17 9:46pm melinda:

I'm excited about the Hair show, tho I might have to catch it on archive.
Avatar Wed. 12/13/17 9:47pm coelacanth∅:

(oh, yeah - that's what i mean...as UM put it "jumps the shark"...too many)
Avatar Wed. 12/13/17 9:47pm northguineahills:

@joe, Yes, I like Monster, and I have all of REM's albums through '99, I just don't like every song.
Avatar Wed. 12/13/17 9:48pm northguineahills:

@coel: Dinosaur through Greenmind, then it's song for song basis for me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 12/13/17 9:49pm Gary:

Sorry, I'm clearly (a) high on cold medicine and (b) stupid and (c) can't distinguish 60s "youth culture" musicals

I get a hankerin' to hear "Murmur" once in a while. I like many of the other albums, but don't often feel like putting them on.
Avatar Wed. 12/13/17 9:49pm northguineahills:

Prepared to be edumacated at 10, Gary! Ok, time to clean, I'll be in the background.
Avatar Wed. 12/13/17 9:50pm coelacanth∅:

ngh i think i agree on all points about rem (i'd have to look at their discography) except no, not monster either. i don't hate it though.
Avatar Wed. 12/13/17 9:52pm northguineahills:

Even, "UP" had a few good songs....
Avatar Wed. 12/13/17 9:52pm northguineahills:

Just buy anything off of Souljazz Recs, give in.....!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 12/13/17 9:52pm joe:

One of the other things I have embraced more in the last few years is the not feeling pressured to judge based on a complete album. I'm way more comfortable with the out of those 13 tracks you produced 2 good songs and I'm ok with that as opposed to an all or nothing mindset.
Avatar Wed. 12/13/17 9:53pm tim abdellah:

G'nite all, and thx for sharing your 180s!

Wasn't the Grass Roots one of those situations that kind of became a solo project for someone that wasn't even the initial song writer for the band.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 12/13/17 9:57pm Gary:

OH, well, then I'm with you, David!
Avatar Wed. 12/13/17 9:57pm coelacanth∅:

yeah, rem...first 7 albums. i just looked and out of time has some of my favorite songs on it.

Holy Crap - I never heard that Fadoul track before - it's a cover of frickin' Creedence Clearwater Revival's version of "Good Golly Miss Molly"!!

Gary - I just started listening to your show in the last couple of days and it is blowing my mind. Really incredible music, ecclectic and beautiful. I'm a Brooklyn resident and will never look at Bodegas the same way again. Thank you, sir!
